  • The building envelope is the barrier which separates the conditioned space from the unconditioned space, your exterior walls, windows, roof, etc. Getting the building envelope right is more important than any of your finish materials and it is where you should be looking to make all the upgrades you can possibly afford.

Well said, re: building code. Love this topic of building envelope and so much to talk about. So much to learn.

Hi Chris. I'm starting to plan for a custom home in Bend, OR (Zone 5b). Want to build the envelope to PGH standards (if budget allows). Based on your comment "stay away from vinyl windows!" I'm curious what windows you are recommending for your clients these days. Would prefer triple pane, I think.

I like Pella Windows and Marvin Fiberglass windows for most of my projects. There is also the Pella Luxury Division which has a few different sub-companies that make incredible windows www.pellaluxury.com/ Sierra Pacific windows are also really good. If you want a step up from all of those, in terms of performance than you could go with European windows. Makrowin and Schuco brands are good.
If you are familiar with PGH, (do you have the book?) they have a chapter on windows that you should find interesting. One of the tenants of PGH is that it should, and can work with almost all budgets. Windows are the #1 heat loss in a home, and even the best windows are not as efficient as the worst wall construction, so if there is one place to splurge that is it.
Here is a link to PGH book on Amazon if you don't have it.

    What’s your opinion on Barndominiums?

Honestly, Im not a fan, but I get why they are appealing to people. For me, having a built structure that relates to the land and the specific environmental conditions and then also how that unique family will use their home is so much more important.
