I feel like the phrase “expert climber” is synonymous with “simply not dying on this specific expedition” when a lot of the people who climb these mountains are pros in the physical sense but not in climbing mountains, those aren’t the same thing just because they’re extremely fit. Very few of these climbers are really truly apt at their sport I feel like.

I bet people that climb mountains get to the top and look around and think “oh man, I thought it was gonna be a better view”

It seems like at least on Everest people don’t spend much time at the summit, I guess I’ve always thought people climbed because it was a challenge, not so much the view

Then some science nerd tells you, Mt Chimborazo is actually the closest one can get to the moon; Everest isn’t the “highest point”.

When skiing down such a huge, steep mountain, how does one NOT cause an avalanche? That’s one of those things called a “no brainer”. All that snow just waiting for something to dislodge it. You’re skiing across areas not preceded by anyone, all the way down, and you expect there WON’T be an avalanche?

Great point, Nebraska is pretty flat where I live so while we are used to snow, I’ve never given much thought to avalanches (I’ve been to Colorado several times and skied some growing up but green runs for me!)

Horrible parents do this to their kids. Just have your kids when our bodies are meant to 18-25
. Then when you’re kids are 20 you’ll be 40
easy, then do everything . Fools. So happy I had mine at 21
. Grossly selfish of any parent but a mother? Our loves are meant to be stronger then all.. these climbs take MONTHS.. so she was gone for months at a time. Kids probably barely knew her

No one would ever criticize a father the way they do mothers for taking risks. The deaths that anger me are the ones who ARENT prepared for their climbs and others end up dying because of them like sherpas. she was obviously very talented at what she did and we can live in bubble wrap our whole lives. I gave up motorcycles when we had our son but my husband didn’t, as I was told I am the ‘mom’ and shouldn’t take extra risks. Son is now 15 and learning to ride motorcycles and I’m finally back to riding with my husband on his (didn’t get my permit again and probably won’t, however I’m considering a trike as a safer alternative.)

Mount Everest's peak is the highest altitude above mean sea level at 29,029 feet [8,848 meters].
Mount Chimborazo's peak is the furthest point on Earth from Earth's center. The summit is over 6,800 feet [2,072 meters] farther from Earth's center than Mount Everest's summit.
In height, Everest is the highest, you're talking about closest to space from the centre of earth, in which Mt Chimborazo wins.
