  • Witcher 3 Why Are The Crones So Scary? Why are the crones so scary? The witcher 3 has many enemies but the crones are some of the most memorable. Today I talk about what makes the crones so scary, including real world inspirations for the crones, the crones apperance and the witcher 3's setting and witcher 3's story.

      Wish they’d make the mod where you get the medallion back a true part of the game, along with the proper reasons of state quest (maybe a little changed to fit whatever they changed)

      Seriously! I don’t understand why if you get the best ending (Ciri becomes a witcher) you don’t get a cutscene or mini final boss of them both going back and slaughtering the last crone together to take back Vesemir’s medallion.

      @@DSBJR22 It's my head cannon it's on Geralt's bucket list. But also, it could be said that it's a metaphor for letting go of the past. For moving on without any reminders of it.
      I cried when Vesemir died, believe me, and I was in a terrible mood for the rest of the day. Today I killed Imelrith. What's next? I don't know, this is my first playthrough. But I feel great for avenging him.

    After fighting them as Ciri i personally felt like they didn't really die, any of them, just their physical form. There's so much we don't know about them which makes every interaction with them uncertain

    I think the Reason the Crones are So Creepy and Scary for me is that they constantly Challenge Geralts mind and his Depiction of the people he cares about (Ciri), They creep me out cuz they know he to push the Right Buttons to manipulate Anger, Sadness or Grief, Plus the Music
    Anyway love ur Vids Gerorge keep up the good work

    The thing about the Crones is that they’re, as you pointed out, in the category with Gaunter O’Dimm. They’re these physical, yet also non-physical entities that disturbs the player on an emotional and spiritual level. As a devout Christian I get the same sort of gut feeling from the Crones and Gaunter that I feel if I stumbled into someplace that I know deep in my core I need to leave immediately. That feeling inside of actually feeling a spiritual evil around you. They’re not like the Wild Hunt, or vampires and monsters who’re just beings from an different sphere and can be dealt with summarily by a sword. It doesn’t feel like you can kill them wholly. It feels like you only deal with them until sometime later, or that they’ll be someone else’s problem in the near or far future.
    It honestly speaks volumes as to the writing and ability of CDPR to make a trio that are disturbing to such a level that people can actually feel the evil emanating off of them.

      As I was about to comment here, as a Christian myself... The Crones and O'Dimm seem like Satan's right-hand man or just demons straight out of hell, you as a mere mortal or Witcher cannot defeat them, only God can truly destroy them or send them away. I'm guessing the eternal fire is supposed to represent the almost crusade period of Christianity?

    • @AlastorAltruistGaming
      @AlastorAltruistGaming Před 11 měsíci

      @@Andrewbaysura1and you would technically be right about the Eternal Fire on a metaphorical level. The Eternal Fire can be summed up by the persecution of “sinners” throughout history. Instead of letting God handle sinners Himself, the Church in human history took power into their own hands, and one way they did it was burning sinners at the stake. Anyone perceived as witches, homosexuals, adulterers, non- and un-believers, if there was any sin in them, whether they liked it or not, were all burned by fire for the sake of cleansing sin. I’m a Christian myself & even I find that very concerning, and it pains me that the Church forgot it was God’s duty to handle sinners in His own way. But that being said, such is the case with the Church of the Eternal Fire & how they’ve handled mages. They targeted sorcerers/sorceresses, dopplers, succubi, alchemists, and eventually, they started targeting non-humans, such as dwarves & elves (yet Zoltan is still alive, for some reason?) to protect the Eternal Fire’s (allegedly) good name & cleanse the world of sorcery. The Eternal Fire & its devoted followers are perfect representations of judgmental Christians & how they’ve killed in God’s name.

    In the Crones and the Whispering Hillock quests we try to determine who is less evil. The best indicator I've found is that when the Whispering Hillock's voice changes a bit you can hear the voice of an evil human witch. But when the Crones' voices change a bit you can hear them turning demonic. The Crones are, without a doubt, some of the creepiest Witcher creatures.

    It also helps how, as the plot is leading you toward them, the hints and stories you hear about them become more and more ominous.
    At first they're just mentioned as "witches". But we deal with those every day! "Oh, she's with some witches? Okay, I'll just go pick her up."
    But by the time you're getting close to them, the stories have built them up to where you know to be expecting something Evil-Goddess-level (but you still don't know what...)

    Shakespeare took his inspiration for his three witches in MacBeth from the ancient Greeks. Their myth of the Stygian witches is thousands of years old, repeatedly cropping up in several classic tales: three sisters with one eye between them, which they actually hand around and share. They were rather well depicted in the film, Clash Of The Titans (the remake) even if that movie wasn’t sticking too closely to the original stories throughout.

    You missed the most important factor. The sound. From thier rough echoing speech to the way the music slows and deepens. Just after the ps5 update I did a play through where the back ground music cut out on all the cinematic scenes and it really softened the impact. The sound, creepy location, disturbing appearance, and jerky inhuman movements all work to making them a 10 on the nope scale.

    so... Is Gaunter O'dimm supposed to be the Devil or Satan in the Witcher universe? Also I see a noose around one of the crone's neck, so they are definitely dead, possibly given a second chance at life without the living part, cursed but given immense almost godlike power?

  • @wafflingmean4477
    @wafflingmean4477 Před rokem

    The crones seem very scary to me because they seem ancient. They have a certain presence to them, and they know things they shouldn't, like the taste of Elder Blood. And Geralt doesn't immediately go "aright enough is enough" when he can clearly tell how abusive they are to the people of Velen. He hesitates. He can tell there's something more here. He's not sure if he has the means to kill the Crones. It felt very similar to when in the books, Dandelion asks if Geralt could kill Regis if it came to it, and Geralt says he doesn't know and he's not willing to test that theory (unless forced to). It really made you respect the power of vampires in the Witcher world when Geralt is very clearly trying to avoid a fight with him when we already have a concept of how lethal Geralt is.
    Geralt only made a decisive mood against the Crones when it was clear Ciri was going to fight them regardless.

    For me the creepiest thing about them is that parents have and will willingly send their own children to their brutal deaths at the hands of these monsters. All while tricking the poor children by calling the path to the Crones "The Trail of Treats". If only they knew that they were the treat.

  • @cinematrollstippy4004

    The Three are awful for sure. However, when I first met them I was taken by the music, and as they were freaking me out, I felt some adrenalin pulse coming: the ambiant sensation, the music, their voices just put me in some battle excitement. Their only voices, speaking through a hair made tapissery, have something ominous.
    As they are controling Velen people destiny, I think that the Crones are also inspired from Nordic mythology were the three crones of Urd's well are, like in Greek mythology, representative of the passing time and also controling fate.
