  • Bonanza - Episode 78 - The Frenchman - Hoss insults a feisty Frenchman who demands satisfaction with swords, unaware that the little rogue believes himself to be the reincarnation of medieval, outlaw poet Francois Villon and is destined to suffer his namesake's fate of being sentenced to death on the gallows for murder.
    The Frenchman
    Director: Christian Nyby
    Writer: Norman Lessing
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 10 December 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Written by Norman Lessing, "The Frenchman" stars Andre Phillipe as the title character, a flamboyant gent who claims to be the reincarnation of François Villon. Hoss Cartwright, at first only mildly annoyed by the Frenchman's empty boasts, ends up verbally clashing with the man, and as a result is challenged to a duel. Meanwhile, Hoss' brother Joe falls in love with "Villon's" sister Eloise. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"Andre Phjillippi and Erika Peters guest sar in this Bonanza story as a man wo thinks he;s the reincarnation of Francois Vllon and his less grand but beautiful sster.
After Dan Blocker accidentally dumps him in a horse trough, he almost has to fight a duel. Fortunately Pernell Roberts is familiar enough with the work of Villon to make hm welcome. And Mchael Landon has eyes for Peters.
There's more than a bit of silliness in this program, but it's amusing enough. I could almost hear Rudolf Friml's music." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Hilarious episode! Got a huge kick out of Adam's reaction to the whole situation, and just about died laughing when Hoss started crying after hearing the poem at the end. Love the range of comedy vs seriousness in this show!

Well, call me old fashioned, but that was insanely cute. Joe, of course, is always falling in love; but Adam always plays the roll of intelligence. He does dominate every scene with a sense of rationality, as Hoss does with a sense of vulnerable kindness. Great stuff!

Min. 6:31 - François Villon (François de Montcorbier or François des Loges) - born in Paris in 1431; one source gives the date as 19 April, 1432 [O.S. April 1, 1431]. He is the best known French poet of the Late Middle Ages. He was involved in criminal behavior and had multiple encounters with law enforcement authorities.
