Found out Eddie passed away today 10/6/20. It was such an honor to have experienced his art in my lifetime. I'll always feel a certain void now that he's gone but his music will live on. Thanks for everyone who visited this video on this dark day. It reminds me how big of an impact he made on all of us.
He inspired me to play guitar when I heard the solo in Beat it, then I found Eruption, Hot for teacher and so on, and found he was a God, certainly Rock will miss him...
im so sad ive never got a chance to see him and now i never will...
You do an excellent job in teaching Eddies techniques
We would LOVE to hear a cover of Panama! (after I find my jaw, it fell off the first time I heard you play that intro like that)
Eddie influenced all of us in many ways on the guitar. Will always remember the impact he had on me forever.
Love your modest, unassuming, friendly style.
What do you mean? I'm the best ever! haha.. jk Thanks. :)
And now he's gone. Rest in peace, Eddie!
"and that's when i knew he was an alien"
he's gone home RIP eddie
Don't forget my jaw is dropped down a half step.
XD
Mines a whole step
Eddie Van halen = Genius..innovator and pioneer..
And corpse
Sorry
@@zachlewis9751 😐
@@zachlewis9751 funny huh
BEst that ever was or will be.
I still remember how shocked I was when I learned 35 years ago that Cathedral was played on a guitar.
FloodyBoy Randal no, ed plays it live, smartass. He does it with delay and the volume knob.
@@bossHogOG Yup he does bro!
@ joelouis321 I thought the same thing when I heard "Eruption" when their 1st album dropped in. I was like" No WAY any guitar can sound like that !!" That is why EVH is the greatist ever. Not even Jimi was ever like that
That song should have been played WORLDWIDE the day he passed 🙏🏼❤️
@Randy Randal It's not studio controls, you just really quickly turn the volume up and down. He does it live.
The man was truly the Mozart of his time. Creativity on the guitar that no one else possessed. RIP to the GOAT.
Eddie really is another Voodoo Child. Hell, he even chopped the strings down with the edge of his hand.
DefinAndStuff he picked up all the pieces and built eruption
Might even just raise a little Panama
He kissed this guy
😂
Van Halen I think spawned 1,000,000 guitar players
I think he probably would still be listed as the best guitar player around and VH 1 & 2 were 40 freaking years ago
I think he inspired a lot more people to pick up a guitar. Definitely a big reason I did
Naw I think 1,000,001 to be exact 👍
R.I.P. Eddie, One of the Guitar Greats! Great Lesson keeping it rocking!
EXCELLENT TEACHER! Able to play proficiently and explain clearly.
My jaw dropped when you started playing Panama. Id love to see a full cover, that tone you had there was fantastic to me
Eddie's guitar sound on Panama is fantastic especially the doodling solo piece.
I am watching this at 6 am just before I go to the grind!! This is the only time I had to watch your video! I can hardly wait to get home and try out these ideas! I have a pedal board with a flanger, delay, OD/distortion and a phaser pedal! You have made me a very happy woman! Thx! You're amazing and I can't thank you enough!!!
these vids are the best, I like how it's not just licks from songs u actually show us the techniques
Eddie inspired many to play guitar and caused a few to give it up as well ! Rip my all time favorite 👍🏻
I saw a smirk when you hit that first artificial harmonic
Hahaha!! 😆 😆
I thought I was the only one who noticed that until I saw your comment! He's got that pleased-with-himself smirk on his face that says "yep, totally nailed it".
RIP this guitar legend. He was an amazing player that really showed me what crazy things you can do on an electric. I hope we see his like again
Eddie was definitely the last founding father of rock guitar in our era, he brought a futuristic rock guitar sound to the 70s music world that was very different to Clapton and Hendrix of the 60s. The whammy bar and artificial harmonic effects was two of his signature sounds, along with the digital sound effects of the flanger, delay and others. He paved the way for all the 80s rock guitar slingers who more or less tried to perfect his sound and techniques especially his shredding sound which a lot of 80s rock guitarists perfected to an extreme level. His shredding technique wasn't perfect but you knew where he was trying to go with it. He had other signature sounds and techniques which all in all gave us a futuristic sci-fi rock guitar sound of sophistication and artistic creativity.
It makes me wonder if there's any more uncharted rock guitar territory that needs founding? Maybe the rock guitar feedback sustain sound still needs exploring? I know Eddie did a little bit on the intro of the song "Everybody wants some" I wish he had of done way more of the feedback sustain technique, I think that would of blown all our brains out period!! It's such a beautiful sound and technique if you know how to apply it effectively in rock music.
