Another awesome SCIENCE FICTION dealer warehouse visit & book haul, this time with Jules Burt!

  • After visiting my friend Bob- a longtime SF collector and casual dealer - in January, I knew I'd have to return in February with my other bibliomaniac chum and former bookselling colleague Jules Burt. So here's another look at Bob's warehouse in Dorset and the books I hauled this time. Jules' video on the same subject launches simultaneously with this one, don't miss it!

    I appreciate the shout-out Steve, but I fear it makes me sound somewhat notorious as well. 😅
    And you are correct, it is some sort of a problem I have. 😉 I believe we share a common source of some peccadilloes : young people on booktube waxing nostalgic about things they know nothing about. (For example, well quaffed middle Americans under 20 going on about Gollancz being the most authoritative source for all things science fiction based upon where-ever they were sent by an algorithm.)
    I love folks of your generation ( just a hair older than mine) talking about glowing memories of amazing books found in their local libraries - BRILLIANT!
    In the States the need to market with exciting rather than stolid covers is much more indicative of the history of the market. In horror, detective and science fiction, our marketplace seemed to hold onto its pulpy-er antecedents. My childhood memories of going to the local library are filled with lurid depictions of surrealist landscapes, queer flora that promised unexplored realities, danger, daring do, ancient secrets, and the mining of inner space as well as outer. Blish's Star Trek adaptations were probably the most stolid of the bunch. Plain, text only covers were the mark of the dehumanizing corporatization to come. They **appeared** to be just entering the market at the time, but my youthful perspective was by nature skewed to bias. They promised no wonder, only a similarity to business textbooks. The only such books with any emotional pull A) Had that 70s "computer font" and B) were about UFOs and their connections to Bigfoot built pyramids. So - to be clear - I don't begrudge anyone their pleasant, nostalgic associations ( and hate to come across as if I do) but I find Americans of my demographic strangely lacking representation on Book Tube, and I know that they're out there; from years of traveling around the US used book hunting, attending cons, publishing, cavorting with zine publishers, and the like - sometimes i just need to draw a line in the sand and say "There are only 4 lights!" Although I will probably share the fate of Winston Smith for it.

      The part about the SF market responding to covers makes me think of Heinlein's "Friday" ; when it was issued in paperback with the Whelan cover there was a big publicity push behind it & it became a best seller and people were reading it EVERYWHERE! Reviews, commentary, Southern library bans for it being "too sexy", it had a big breakout appeal, appearing in drug store and supermarket spinner racks the way science fiction rarely did. It was years later when I found out that wasn't the original printing. But that was how it found its market.

      I think a lot of the more mature SF readership thinks "**** this, what's left of my life is too short to worry about what the kids think,". Me, I'm just deciding to put it out there as I've always done, but this time to a global audience. I fundamentally think CZcams needs more people like me in age and experience- and many of them are right here, making comments and it's great to be interacting with them!

    Steve, you're a bad influence old son.
    Having dispensed with over 60% of my library last year I had committed myself to not buying books ever again. Then I watch this, go out and find myself returning with a mini book haul.
    Unbeknowest to me my local second-hand bookshop had just got in a consignment of some 500 vintage SF paperbacks. Most in fine collector's condition. Apparantly they had all belonged to a cover artist who lived hereabouts and had recently passed away. Dealer didn't know his name. Anyway, there was an abundance of stuff that you've commented on and as this type of material doesn't surface here very often nowadays it seemed criminal not to avail myself of some of it. I'm sure you'll approve of my selections: a Signet edition of Ellison's BEAST THAT SHOUTED LOVE..., a Grafton COLOUR OUT OF TIME by Shea and an uncommon Basil Copper called INTO THE SILENCE. Bought eleven books in total and that was with me exercising extreme restraint. Could easily have bought many many more. But I came away knowing you'd tell me that I really must go back for all those Barrington Bayleys that were there. So I probably will.
    Like I say, you're a bad influence.

    Another excellent video! Night of the Eagle (1962) was terrific, with a fine performance from Peter Wyngarde, pre-Jason King. In his autobiography Miracles of Life, J G Ballard mentions that he knew Wyngarde (Cyril Goldbert) when they were boys in the Lunghua camp. When they saw each other in London many years later, Ballard started to speak to him, but Wyngarde cut him dead! Bit rude, that.

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal
      @outlawbookselleroriginal  Před rokem +1

      Simple: 'in print' means that the publisher of the book has the book in stock at its warehouse/distribution centre. 'Out of print' means that the publisher has sold every copy of the book. When a book goes OP, it can still be out there in the marketplace - while wholesalers and retailers can still have the book in stock, when those supplies are sold to the public, they're gone.
      Short-term wholesaler and bookshop availability doesn't mean a book isn't 'out of print' -what matters in this case is that the publisher, who is sole legal producer and distributor to second parties no longer has stock. So almost every day in my work, a customer will ask for a book that is out of print and sometimes we'll have it in stock, or there are copies still at a wholesaler. This short term 'availability' does not mean the book is in print, as I say. Only 'Available from the publisher' means 'in print'.

    A good book haul, Steve.
    You briefly mentioned ephemera, it would be good if you did a video on that at some point. You know the stuff I mean, the things we serious collectors acquire on our book collecting journey. For me that includes manuscripts/typescripts including a number unpublished, original art, galley proofs and book proofs, masses of letters from authors, etc. You must have a lot of similar stuff.

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal
      @outlawbookselleroriginal  Před rokem +1

      I have some, but it's modest, really- I have a few letters and other bits, but proofs and so on I tended never to collect or hang onto, as in the sharp end of the book trade you do take these things for granted- I know Jules Burt has tons of stuff, including what I wish I had kept-publisher catalogues. Plus space has ALWAYS been a massive issue for me. I'm now genuinely out of space apart from a slot that will fit around 6 'a formats' and some space on top of other books for 3-5 small hardcovers. So my next 'book haul' may be my last for a good while- but I have sold some stuff on ebay this week, good news.

    Publishing terminology:
    I'm totally with you. I don't expect people to know "in-house jargon," but once their coverage becomes in depth enough to leave them looking for the right word to use, it is frustrating that they're using the wrong ones. When I worked for Penguin USA we all understood the word "proof" ( the correct word of printing jargon) and usually used synonymously with "galley" as in a printed and bound galley. If there was any use of the term "advanced readers copy" it usually referred to books that looked like finished copies, but usually had promotional information on the cover : ("not final art", "national promotional tour", etc.)
    The Singleton / Standalone difference always felt a little more organic to me. Singleton felt like convenience business slang for which the word "book" had previously sufficed. Whereas "Stand Alone" seemed to be a term of necessity coined by a public drowning in post 80s genre fiction designed to be purchased by the sack, so I'm a little more forgiving of it.
    Great video, so much I'd like to ask, but those videos are coming. . .

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal

      As I understand it, a galley is the print proof the author gets to make actual corrections on (mine were done electronically). You're right about ARCs too, of course.
