I remember playing this song over and over and over again as an 17 year old, almost driving the whole family crazy. Today, at the age of sixty, the feeling's exactly the same. Point is: there's no such thing as being an "adult", for the child within knows nothing about age. And the right music melts all those years like snowflakes. Thanks Nena !

I love that so many people have been here in the last few days to see this song and performance. I was in my 20s when this song broke in the 80s and this performance is so astounding. God bless Nena and this message of love, hope and happiness and the only-gets-more-incredible-as-the-years-go-by performance she does to deliver it.
I'm grateful for the captions that give the actual English translation of her German lyrics, as opposed to the English version they recorded in the 80s. These original lyrics are great, and I love the expanded final lyric tag at the end. ❤️

I’m a 57 year old US Army Cold War Veteran, joined the Army in 1983, I loved this song the first time I heard it. Developed a kinda crush on Nena then as well 😏, still gorgeous now, and still love the song.

I listened this song for the first time when I was a little kid, then when I got my first computer with internet at 11 years old I started to listen more nena's music and I became in her fan, actually I'm 27 and still listeing her great music, during the lockdown I decided to start german lessons, actually I'm a begginer with the language but thank you Nena for showing me how great is Germany, german language and german people.

I think she's more beautiful now than she was in the 70s. I don't know what it is about the song, which became popular when I was in the US Army stationed in Frankfurt AM, but it has always made me tearful. Perhaps, it's the fear we all had back then or perhaps it's the innocence of wishing it would stop.. I can't be sure but I still feel it at 69, all these years later.

I am from Canada and I fell in love with Nena's voice and this song when I was a young teenager. Song reminds me of so many great times and memories. The English lyrics different but it didn't matter when that red balloon blew up and away in the sky. I wish I could get those days back.
Me too! I’m from Nova Scotia. It is one of the most iconic songs of the decade. It was a huge hit here in Canada too, I remember. Both the German and English versions. I prefer the German myself.

Greetings from small town USA.. I'm only 44 today.. but I remember my much older sisters rocking this song back in the day! (Both the German and English versions). Even into my 20s I had both versions recorded back to back on one of my cassette tapes... remember those??? Lol!
My 8 year old come home last week rocking a 10 year old cover of this song!! I had to play him both the versions I remembered!.. on CZcams because I couldn't find my cassette!! Lol! I know a tiny bit of German but this is the only version there should ever be, the English version must have been done for some crazy reason. I was probably about 14yrs old when this came out in 1983 still love it. This concert in 2018 would have been fabulous to get to guessing lots of Gen X'ers.
I love the fact that Nena had bothered to have the entire concert translated into English so her fans everywhere can enjoy it and feel included not just those with superb knowledge of German language.

This was beautiful! I've loved this song since I was a boy. Short story, I went out to a Karaoke bar in Tokyo in 2003 with a few geusts from Sweden one night and we chose 99 Luftballons. I only knew it in english and they only knew it in German. I learned how to sing in German that night.
I’m a huge Nena fan and this is the first time I’ve seen the German lyrics translated to English. The German lyrics are worlds better!
The English version sounds absolutely superficial by comparison.
Side note: “Das Land der Elefanten” by Nena has followed me through 4 decades of my life. That powerful, raw tribal beat up-ends me even 40 years on.
