  • On episode 159 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, I'm fixing my blind spots in metal! As a death metal fan, I live in a bit of an underground bubble. I don't know as much as I should about metalcore. So this week I'm exploring the new albums from Boundaries and While She Sleeps. These are two very different bands underneath the Metalcore umbrella and this is also an issue I have. We'll discuss what it means to be Metalcore and how to differentiate bands in the genre. We'll talk about the resurgence of hardcore and much more! Join us.

    back around the 2008-2012 era we would call we came as romans post hardcore while parkway drive august burns red etc were proper metalcore acts, many bands were experimenting with a lot of things and it really was hard to catalogue anyone at some point lol
    for me BOUNDRIES is literally the first band in years that have this RAW ASS metalcore sound of the early 2000s while many 'metalcore' bands just sound anemic today. BOUNDRIES GIVES ME FEELS

    metalcore pretty much grew out of being a sub genre into being its own genre with its own sub genres, theres quite a bit of metalcore sub genres compared to before like progressive metalcore, nu-metalcore, blackend metalcore, crabcore, melodic metalcore, pissedcore, etc, nik nocturnal made a evolution of metalcore video with the old guitarist of as i lay dying, I definitely recommend checking it out to understand metalcore as a whole!

    Death metal has a very varied styles as well. Atheist, Cannibal Corpse, Dark Tranquillity, Morbid Angel and Gorguts are all death metal and very diverse bands coming from completely different perspectives. I don't have an issue therefore that metalcore is a wide umbrella.

    Metalcore is great. People pigeonhole it as whiny music for angsty teenagers, but that's only one part of a hugely-nuanced genre. It started out as a subset of hardcore punk (Earth Crisis, All Out War, Visions of Disorder), then took lots and lots of influences from melodeath (I Killed the Prom Queen, As Blood Runs Black, early Trivium, Darkest Hour), then became super popular off of bands like Of Mice and Men, Asking Alexandria, Bullet for My Valentine and Alesana, and now it's...in a bit of a weird state thanks to the TikTok-ification of the genre.
    I love bands from all the phases of the genre, but my favorite is the Gothenburg-style-melodeath-but-with-breakdowns period.

    Hey I know what you mean. I grew up through middle and high school on nu-metal first and then metalcore and everything else that was on Headbangers Ball, so pretty much everything from Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, 36 Crazyfists, and As I Lay Dying to Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Shadows Fall, In Flames, and Arch Enemy. These days I mostly listen to prog metal and especially more technical and djent-influenced metal, so most of the metalcore I listen to at this point is along the lines of bands like Periphery, Invent Animate, Volumes, After the Burial, and then definitely some of the more hardcore-leaning stuff like Knocked Loose. I agree though, it's a wide genre and there's definitely a handful of bands that popped up around 2010 that went too... "emo" maybe, for my taste? And on top of that it's a little over-saturated with bands doing the same thing, not that other metal genres don't have that issue. Deftones is my favorite band of all time though so I also love some of the newer bands that are heavy(-ish) that have that Deftones "wall of sound" vibe as I like to call it, such as Spiritbox and Sleep Token. But ultimately, the melodic death metal-influenced, riff-focused, metalcore will always reign supreme.

    Hey John, I have question for you. It's a divisive question. What is your opinion on people wearing Death Metal shirts as a fad, because they like the design. With them not knowing any of the music from the band. 30+ years ago I guess they were called Posers. People are split on this topic and I was curious to your thoughts.

      I only care in one very specific instance. A lot of my peers started playing in country bands because that's a gig that actually pays.. Then they wear a Slayer shirt on stage so they can show everyone that they're actually cool....

    I'm a fellow old head metal fan, who never really got into metalcore. I've listened to metalcore bands back in the day without realizing they were metalcore, like Straight Line Stitch. It just sounded different than the metal I'd normally listen to, so I was intrigued. But it never really took off for me.
    I need, like, a metalcore starter kit. I'm trying to get into metalcore.

    • @heavymetalphilosophy
      @heavymetalphilosophy  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I'm definitely no expert, but I'd say Converage for early metalcore. Killswitch for 2k era melodic metalcore, and then architects for the post 2010 djent era and now While She Sleeps and Profiler are sort of a modern in between metalcore and nu-metal blend.

      Northlane - Singularity;
      Invent Animate(Greyview, Heavener);
      Loathe - I let It In And It Took Everything;
      Oceans Ate Alaska - Hikari;
      Phinehas - The Fire Itself;
      Currents - The Way It Ends;
      Silent Planet - Iridescent;
      Alpha Wolf - A Quiet Place To Die;
      Veil of Maya - [M]other;
      Thornhill - Dark Pool;
      Make Them Suffer - How To Survive A Funeral;
      Johnny Booth - Moments Elsewhere;
      Boundaries - Death Is Little More;
      Yeah, some bands are experimental and may sound really different from each other due to their general roots, also some include different genres besides metalcore

    You know what could be an interesting topic? "Mysgnostic" themes in death metal. For example the new Gorgasm album cover. Personally I don't mind because I know why they're doing it, for the shock factor and I would say that's kind of what death metal has always been about. I still think it could be an interesting topic though. I feel like 10 years ago nobody in the scene gave a damn about impaled women on album covers and titles like "whore to a chainsaw" or whatever. In 2024 however different story. I recently watched a podcast with a slam band named Peeling Flesh and they basically said those mysgnostic themes are outdated and you gotta go with the times implying you shouldn't do that anymore. It's weird to me because death metal is filled with extreme lyrics about murder, mutilation but mysogny is where they cross the line

    • @heavymetalphilosophy
      @heavymetalphilosophy  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I briefly touched on it on episode 104 Black Metal versus Death metal. I really only take issue when a band seems to only abuse women in their lyrics. There's a handful of bands where it's literally every song.
      You know when we watch horror movies, women die. But if it was only women ever. And there's 5 sequels to that franchise and in every sequel it's still only women... Well I'm gonna find the directors and writers of those movies a little sus.

    • @TimmyTurner421
      @TimmyTurner421 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@heavymetalphilosophy that makes a lot of sense. When they keep attacking a specific gender or demographic it's definitely sus. Though for every death metal song where a woman gets abused there are probably 100 songs where they don't specify in their lyrics who is at the receiving end. Now that I think about it most death metal lyrics are gender neutral hahaha
      Gonna watch episode 104 now. You have a great thing going with this channel. I would say you could experiment even more with different video ideas and see how it goes

    I agree with the "Metal Core" being just too big of an umbrella. There's a lot of really heavy bands that don't have the clean vocals that I hate! Back in the early/mid 2000's I was listening to Full Blown Chaos, A Perfect Murder, Cataract, and my all time favorite Unearth 🤘None of these bands had any boy band sounding vocals that just ruin what could be a great band or album. I really enjoy some of the modern day Metal Core bands like Harms Way and especially Mouth For War🤘😎🍻

      I would agree for more extreme metal like death and black metal. But metal in general has been mainstream since the 80s. They play Metallica on classic rock radio now. There's a metal store in every mall.
      Sure we might not consider the mainstream metal as highly as our favorites but it's still there.
      But to your point, even popular metal like Sleep Token or BMTH is dwarfed in monthly Spotify listeners by Taylor Swift or The Weeknd.
