- A video describing how to change and use gears on a motorcycle. Suitable to help students at any stage of training. Some demonstrations are of riding beyond CBT or test standard, and are shown for illustration and understanding for future development only.
If in doubt always consult a qualified instructor. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Really helpful video, covering every mistake I made in my CBT!
I did my CBT on an automatic moped (have a full manual car licence but struggled to get a hold of it, thought that learning how to ride a motorbike and gear changes would overwhelm me!) but this video makes it look much less scary! After getting used to mopeds now I'm pretty tempted to get a full bike licence, love these videos 😊
thank you. i wish you well with your future training and bikes
been looking for a very detailed video and this is the best
Thanks for the video, very informative!😀
Really good lesson. You suggested I watch this after I left a question in the comments section of another of your videos. I'm very glad I did. Thanks again for the excellent content.
@scrumpymanjack thanks for watching, Im glad it was useful for you. Ride safe, all the best
Thanks 😊for the very interesting and informative video
Regards
My sincere apologies on my previous comment, it was meant to go on a video I watched prior to yours, dooooh! As you will have seen I’ve now deleted it. Keep up the great work, as I’ve said previously beginners and more experienced can learn so much from your videos, sadly unlike some other would be instructors on CZcams. 👍
Ah thank you for your updated comments, no problem at all.
Thanks for watching, made me analyse my old ride 🤣
All the best, ride safe
Brilliantly and simply explained
thank you Duncan
Thank you!
Thank you...👍
I was that new bike rider the other day. Kicking the gear lever as it wouldn't go into gear at a junction 😂
Thank you
I block change down through the gears but have seen other videos where it’s not recommended? Thanks for the videos 👍
@Seton, yes some people dont recommend it, its not a problem unless you choose a gear thats too low for the road speed and suddenly let the clutch out. Then its definitely a problem! Ride safe
26:52 when your kung fu instructor shows you how its done! Great vid extremely helpful 👍
Good lesson and info. When you change from 1st gear to 2nd gear, do you bypass Neutral or do you stop at Neutral then click again to 2nd gear?
Thank you, you just shift firmly up into second past neutral. If you are too gentle you may select neutral. Same for second to first
Hello thanks for this video
I kindly request for a video on gear changing on a steep hill. Thanks alot.
Thank you for your question and suggestion.
Can i ask if you are having issues with this, i may be able to solve them with a quick answer.
Hi there, this is very useful, thank you so much for this video. I passed my CBT last year April and I haven’t ridden a bit since then (1 year now). Bought a bike recently and I am a bit nervous about riding. What would you recommend? Thanks
Hi thanks for your comments.
If you haven't ridden for a year it would be good to contact your local training school for a 2 hour refresher. If not possible then go on a quiet road and practice to see how much comes back to you. If you struggle or are unsafe, consider redoing the CBT if schools are not able to offer refresher training. Im not sure of your previous road experience or abilities but staying safe is number 1.
Hope this helps, all the best
Some useful info & tips. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!

Trying my best to ride to OSMPSL but after decades of roadcraft I have found myself, (with instructor), occasionally reverting to IPSGA & doing block changes, (smoother & more disciplined at slower urban speeds).
Mindful I am paying my local to me instructor & not you !
I told my instructor I found myself block changing occasionally, (he had not prior commented on this), He simply said "Don't do it", however, its a hard habit to break).
Can you confirm I should not be marked down on test if I happen to be seen by examiner correctly performing a block change, (assuming bike under control, in appropriate gear for junction or other hazard etc) ?
Take my question hypothetically if you wish....To avoid causing annoyance &/or student/instructor I am not going to share my further thoughts or any dialogue here with my current instructor.
@@AW8UK if your gear changes are safe and appropriate and the machine is under control then there is no issue.
If ipsga is deeply rooted then dont fight it for osmpsl as a late change of system may cause more problems than it solves. Just remember as part of information phase (give) you need to consider your signal cancellation more strongly!
All the best

Superb Phil...That really is a great reassurance.
All noted & taken on board.
Off my own back I have (yesterday) done a fairly extensive recce of the test area including roundabouts & limits.
Avoiding a badly timed/located stall or signal left on now my main 2 areas of focus. ......I have been doing commentary drives with rear mirror dipped and focusing on verbalised signal cancellation. I will also ensure we practice moving off (taught once) & hill starts. (Don't get me wrong...I am not constantly stalling or leaving signals on !).
31 years of roadcraft.. 1st started on the old blue book system.
I can't thank you enough for your continual support....Your videos explanations demo's & comments have been superb & genuinely useful.
Will update in due course.🙂
@@MotorcyclePWR Hi PWR 1st Mod 2 failed (GENUINELY far from straight forward). Not appropriate to fully discuss here. (I have messaged by other means)..Regards AW8
Great video as ever. Thanks. I have a question. At 10:55 you are turning right, haven't come to a stop bu bet go into 1st. The same is true at 23:22 at the roundabout what you dint actually come to a stop but use first. I find that learning as I am on a 650cc, going into 1st in this scenario gives me too much engine braking and my throttle then gets a bit jumpy making my turn a bit lumpy. Is second gear an acceptable option here? Thanks again
@philcaffrey hi Phil, yes either is an option. Depends on your speed and your bike. If you are down to walking pace clutch slip is an option, for smoothness in 1st and to reduce the risk of stalling in 2nd. I will usually go for 2nd once I set off onto the roundabout before I start to corner if I can. So yes, 2nd is an option, but be careful not to go too slow in 2nd without using clutch control, as the risk is that if the speed is low, revs are low and clutch comes out too quickly there is chance of stalling, which you dont want half way across a roundabout. I hope this helps, all the best
@@MotorcyclePWR That is really helpful. Your videos and the detail of your commentary and responses to questions are hugely helpful - thank you so much as always. Brilliant!
Thanks
Thank you very much for your donation, i really appreciate it. Glad the videos have been of use. All the best
I’m a bit confused about the engine braking when changing gears and closing the throttle when letting clutch out, could you explain that part please
@SyNcOps sorry for late reply, i missed the comment. Would you still like clarification? All the best
The motorcycle in the shot looks like a black and white tuxedo cat
I am doing my IBT next month direct access my bike is a Bandit 1250 abs , at 6 4 and 58 years of age should u look at downsizing ??
I think its worth seeing how your riding is after your course and then decide if the 1250 is for you.
Maybe with extra training with a suitable instructor the bike will be fine for you, but if it really hinders your confidence building then reassess the bike that feels good for you. All the best
@@MotorcyclePWR Thank you , sitting in it getting used to the weight , move into different positions forward and backwards to get used to manual handling of the machine before my ibt ,is a bonus and getting familiar with the controls and maintenance as most of it will be done by myself.
Please can the ads stop every 5mins!! It's so annoying!!!
i will look at the placement, sorry
@@MotorcyclePWR it's fine.