I don't think Eddie ever realized how much impact and ground breaking new rock guitar sounds he had brought to the world stage of guitar music 🤔
Rest in peace and love Eddie ❤️ 🎸
This is what a lot of people didn't realize, including myself, that his "brown sound" really came down to his style of playing and his hands on the guitar. Eddie will forever be the best guitarist ever. He may not have the technical chops as say Vai or Satriani, but he doesn't need to be. His style was attitude with in your face guitar playing back then and just his innate ability to play. Great video. Thanks
I agree more beer.he was the hendrix of the 80s his tone and use of effects and atack of guitar was extraordinary awesome
Don't underestimate Eddie, he does things live in concert that would bury anyone.
No Jason Becker was the best and if he could still play he would literally be the guy to learn from. Ed is slop.
I can literally play everything he plays when he does his solo guitar solo
@@cambell9 LMAO your so full of shit boy, hows about you link a vid of your playing 😂😂
I keep coming back to this, greatest tutorial on the net, very well explained as well as demonstrated, so very well done AND some of the very best guitar sounds!
Thanks so much for this.
Greatest of all time. Inspired more people and changed guitar forever.
Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo in live without a net is one of my favorites, I like Joe Satriani and Steve also, but you can't take away the influence Eddie must have had on them
The first time I listened to Eruption, which was when VH's first album came out... I know I am old... I was absolutely blown away. I was a kid at the time and after hearing that I thought to myself, man I need to learn how to play the guitar. So I picked it up and I still don't know how to play eruption, but I did learn several other of EVH's riffs and licks and that helped me a lot in my playing ability. What I love about EVH is his ability to inject a kind of "swing" in his playing that gave him a unique style. His tapping technique was actually not new at the time, but he took it to a new level. His tone was actually pretty basic when you look back on it now since it was just a PAF pickup running through a Marshal with all knobs turned to "11". But he figured out that getting that tone which allowed him to achieve the sound he wanted was not easy with an 100 Watt Amp that would blow your head off and a pickup that would squeal like crazy at that volume. So he threw a variac to lower the volume without affecting the distorted tone and he placed the pickup in melted surfboard wax to prevent it from squealing and the rest is history. I have often heard that the tone of the guitar affects how you play and the more I play the guitar the more I believe that statement. I personally think that EVH had an idea of what he wanted to achieve, but as he set out to achieve it by modifying his tone from the guitar/amp/effects that it modified how he played as well and so it caused his playing to exponentially increase in style and technique that was different from what others were doing at the time. Similar to Jimi Hendrix and what he was doing in the 60's and early 70's. Just my 2 cents.
Ezekiel33USA - Yes I remember the goosebumps when WJRR out of Orlando played the entire album when I was headed to the beach for surfing and we stayed in the car for the entire thing with jaws on the floor
Ezekiel33USA cool post. what you’re saying seems right.
Very insightful, almost philosophical approach to the evolution known as Edward Van Halen, and I agree with you given the example you added. The same could be said for Brian May and Tom Scholz.
I like how he explains things. He's easy to follow. Nice work.
Wow. This is THE best guitar lesson I’ve ever seen and heard on YT.
20:11 "thats when i knew he was an Alien" FELL ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING - funniest thing i ever heard on youtube!
Agreed! :) Got to 20:10 to cleanly catch the quote.
I never believed in Aliens but after this...yes yes YES! EEdie is an Alien.lol
He slid that comment in there so smooth I almost missed it, but the bursting laugh response that followed told me I was still listening closely enough!
Thanks for all the great tips. I really enjoy the fact that you're so humble as well...
Rest in peace eddie you were the spark that lit my guitar fire
not only did king ed come up with all those tricks but he successfully utilized them as integral parts of actual songs.
We miss you, Ed 🙏🏼❤️ Thank you for pursuing your passion and following your dreams 👏🏼
Really cool man. You cover a LOT of techniques and it's cool that you're straight up in your descriptions without putting on airs. I like the terminology as well. Nice playing dude.
These technique videos are very and I mean VERY helpful!!! Thank you for the hard work you put in to these videos man. Bravo!
Rest in peace to one of the best influencers in the timeline of rock and roll. Eddie, you will certainly be missed by everyone, but God may you fly high with the ones above
Thankfully we still have his catalogue!
And much video
This is fantastic my man! Great job
Excellent tutorial, man! Great stuff in here!
Very informative, detailed and fun to watch. I'm Learning heaps.
Thanks so much.
