- I don't expect anyone to watch this video. No, really! It's long and keeps all the boring bits in, but that's kind of the point, isn't it.
Are you thinking of getting into dice making? Enjoy watching short little videos of people making dice and wonder how much time it actually takes to make a set? Or maybe you're just not sure why handmade dice are just so gosh darn expensive! Well, here's the video for you. In this video, I make a set of dice from start to finish in real active work time.
Keep in mind these don't have any fancy inclusions, which sometimes take hours to make, and there's a lot of time that goes into things behind the scenes, too, like marketing, shipping, and in this case video editing. Dice making is time consuming! (But so much fun :D)
Here's some timestamps to make it easier to skip around to different sections :)

I'm so glad you made this video. I've had a 'friend' tell me that our dice sets were too expensive despite knowing how much work goes into them. This set you made is so gorgeous too! Might be stealing the pigment puck idea, too...
This is fantastic!
I just finally finished this video. I really appreciate getting to see in depth how much work goes into not only making the dice but cleaning things in preparation for the resin. Definitely appreciate the prices of dice more now after watching this.
Yeah, when I first started looking into handmade dice I was like "why are these so expensive???" and then after starting to make them myself and spending around 3 hours per set (if not more with more complicated sets, and not to mention the time that now goes into the business stuff) it was a moment of "ah. I see why, now" XD
wonderful set :)
Your bowtie is absolutely amazing! Also, maybe do a dice set where you use scrap resin? Like the stuff you get from cleaning cups.
Oh, thanks XD. And yeah, I've been meaning to do something with it at some point. I have SO MUCH leftover scrap. Like. SO much.
I'm over here admiring your resin color chips instead of making my dice. 😂 That's an amazing idea, your work is beautiful!
Lol, thanks. The color chips have been super helpful when planning things out or trying to get just that perfect color. Sometimes pigments just look so different once they're actually in the resin! (Have fun pouring dice!)
where did you get your masters from? I've been looking to buy some custom ones!
Revel Broker! They do everything through their patreon now (www.patreon.com/RevelBroker), but they've been wonderful to work with :) (for how it works, you join their patreon at any level, and then you get access to their shop where you can order masters for ~$100. They have lots of options for die shapes, fonts, and you can get custom faces as well.)
Do you only take your dice through the green zona for sanding and then tumble the rest of the way?
I use the green zona on a flat lap to get all the edges off, and then I go through 1000, 2000, and 3000 grit wet-dry sandpaper
Where do you get your molds? Do you make them?
Yep, I make them. Making molds also adds a fair amount of time to the process as well, but I figured that's kind of its own thing.
The sanding... oh the sanding...
It never ends XD
I thought the thing people were doing, instead of sanding, was to use a rock polisher (the vibrating kind).
I do use a tumbler to polish :). It's just after I sand off lips and edges. I've heard that using a rock tumbler rounds the edges, which I don't really want.
yeah that’s what the thing at 1:54:54 is, it’s a vibratory tumbler with wooden media
and this video still doesn't show all the time..sanding takes sooo long.
It does! I've got it down to a little quicker these days, I think. I tried to keep in all of the sanding as much as possible, but yeah, there's lots of little things that weren't included, like walking places to get things and some of the brainstorming time and such. Plus this is all ACTIVE work time, there's so much time that it takes where I'm just waiting to be able to move on to the next step.
So many days tumbling... 😮 Is that really nessessary? I've heard 2 days are enough or even just 12 h.
I tend to do mine for a lot longer than other folks, yeah, but also I tumble them till there are /zero/ scratches. Most folks seem pretty happy tumbling them for less time.
