    Best advice I've heard so far Mark, " Don't get caught up on your cameras, get caught up in making films" there's so much truth behind this because I can't begin to tell you how many filmmakers think that the Best most expensive cameras will make you the best of the best but they are so wrong!!!! Less is more and more is less!!

    Great review - we run almost exactly this set-up, except we use the Sennheiser 8060 (slightly shorter), the Sony URX P30D (as it's dual channel receiver). Also I usually use Sony G Master lenses or cine primes (Angenieux / CZ - depending on the documentary). I swapped out the Sony Fx6 LCD display attachment for the FX6 bracket, but also use a Ninja V. We've shot with it in -25 degrees celcius & +40degrees, it runs fine!

    My normal documentary setup is (two) C300mk2's with LCD's, a Sigma Art 18-35 F1.8, a Canon 70-200 F2.8, Sanken CS-3e shotgun mic, Sennheiser lav and a Sachtler Ace tripod. I've filmed many docs in the remote Northern Alberta wilderness with that setup and it has never failed me. It's really all you need.
    The built in ND and great battery life on the MkII is amazing for documentary work. Even though it's getting old, there are _still_ not many other cameras I'd trust in the wild over it.

    curious why you'd use a front element VND as opposed to the fx6 internal. In my experience with the non mist 2-5 VND with that exact same sigma 24-70, it produced some extreme blueing and vignetting at 24mm and 5 stops of ND. Created a big head ache when editing the first doc piece I shot with the set up. Love the thought and intentionality so I'm sure there is a reason behind this! Cheers, Nic

I see that you got rid of the small screen that comes with the FX6, so does this mean that you control the camera and acces the camera menu via the Cine 7? If so, can you clarify the exact model that you are using and how this actually is connected? The link in the description leads to the SmallHD homepage. If I look up the Cine 7 there it says it only has the ability to control the Sony VENICE, but the FX6 us not listed. I know the Sennheiser wireless is better than a Rode or DJI wireless, but the benefit of those systems is the on-board recording of all the audio, all of the time, even if the camera is not recording. Plus, it's a backup track. I use a Rode Wireless Go II with a Sanken COS 11D lav and it works for me. If the camera isn't recording and you get a golden comment, just cover with b-roll.

    I love your channel Mark! Question on the AVX. A couple of years ago on my FS7 I was using the Sony hotshoe for 2x lapels, plus a top mic, and an AVX just like your setup. I had issues with audio though because the AVX has a slight delay because of the digital processing. That caused me headaches in post because it's was fractionally out of sync and you could hear it when talent were standing closer together and there was some bleed between mics. Like an awful slap delay. Because it wasn't a entire frame out of sync I had to manually micro adjust the AVX audio tracks in premiere. It was an absolute punish. How do you navigate using mics that don't have latency, with the AVX system that does?

    • @ChuckRiseUp
      @ChuckRiseUp Před rokem +1

      The AVX system has 19ms which can be a pain in the ass if you are recording with other mics that doesn't have latency. The way I do it now I use a mixing console like the Sound Device MixPre and you can set a delay of 19ms on any tracks, so your other mics can be in sync with the AVX.

    Do you ever have issues with the AVX loosing connection? I was feeding a mix from my sound bag to our cam op and we were running around NYC. Constantly loosing connection. It was a pain. I'd much rather use timecode sync boxes and a UHF camera hop.

    Hey Mark. I assume you can’t use the fx6 touch focus tracking on your small HD monitor. Are you shooting mostly manual focus for this project? When would you use the autofocus?

      No lots of auto. Just manage flick it to manual when needed

    Love your honesty and passion in your videos. I am hoping to join your AOD next opening. Just trying to shoot some more time documentary style video which I love. I just had one question as a rookie! I love to shoot handheld and most of what I shoot is on the fly. I get some great footage which works in the edit. I also get a load of garbage where I’ve missed focus, exposure is out etc. does this still happen to a pro or do you tend to get great footage majority of the time? Frustrates me but wondered if it comes with more practice or will there always be an element of garbage! Thanks

    Hey Mark, great video! I have a question that may sound stupid, but I also wouldn't consider myself a film maker so it's probably fine 😅 How do you keep your subject in focus with a rig like that? Does the FX6 have good AF capabilities? Or is there some focus pulling going on that I missed? If there is AF involved, how does the lens keep up with that? I use a Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art for photography and it's not exactly the best when it comes to video AF. Thanks for making great content!

    I don’t know if I understood that correctly, but do you power your camera and monitor from the same v mount batterie? I often heard that you shouldn’t do this as there could be electrical surges frying your camera ports. I don’t know if you connect the v mount directly to the cam (not that familiar with the fx6) and the monitor with a cable and if that changes anything. I’m talking about a scenario when each of them is connected via dtap.

    Great content! Did I got it right, you are using SIGMA 24-70 e mount? Or did you opt for a EF version with sigma converter? I am on the verge, deciding between those, for docu work and some gimbal work where I want that AF to work!

    Hey Mark, I'm late to this video. I use to own the Fx9 and I used the Audio Technica AT875R Shotgun mic on my FX9. I was wondering whats your opinion on this mic and does it fit on the fx6? Should I just cough up the extra $200 and buy the MKE 600?

      I use it on the monitor only. My business partner uses it in camera but for me I NEVER want to risk overriding the log and burning in the LUT to the footage
