Audie was proof that it wasn't the size of the soldier that counted, but the size of the fight in the soldier. We will never see anyone like him again.
The actual action was even more disturbing. In detail it was described the sheer gore there was from point blank firing the mg and how it ripped the German gunners to pieces. He was disturbed by many things he did then and later. He also suffered massive drug addictions after the war to cope with the trauma.
My mom and dad LOVED Audie Murphy. Anytime one of his movies came on TV it was a big event . Mom would make a big snack spread and we would all watch it. My dad was a WW2 vet and loved western movies and music. He thought Audie was the best. My mom thought Audie was the best looking man that ever was. I too am a fan of his movies , music., poems and much respect for his military duty. RIP ...mom , dad and Audie.
When the fighting fog clears and the adrenaline wears off, there must've been so many random emotions going through his head, trying to make sense of what happened.
Audie murphy is reputed to have killed around 230 men in WW2. I don't know how you cope with that and it's not a surprise that he had a form of PTSD I believe.
And the immediacy of it must contribute to the strain. One minute you and your buddy are alive, and moments later he and several of the enemy are dead. Had to be traumatic.
I can still remember when Walter Cronkite, who knew him from the war, reported his death in a plane crash: "Audie Murphy, America's most decorated soldier in WW2, used to say that he was fugitive from the law of averages. Today the law of averages caught up to him, dead in a plane crash at the age of 46."
One of my favorite war movies... To Hell And Back. Awesome machine-gun kills. 0:30 and 2:09... from the safety of their bunker, the German machine-gunner cut down the American soldiers. But one man... Audie Murphy... returned the favor and made 'em pay.
Yes, the movie is terrific and the book is even better if you ever get the chance to read it. He was some guy and you didn't want to be in a German uniform if you met him!!!!!

Yes, he was most likely damaged by some of the things he had to do. The book is very graphic I agree.

A real-life hero - and humble with it.

@@thesixshooter6506 Very much so!
I know it’s a movie.. but damn I’m reminded how light WW2 loads were. No body armor, steel helmets and no packs…
👍
Heaven is for Heroes, May He R.I.P.
Yes, a brave man indeed.

It was a tragic end for a guy who so often had won against the odds for sure.

Only thing about a lot of the American made WW2 pictures was their filming locations. California looks nothing like Europe.
Saving money I guess.
