The Jewish people's claim to a state for the Jewish people is as follows: Their argument is that there is a need for a Jewish state since they are oppressed and persecuted in many countries. And even though there are states in which Jews can live free today (the USA, for instance), the threat of potential persecution in the furure still remains anywhere. Therefore, the argument for the necessity of a Jewish state is very true, and it should also apply for other peoples without an own state in my opinion (like the Curds and the Palestinians). And an ethnic state can only work if this ethnicity stands for the majority population.
The apartheid regime however had another, unjust claim to justify itself: They obviously didn't say that there was a necessity of a white state since white people were persecuted. They said that white people were a superior race compared to others, therfore destined to govern and prohibited from mixing with others.

    • @sparkzbarca

Except multiculturalism is the exception not the norm.
Multiculturalism is a Western concept and done well it works. Though it still needs to be done well, the Nordic countries are downright reeling from letting in middle Eastern refugees without vetting them for their desire to assimilate.
Japan, China, India etc have ZERO desire for immigration and desire a homogenous culture and ethnicity.
Both Japan and China don't even want other Asians coming in and being granted citizenship much less middle easterners or western people's.
Multiculturalism done well allows you to grab the best ideas of others and integrate them into your society.
But done poorly you end up importing toxic stuff.
Sweden has fairly low crime but it's spiked, 60% of Sweden's criminals were immigrants. It's closer to 75% for the crimes of robbery and rape and murder.
That's not to say it can't be made to work but they should have rejected millions of the refugees out of hand for wanting to be Muslim and middle Eastern and many other things but not swedes.
I've American, I have polish heritage and that's great but my Americaness is my core Identity and no one wanting to live in America should want to be anything more than they want to be American. They should aspire to adopt American culture and values so that we can have a shared identity.

It would kind of be like Malaysia, South Africa or Switzerland with lots of diversity, multilingualism and autonomy for different communities.
Just share the land and live side by side. Then everyone will be happy and live in peace. I don’t see why Israelis want to lock Palestinians out? Palestinians are open to sharing a state, but Israelis aren’t.

Palestinians getting independence and Jews/Israelis getting a safe haven in their “holy land”. I think a shared state would have been able to avoid much of the conflicts of today. Palestinian Arabs actually welcomed Jewish refugees throughout the 20th century up until after WW2 - showing they never had any issues. Issues arrived when Palestinian families living on the land for over 1000 years were deported, had their properties stolen and forbidden to return! The fact of the matter is that a two state solution is really the only way at this point to ensure both sides get any part of what they want. It’s an unfortunate reality but it’s true, and it’d be impractical in the extreme to try to make a one-state solution now without one side dominating the other. Whether a one state solution would’ve worked then is irrelevant-one can’t change the past. I see no possible way especially now that the two civilizations in the Holy Land, who more often than not hate each other, can coexist in one nation today.

Arabs do _not_ have the same de facto rights as Jews in Israel. Over half the Arab population of Israel is below the poverty line. Arabs have a disproportionately higher infant mortality rate, as well as disproportionately less access to education. Many forms of discrimination go unchecked by the government Employers, landowners, Police, judiciary authorities and lawmakers are known to favour Jewish nationals over Arab nationals in almost all circumstances.
In fact, the Jewish National Fund owns 13% of the _entire_ landmass of Israel - a huge proportion of the developable land in the country. The majority of land within the green line is off limits to Palestinian Israelis. 80% of the country is off limits for Palestinians.
Quasi-government entities like the JNF have a near-complete monopoly over land ownership. The JNF stipulates that only Jews can buy, mortgage or lease their land. The Israeli Land Administration compensates the JNF with an equal amount of land, otherwise, in order to maintain this unequal access of land.
Regional councils regularly deny Arabs residency in order to preserve the “Jewishness” of their areas. They actively work against the freedom of religious expression for Palestinian Muslims and Christians. The mayor of Upper Nazareth went as far as saying, “I would rather cut off my right arm than build an Arab school.”
The Absentees’ Property Laws restrict Palestinian refugees from the use and disposal of properties they owned prior to displacement. These properties were confiscated and given to the Israeli Custodian of Absentee Property, amounting to 70% of all Israeli land.
These are all Issues that Palestinian citizens of Israel face. Those who were born in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, having no Israeli citizenship, are met with even worse discrimination. This isn't equal rights - it's apartheid.

So you're saying that 7 million people who are Jewish keep 78% of a country that 12 million people who aren't Jewish are entitled to live in? The International Community were some Imperial powers after the war. There are plenty of safe places for people of the Jewish faith. How about this? We have a country divided in three state-like entities: Israel, Palestine, and Jerusalem. Each of these three states' citizens can visit the other two freely, but they can't move there unless given permission by the local government of these states, which are in full control of immigration. The rights of Jews (and everyone else, but Jews specifically, as that is a major concern for Israelis) are protected in the constitution. Jerusalem could have constitutionally mandated restrictions on immigration stipulating that neither the Palestinian population or Israeli population of Jerusalem may fall below 45% of the overall population, though the goal would be to stay as close to a 50-50 split as possible. There could be a similar national policy to keep a certain parity between Israel and Palestine's voting population, or at least its voting population. If it looks like Palestinians are outnumbering the Israelis, we fast-track immigration and access to citizenship in Israel. It would also maintain a similar rule for it's leadership, trying to achieve parity amongst elected officials. The overall country would be a constitutional republic, and there could be a rule that if the President is Jewish then the Prime Minister must be Palestinian, and vice versa.
It wouldn't be perfect, but it would certainly be an improvement on what they have now, wouldn't it?

SO much ignorance. In 1948, the Arabs publicly declared their intention to wipe out every Jew in Israel, including the ones who had been there for centuries, and take all the land for the Palestinian Arabs. They lost. Instead of accepting that the people who start and lose a genocidal war of aggression pay the price for it, they instead demanded that the world simply GIVE them what they failed to take by force. It would be no different than Germany expecting that Poland, France, Belgium, Norway and half of Russia be given to them after losing WW2.

What we need is a 2 state solution, a Jewish state west of the river and an Arab state east of the river. Half of Palestine was made into the Arab state Jordan and then the Jewish state Israel was formed in 1948. That’s it! Jordan is the Arab state in Palestine. There needs to be a deal made for any Arabs west of the river who don’t want to live in a Jewish state to move to Jordan.

In a March 1977 interview with the Dutch newspaper Trouw he stated that "between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese there are no differences. We are all part of one people, the Arab nation [...] Just for political reasons we carefully underwrite our Palestinian identity. Because it is of national interest for the Arabs to advocate the existence of Palestinians to balance Zionism.
