    I'm 93 and I have had this same type of flattop since I was 15. The best one I had was a former barber at the Marine Base Camp Pendelton in California next to San Clemente, CA. He worked there for many years. He retired from Camp P job and opened his own place in San Clemente. He could cut a perfect flattop in 3 1/2 minutes. He always had a lot of Marines getting flattops in his shop.

    There is definitely an art to the flat top. I do enjoy your videos that just teach class is barbering. I have had the pleasure of working in the shop with my father for the past 20 years. He just recently had his 50th barber anniversary and he can cut a mean flat top.

      daniel ainsworth Receded hairlines are not a problem, even top hair that's thinned out can get a good flattop. All that's needed is hair that grows up and out from the scalp--lay down hair and extra fine hair are the only hair-types that should consider other kinds of haircuts

      Thanks for your kind words. Learning haircutting from this format has limitations to keep in mind.
      The popularity of haircutting postings on CZcams is largely due to no cost, but cost shouldn’t be your primary consideration. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting down CZcams-it gave me much needed help on several projects, but haircutting is a subject that doesn’t work so good in the CZcams format, Here are some of the problem areas:
      1) Many of those postings don’t teach much at all, instead they’re just a good show, but without needed explanations. 2) Successful barbers have important skills besides haircutting, such as knowing about the various hair factors that determine what kind of haircuts can (and can’t) be given, and the questions you need to ask so people get what they want. 3) Learning how to cut hair from different experts is a sure path to confusion. Different ways of cutting may be good to learn if you’re experienced, but it’s just too much for most beginners.
      The different haircuts I’ve posted on CZcams gives a good picture of how I teach the subject. If you like my way of showing and explaining, you should get your hands on my DVDs and book because I won’t do any more posting on CZcams. I still have a large inventory of how-to that shows how to give always-popular barber shop haircuts. They are affordably priced and are absolutely guaranteed to make you HAPPY with your purchase.
      Check out my website, www.traditionalhaircutting.com ,and while you’re at it, see what my customers have to say in the testimonial section and check out Bob’s Tips-good stuff there.

    Oh Bob, that' exactly the flat-top I've tried to get the last four barbers to do for me !! But, they all ended up cutting it "military flat-top" style...and on me it looked like " a narrow brick sitting on top of a bowling ball." I just could not make them understand about blending and rounding the corners like you just did . Thanks for this video. I'll keep looking for the right barber. But I'm about ready to give up my flat-top.... because I can't find anyone to do it like you do ! Ive worn a flattop for about 20 years and the lady who currently cuts my hair does it nearly the same as you 000 on the sides but she free hands a 00000 down the middle. A very short flattop with the tapered corners as you demonstrate. It will last about 2 1/2 weeks.

      Through the years flattops have been a haircut for men an boys, but in the last decade or two ladies are getting them too. The only difference is ladies, with some exceptions, like them on the longer side--a half-inch on the sides with the top cut to an inch or more. The longer flattops need coarse, straight hair, but again, there are some exceptions.

    I am currently in barber school. They don't teach us much. They just through us out there and tell us that's how we will learn. I am very nervous when a client walks into the school for a hair cut. I really don't where to start on a hair cut. Any advice?

    • @bobohnstad8505
      @bobohnstad8505  Před 7 lety +1

      The first thing is to ask is "How do you like your hair cut?" Listen carefully, then a close look at their hair will tell you if you'll just be trimming their hair (cutting off the hair that has grown out since their last haircut) or will their haircut wishes have you making a big change from what they've had in the past. This second possibility requires you to analyze their hair as to hair texture (how thick or thin the hair is), hair type (straight or wavy or curly or kinky), and also hair grain problems that may impact what length or overall shaping you will be able to do with your cutting efforts.
      Sometimes your hair analysis doesn't "fit" with the haircut your customer has in mind, which means you will need to explain the limitations their hair has and how that influences what can be done. Yes, there are times when a barber has to educate their customer as to what can and can't be done.
      Exactly how the hair qualities impact your hair length and shaping possibilities are questions that can't be covered in this small space--my book and/or my "Precision Clipper Cutting" videos cover this subject in depth. Take the time to get good at this business of "Hair Communication"; it's a crucial aspect of being a successful barber.

      Thanks a lot for your kind words. My DVD “Precision Scissor Cuts” is a two-hour video showing most all scissor haircuts, from short to the long. I believe it will meet your needs.
      The popularity of haircutting postings on CZcams is largely due to the zero cost, but cost shouldn’t be the only consideration. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting down CZcams-it gave me much needed help on several projects, but haircutting is a subject that doesn’t work well , Here are some problem areas:
      1) Many of those postings don’t teach much at all, instead they are just a good show without needed explanations. 2) Successful barbers have important skills besides cutting skills-success depends on different things that can’t get covered on CZcams. 3) Learning how to cut hair from a number of experts is a sure way to get confused when your customer is in the chair trying to explain what they want-that’s no time to try to recall who showed what, when and how.
      The different haircuts I’ve posted on CZcams gives a good picture of how I teach the subject. If you like my way of showing and explaining, you should get your hands on my DVDs and book because I won’t do any more posting on CZcams. I still have a garage-full of how-to that shows how to give always popular barber shop haircuts-they are affordably priced and are absolutely guaranteed to make you HAPPY with your purchase.
      Check out my website, www.traditionalhaircutting.com ,and while you’re at it, see what my customers have to say in the testimonial section and check out Bob’s Tips-good stuff there.

    Thanks! I've been a barber for a month and have been trying to get this haircut down after never seeing it in barber school lol.
    A lot of people say they want it shorter up front when I show them the finished product because I line the front up with the crown, so where the crown might be an eighth inch the bangs might be a quarter or so inch, but it is flat.
    When I fix it and shorten the bangs , the flattop slopes down from a profile view and that messes me up mentally because I conceptualize a flattop as flat from head on, the side, the back and any angle probably because of the nomenclature.
    This video was a great help and I hope me expressing my difficulties can help other barbers in the same boat work through some stuff.
    Thank you again, wonderful tutorial.

    Except that the corners should not be rounded, they should be square. I like other places very much. I especially like your downward-sloping flat top, like a trapezoid, which makes people see the step surface. This is the essence of why the flat top has a masculine look

    • @bobohnstad8505
      @bobohnstad8505  Před 8 lety +1

      +Jim Shorts
      Hi Jim,
      I'm absolutely positive that 55 is a great age to take up barbering. Because you can work at the profession part-time, full-time, leave it and come back to it as long as you're physically and mentally able, you'll never be sorry you took up this (truly) enjoyable way to make a living.
      How long to learn depends on you, but a rough guess is two to three years to get a well-rounded "bag" of skills, but you'll continue to pick up additions to that bag for years. If you're motivated you'll make it through barber school without a problem (they range from six months to a year). When you're into the apprenticeship phase you'll need some patience as your real learning takes place and you're in the process of building up a bunch of happy customers.
      It doesn't take long to understand why barbers rank near the top of job satisfaction studies.
