      There's nothing wrong with hiking alone. Do it all the time in the Cascades. However, there are common sense precautions that always must be taken, including NEVER going on a hike without the Ten Essentials; making sure people are aware of your planned itinerary/location/anticipated return time; and having basic hiking safety knowledge.

      @mspires1138 Před 9 měsíci +8

      It's not about hiking alone, but notifying someone on a set time and day if you don't show up is a good recourse. Now that you don't know what you are doing, then yes, always have someone with you who does know about hiking bushcraft skills that can teach you before you are confident to go on your own.
      I personally think some of this is done purposely, though, to gain popularity in the public media world. You can't deny the possibility of that not being so?

      @@isocarboxazid What is wrong with it is the number of people that get attacked whether by humans or wildlife, plus the number that get injured. Plus the lack of communication in wild areas when something goes wrong. Trails change, get damaged and no matter how good you are at navigating even experts like rangers get lost. Weather changes with little to no warning. It is just foolish.

      I’m baffled. The trail is extremely well travelled and obvious, whether in fog or the dark with a light. From brief images on the video, I’m guessing she reached the end, which is a broad rock ridge and then travelled down from there instead of back on the ridge to the obvious trail. I expect she had no understanding of the terrain and there are areas around there that are very rugged and cliff out. She’s lucky this didn’t happen two months ago or probably no one survives that long without a lucky find of water.

    Did she go by herself?

    When I'm hiking I always use my 200 dollar smartphone's gps and previously downloaded offline map so I won't get lost even in a no cell signal area. I also have a powerbank, a small portable solar panel and hand crank to charge it.

    How does one get lost in a park?

      Heh. To be fair, this "park" is over 1200 square miles of extremely treacherous territory covered in an endless minefield of plants that literally want to kill you... and that's not counting any of the wildlife that would love to have you for dinner, which she is _extremely_ lucky not to have encountered.

      @@the_purple_mage so....maybe being a bit better prepared woulda gone a long way? People lost the ability to think for themselves. It really could've gone sideways for what?
