  • In 1864 Civil War photographers Jacob Coonley and George Barnard were in Nashville and managed to get some interesting images of the City of Nashville and surrounding area. On the 15th and 16th of December there is a battle going on when some of these images were taken.

Standing at the capital today and President Polks grave and the houses you see across the road are the Andrew Jackson building and I wish we got a photo straight across because that is the war memorial building

My Great, great grandfather was there with the 33rd Wisconsin Infantry under General Andrew Jackson Smith. They captured Shy's Hill. Wonderful photos.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but the sequence from 1:30 to 2:09 appears to be part of a panorama taken from the roof of a building which used to sit just north of Lindsley Hall. In the 1st pane, over Lindsley Hall itself, I believe you can see Fort Negley on that nearby hilltop just left of center. The 3rd pane (02:00 - 02:09) is taken facing northwest looking back at the state capital building downtown and the Cumberland River. Thanks for posting this! I find this stuff fascinating.

FYI That last series of images of Lindsley Hall, part of the old University of Nashville campus, does still stand, but it is not part of Vanderbilt University; it houses Metro Nashville govt. offices. The remainder of the old campus, still encircled by the original stone wall of the school, has newer city buildings filling the space. It fronts on Second Avenue South in downtown Nashville. Nearby on second is the former home of Vanderbilt Medical School, which, along with Peabody College, WAS part of the old University of Nashville and merged with the new school when it came into being; Vanderbilt University was soon moved over to the open acreage between Broadway and West End, where the Federal defenses ran in 1864.
