    In the Cinema bookshop I see some Vance and Van Vogt with blue dot stickers on the spine... I think that they were once mine. I used to label my books with coloured dots with different colours denoting how much I liked them. Did anyone else here do this? Oooh I love book word pedantry! Some lovely Pan Lozenge covers there too thanks.

    Nice to see some Alexander Baron. I'm a fan of his; he was Hackney born and bred. From the City From the Plough is a great novel. The Lowlife is great, too. Last year I read King Dido. Five Leaves Press out of Nottingham recently published a nice little study of his work. I have a biography of Baron, too, which I have yet to read. At the book-launch at the Hackney Archives it was introduced by Baron's grandson, iirc. Ken Worpole also led a walk a few years ago around Baron-land - largely Dalston and Newington Green. I'm slowly working my way through his work. The John Collis book you have there - The Worm Forgives the Plough - is, I think, a condensation of a couple of books originally published separately. I have read a number of his nature books; I found them quite transcendental! Visions of Glory is another of his I would recommend. I wouldn't be surprised if Roger Deakin was inspired by Collis.

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal
      @outlawbookselleroriginal  Před měsícem +1

      I suspect you're right about the Collis-Deakin thing. Baron deserves wider attention, I agree.

    Great to see that edition of Triton which was about the last novel I read in my Samuel Delany phase, when I read almost everything he'd written to that point. (Including the superb memoir Heavenly Breakfast.) A band I was in (eons ago) was called Avoiding Kangaroos, after a chapter title from Triton. Memories!

    You're right. I DO sometimes post info for "comment readers" as well as for you, but surely no one can pre-apologize for it more than I do. I really DON'T want to waste your time reading -but we MUST show engagement, and if I spark *more* engagement, more's the better.
    Not that you *were* talking to me. . . ;)
    A lot of those books are just wonderful editions! I don't think I've EVER seen that livery for Guy Gavriel Kay.
    I always wonder, at today's prices, how reasonable it is to buy new editions of classics - I know you want them pristine, but
    steep decline in value, poorer quality production, more flighty collector base - It just always feels "iffy".
    But I'm much more parsimonious than you. :)

    Re the first segment. The Wyndham book looks great! Wonderful if it's its got all or most of his short stories. I read "The Leopard" earlier this year- an extraordinary novel whose story I only knew through the Lancaster film. I have a p/b with the same cover, though it would be lovely to get the h/b. Please do a video on war novels- I have Ford Madox Ford's "Parade's End" on my TBR, maybe later in the year. I Hope you feel better soon.

      No, it's not complete- were it so, they'd have popped that in the subtitle- a complete would be much biggerm, hence my mention of NESFA, who are the sort of published who would do a proper job. I've seen 'The Leopard' film too, very good. I'm more likely to cover war novels one at a time, I think, don't know yet- I've read 'The Good Soldier', many years back - FMF also wrote and SF novel collaboratively with Conrad, entitled 'The Inheritors'...at least I think that's the title, got it here somewhere, again, read it decades ago.

    That Vintage Classics series livery is posh, Stephen. On a Vonnegut note, if you haven't ever watched the original US version Slaughterhouse-Five movie from 1972, I found it to be more faithful to the novel than just about any other novel/movie adaptation I can think of. In fact, it is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. BTW, it's absolutely evident you are influential across the genre here on YT. Have you done a video focusing on the condition of books with examples, e.g fine, mint, near mint etc? On the 26th I was in Dorset, as you'll see in the next video. I have been thinking I'll do a grading video as there are clear standards, it's just that there are amateurs online trying to sell stuff by calling substandard items 'Mint'. There are also SF booktubers whose idea of what mint is really does need correcting.....

      I tend to visit Hay early in the week and I think they are basically closed on Monday and Tuesday- but I have been this year on Wednesday and they were shut then too. Glancing through their windows, they seem to stock popular books you can buy anywhere, which is pretty pointless in a place like Hay, though as I've said, as a tourist destination for the average lightweight who 'loves books' but never heard of it until they learned of the festival, Hay is going increasingly mainstream- which makes it far less special than it was. My feeling is that in ten years time, Hay will truly be finished once the older, more serious dedicated booksellers retire.
