  • Despite numerous warnings not to, we took a sleeper bus in China.
We have experienced high speed trains, regular trains, buses and now sleeper busses.
We travel from Kunming in Yunnan, and head down towards Mohan, near the Loas border which we will then attempt to cross.

Long-distance buses must rest at service areas from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., as required by regulations, to prevent safety hazards while driving at night. This regulation has been implemented in China for many years.

Some rules for the long distance bus drivers here:
    1. 2-5 am, not allowed to drive
    2. Max continuous driving time: 4 hours during the day, 2 hours at night. At most 8 hours in total for 24 hours, 44 hours in a week.
    3. Every stop must be longer than 20 mins
    4. Snoring is ok. :)
These all for avoiding drowsy driving but definitely improved a lot of price. Safety always comes first here in China.

your experiences actually are heavily related to one particularly deadly accident. at midnight 08/26/2012, an accident involving a sleeper bus killed 36 of 39 onboard. many were unable to escape due to poor safety of this kind of buses. this accident shocked the entire nation so the governmment later decided to stop producing new sleeper buses.
also, regulations then requires all overnight buses to stop from 2am to 5am to prevent fatigue, and installs gps stuff on comertial buses to ensure that. drivers are not allowed to drive continously for too long, and they clock-in their rotations using some cards which explains why the bus stopped every 2hrs or so.
basically this is why people talk you out of these buses, they are notoriously unsafe.

If the journey is about two or three hundred kilometers, it is a better choice to take the highway by bus. But if the journey is more than 300 kilometers and less than 800 kilometers, it is better to take high-speed rail. If the journey is more than 800 kilometers, then the plane is the best choice.

According to Chinese law, It's mandatory to stop the long-haul bus at midnight to have a rest from 2-5am, and every 2 hours drive in the night time must take a rest at the service area for at least 20 minutes, and every 4 hours drive in the daytime must take a rest at the service area for 20 minutes; There's alarm system device mounted in the long-haul bus that the driver must click the button once every certain minutes(not sure how many exact minutes) otherwise the alarm will put on and report it the bus company and traffic police station so that the can immediately call the bus to check everything is normal. The punishment for breaking these traffic rules for drivers and bus company are actually very severe. Back to 10-15 years ago, the long-haul buses were popular (these days it's extremely rare ppl take it), there was lots of bus accidents and lots of ppl were injured and lost their lives, so that's why the traffice laws regulate long-haul buses are very strict and the drivers have to stop the bus to take a break. Honestly I didn't take long-haul buses for almost 12 years, and I don't recommend you guys to take it, it's better take a train/highspeed train or plane. The experice of taking a sleeper bus or train usually ended up with noisy snoring passengers, haha, that's why I don't like it.

So brave of you. I took a similar bus in 2011 for 19 hours, and never want to take it again. Bad air condition, smoking on the bus and overload people sleeping on the narrow corridor. If I want to get off the bus for rest, I need to take care of not step on them.

I went on an overnight bus from Nanning to Chengdu back in 2007. There were two drivers on board so they took turns in driving.
Horrible experience travelling on bad roads covered in mud and potholes. Didn't get one minute of sleep in 18 hours

@@abbyabroadChina's slow trains provide soft bed tickets, which are first-class cabinet beds. They are very comfortable, but the price is more expensive than air tickets. If you are not busy traveling and have a phobia of airplanes, this slow train is a very enjoyable option. The slow train stops at many small stations, and you can buy a variety of local foods at each station, or jump off the train to stretch your arms and legs, or have a cigarette break before hopping back on the train.

Imagine if you had gotten a nice little old grandma there instead, that could have been a full 8 hour sleep and arriving fresh in Kunming.
