- Despite numerous warnings not to, we took a sleeper bus in China.
We have experienced high speed trains, regular trains, buses and now sleeper busses.
We travel from Kunming in Yunnan, and head down towards Mohan, near the Loas border which we will then attempt to cross.

Long-distance buses must rest at service areas from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., as required by regulations, to prevent safety hazards while driving at night. This regulation has been implemented in China for many years.
Sort of undermines the concept of a sleeper bus though
@@ElZilchoYo The Sleeper bus was a popular way to travel long distances in the 1990s when the railway was undeveloped. Now it is time to knock it out, at least in China.
@@ElZilchoYoagain any weird regulation in China comes from a bloody tragedy. There was an overnight bus crashed into the wall at the entrance of a tunnel only 2 or 3 ppl survived out of 50+ ppl, everyone else died in that accident because of the driver was too tired. Since then all busses must rest between 2 and 5 am.
@@ElZilchoYo there was a super terriblr accident that reshaped the entire industry. long-haul buses are under heavy regulations.
How they both trying to be nice, then criticized about the local people is not right at all. Alan commented of the man snoring, saying he seems to be dying 🙄 You're in other countries not your own don't compare and complain

In fact, the sleeper bus is gradually disappearing in China.
The government of China has banned factories from producing new sleeper buses. Existing sleeper buses will naturally retire at the end of their life.

The snoring is hilarious! 😂😂😂
I miss my grandma. 😢 She used to snore like that and she was a 180 lbs fair lady.😂
The overnight buses are being phased out due largely to safety concerns and being replaced by high-speed trains.
May be an incentive for them not to make it overly comfortable.

You guys always pick up the hardest trip in China we can find in whole CZcams. 😂 ❤
The always end up being the best stories 😂
Hats off to both of you for trying this. The overnight bus is famous for its bad experience, and I had never had it as Chinese. Respect the courage.
Long-distance buses are not allowed to run from 2 to 5 o'clock at night, except for long-distance passenger vehicles used for connection. According to Article 38 of the Code for Safety Management of Road Passenger Transport Enterprises, passenger transport enterprises shall strictly abide by the provisions on driving time and rest time of passenger transport drivers when formulating transport plans: long-distance passenger transport vehicles shall stop running or implement connecting transport from 2 am to 5 am; Passenger vehicles engaged in fixed-line airports, high-speed rail express lines and short-distance barges with a one-way operating mileage of less than 100 kilometers are not subject to traffic restrictions from 2 am to 5 am on the premise of ensuring safety.
OMG you guys are amazing ,no wonder you dare to take an overnight bus in china, because i ensure you it’s definitely much better than India’s.
Wow! The journey suddenly pulled me back to China in the 90’s, I miss it so much! ❤
you guys are real travelers. respect!
🫡❤️
I admire your courage to try this backward way of transportation which was popular in China in 1990's and now is replaced by high speed trains. When u come back, u can try China-Lao railway, which was built by Chinese a couple years ago.
We took it from the Laos side of the border!
@@alanshannon3884 u can actually take it from Kunming all the way to Lao's capital. But maybe u just wanted to try sth different😂
Some rules for the long distance bus drivers here:
1. 2-5 am, not allowed to drive
2. Max continuous driving time: 4 hours during the day, 2 hours at night. At most 8 hours in total for 24 hours, 44 hours in a week.
3. Every stop must be longer than 20 mins
4. Snoring is ok. :)
These all for avoiding drowsy driving but definitely improved a lot of price. Safety always comes first here in China.
I had an experience that someone quarrelled for about an hour at night on a greyhound from NYC to somewhere.😂
I fully understand why China has this rule
We were in a bus crash in Bangladesh during the night

Great blog as always guys safe travels could you not buy some mini fans hand held ? Stay safe you’re both awesome 👏 when you get back come to London I’ll show you about 😊😊
your experiences actually are heavily related to one particularly deadly accident. at midnight 08/26/2012, an accident involving a sleeper bus killed 36 of 39 onboard. many were unable to escape due to poor safety of this kind of buses. this accident shocked the entire nation so the governmment later decided to stop producing new sleeper buses.
also, regulations then requires all overnight buses to stop from 2am to 5am to prevent fatigue, and installs gps stuff on comertial buses to ensure that. drivers are not allowed to drive continously for too long, and they clock-in their rotations using some cards which explains why the bus stopped every 2hrs or so.
basically this is why people talk you out of these buses, they are notoriously unsafe.
That is a very good Idea 2-5 am driving can be quite difficult to stay awake, nature and that sleep thing we do.
I agree Peace is the most important.@@user-nd8bo8nj7p

Horrific🤣🤣🤣
Ear plugs are a necessity sharing sleeping space with others.
used to have box with spare with me when traveling and if someone started to make a fuss in hostel or other place just gave them a pair. if someone snores and it keeps you awake the only person to blame is yourself for not being able to sleep while there is noise.
Can't wait for watching your guys' more experiences

Even the majority of Chinese won't take these kinds of overnight buses now 😂
China has 180,000 kilometers of highways, twice as many as the United States. China's highways are of a very high grade, not the shabby highways of the United States . If the journey is about two or three hundred kilometers, it is a better choice to take the highway by bus. But if the journey is more than 300 kilometers and less than 800 kilometers, it is better to take high-speed rail. If the journey is more than 800 kilometers, then the plane is the best choice.
According to Chinese law, It's mandatory to stop the long-haul bus at midnight to have a rest from 2-5am, and every 2 hours drive in the night time must take a rest at the service area for at least 20 minutes, and every 4 hours drive in the daytime must take a rest at the service area for 20 minutes; There's alarm system device mounted in the long-haul bus that the driver must click the button once every certain minutes(not sure how many exact minutes) otherwise the alarm will put on and report it the bus company and traffic police station so that the can immediately call the bus to check everything is normal. The punishment for breaking these traffic rules for drivers and bus company are actually very severe. Back to 10-15 years ago, the long-haul buses were popular (these days it's extremely rare ppl take it), there was lots of bus accidents and lots of ppl were injured and lost their lives, so that's why the traffice laws regulate long-haul buses are very strict and the drivers have to stop the bus to take a break. Honestly I didn't take long-haul buses for almost 12 years, and I don't recommend you guys to take it, it's better take a train/highspeed train or plane. The experice of taking a sleeper bus or train usually ended up with noisy snoring passengers, haha, that's why I don't like it.
travel is for experiences, and you are doing just fine! years from now, this little episode will bring you smiles!
Lamo😂 I’ve experienced this similar thing before in the US and was very amazed that people can snore that loud.
During my youth as a junior engineer who travelled a lot under tight budget I could sleep under the couch of a train. But I never could make it through overnight bus. The smell and the snoring were just simply horrific. Because of it's notorious safety record it has been banned in many province s. It's a thing of the past. You guys should always take train or daytime bus.
As a Chinese this is the first time I know that there’re sleeper buses in China 😮, I know there’re sleeper trains, eye opening 😊
You guys are very brave.
Haha I could not stop laughing when you guys found out the snoring guy was the bus driver hahaha 🤣
Now in China, the bus restriction is from 2am to 5am, for driver's sleep to passenger's save.

China's cross-border buses are mainly located on the Yunnan border. These so-called VIP buses are actually very simple cars purchased for cost considerations. There are real luxury buses in Japan, which are also a real VIP experience, but the prices are very high!