You are very skilled.
Thanks for the upload!
60 yrs old with classical guitar background. EVH sealed a switch to electric guitar and remains biggest fretboard influence. Great video.
Great lesson thanks for this.
Just the video i needed, keep up the great work!
Great video.👍
This man explains things in a language that radiates with me, thank you man!!!
This video really conveys what a creative and deeply innovative player Eddie is. I've grown so tired of everyone referring to his chops as merely "a bag of tricks" because it's such a hater's mentality. It's not just that he mastered a bunch of little tricks, it's how effortlessly he incorporated them into his music and how fluid and fiery his playing was. So much excitement, expression and emotional content in his guitar work.
I guess you could say that muted rake strum REALLY GOT ME
Your series right here, is what its all about man.. applying great techniques to yourself...great stuff maaan.
if there isn't one yet, there needs to be band called "Flat Five Flutter"
I think I do that on the SRV video.
+The-Art-of-Guitar oh never mind that's the major third.
I'm a huge EVH fan , thanks for the great lesson, lots of good info there, I learned a lot !! thanks''
Very nice bag of tricks. Amazing! Thank You.
One of the best Guitar teaching videos in the net. Congrats + two thumbs up
watching the full video now that i have time. very informative. And wow impressed with the sounds you get from that guitar. Assuming the stock pickups are still in there and it shows what a good player can do. I have the guitar so always nice to see it played by someone good so i can stop blaming my equipment lol.
This is why EVH is my favorite guitarist. Look at all these fun and unique techniques you really can’t find anywhere else.
Kudos on the legato credit :) I love EVH, but Joe's the legato king...
Great video!
I am amazed by how much you can do, and how humble you are about it.
Just great. 👍
Fantastic lesson! Thanks, Alex
Great Teacher, awesome techniques well explained, Art of Guitar Yes mon

I’m REALLY enjoying your videos
incredible lesson. Thank you! \m/
Very, very pedagocial tutorials, all of a sudden I can do totally OK tap harmonics! Thank's and keep up the good work!
Great video, didn't know that much went into making those sounds!
love these, really wish you would do more
it's fun to watch videos like this and see the things in my style that I've already found, and see when famous guitarists have used them. like tap harmonics! and to see new and strange things like that volume swell business, that was cool! educational, and entertaining!
THANK YOU!!!
The harmonic slide and cathedral effect will be added to my arsenal now. Thanks mate 😎
Eddie can do anything 😁
Great series!
You are great at explaining stuff. You don't talk too much and demonstrate right away. Great video
Thankyou so much your content is so reliable I appreciate the time you took to do this ! RIP EDDIE
Thank you so much! Subscriber forever!
The most interesting 🎸 tutor video I've ever seen!!!😀
Iv'e watched a few of your videos tonight. You have a natural talent. well done.
"And that's when I knew he was an alien"... GLORIOUS!!! I learned more from this single video than years of trying to learn from others!!!
Great video!
Good instructional technique and explanation. I find it even more important than technical ability when instructional videos. You have both. 👍🏻
great player and teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nice teaching method.I'm gonna watch ALL of "em!
Excellent show ! subscribed!
the "eruption motif," also sounds like what he played in his solo breaks in "I'm the one," especially the second solo break.
This is a great video. Thanks.
great techniques! great video!
Awesome lessons! I'm very impressed with your attention to sonic details. One of the best instruction sites on the web.
You are one of the best instructors I've ever seen Great Job.
I love watching your videos. you are the best teacher by far. slow and methodical.
Good stuff man. Makes a monster manageable. Appreciate the respect for ed too.
I like how you work in the riff/lick, then tweak it by encouraging the viewer to experiment with the method. I believe this is superior to simply teaching the song/solo. You take this approach in many of your videos. Well done.
excellent tutorial. thank you!
This dude is everywhere. Bravo!
Nice coverage on the topic.
YES,thank you
Great video man💯🔥 RIP EVH
awesome as always rock on
That Kramer is sick! I LOVE flat top pickups! Plus, the humbucker angle really catches my eye.
If anyone knows what model this is, please let me know.
Save me some searching. LOL
Tom_E Calm_7 believe kramer guitars have the model name on the truss rod covers
Tom_E Calm_7 looks to me like the Truss Rod cover says “610” on it, hope it helps
Kramer Pacer Custom I
Great stuff Man Hat's off.
very good!!!!Tks
I was. Listening to VH1 in the late 76' in my 65 Mustang in front of our High School loving every note...
Great tips man!!! 🎸🎶🤘
