Thomas Edison Inventions He Didn't Actually Invent

- Thomas Edison was one of the greatest inventors of all time - or was he? Most people think Edison was the inventor of the light bulb, but that doesn't seem to be the case, which begs the question, "Who truly invented the light bulb?" There is a lot of contention over famous stolen inventions, and unfortunately it's impossible to not bring up Edison when it comes to the subject.

When I was in high school, my physics teacher said: if you write "Edison is thief" on your exam you will pass.. so I did, many times :) I respect that man till the day I die.. :)
I respect your teacher too!
We found the Serb
Nope, actually you found a guy from Croatia 🤣🤣🤣
I always wished my history book said that. Edison was not only a thief but quick to filing patents.
Actually your Physics teacher should have been fired for unprofessionalism. Teachers are not allowed to use their position to influence students ideologically or politically.
Finally someone who gives credit to Volta

When I was in school in the 1950s and 60s, we of course were taught that Thomas Edison was a great hero. My father, born in 1925, was named Thomas after Thomas Edison, and my middle name became Thomas for the same reason. I have a complete set of the 1942 Encyclopedia Britannica, and in it, they gush like fanatics about how great he was. As a long time historian, I learned fairly early that what I'd been taught about him was oh so wrong. That led me to dive deeply into many historical "facts" to root out the truths. To me, Edison is near the top of the scum heap, but Christopher Columbus tops it.
what is your age ?

Edison was a hero. You're using his D.C. electricity invention right now on your digital device - ironically which makes you look like a moron when complaining about him.
@@getajob3435 -- I'm 74.
The more I learn about Edison the more I realize he was a terrible person. He did everything he could to ruin Nichola Tesla because of jealousy. These acts depicted here just seal the deal

Edison's family will not like this video. There is a stipulation from his family that if they officially cooperate on a documentary for Edison, Nikola Tesla cannot be mentioned at all.
Ugh.
Small people.
That's total b.s. Do you know how many hundreds of books, documentaries, and films mention both of them?
@@chrisdale3087 Those are WITHOUT the Edison's family involvement.
@@ejd1984 It doesn't matter whether his descending family members are involved or not. There is no family member alive right now who even was a witness to that time in history, and no family member with equal knowledge of electricity workings or legalities of invention, and therefore no one of any worth or credibility. That's why hundreds of books, documentaries, and films that mention both Edison and Tesla of them have been made.
Eadweard Muybridge wasn't interested in creating moving pictures. He simply wanted to prove that all four of a horse's legs leave the ground in gallop.
I have horses and it's really obvious without a movie of it 😂

Yay facts
Edison was most definitely not an inventor. He was a self promoting businessman, and very good at it! The light bulb we all know today was done by Swan over 20 years before Edison blatantly copied it.
Edison WAS the inventor because he used a filament that didn't burn out after a few seconds to a few a minutes. Adolphe Chaillet's handmade bulb (built while working for Edison's
General Electric Company is still burning right this minute.) You also don't know what a legal inventor is. The inventor isn't the person that comes up with an idea - it's the person that builds a physical working model and makes it work continually and is granted a legal patent for it. Joseph Swann had a similar working bulb but did not have a longer lasting bulb than Edison.
Edison’s that one kid in science class who sits behind the smart kid and always copies off of them 🤦🏻♀️💀
Perhaps it's American history books that attribute everything to Edison. Id never heard him credited with most of these.
I am American and the light bulb is one of the only things I knew about him. We did not spend much time discussing him when I attended school.

But, but, but . . . we ended up using Tesla's alternating current. So I don't understand that last bit.
Exactly! Definitely a big mistake there.
If you haven't done this already, how about the question of who invented radio? It's a similar kind of story... But I'd heard years ago that Edison was a credit hog.
Look for Roberto Landell de Moura. He was already trainsmitting voice while Marconni was sending just morse code.
Tesla invented radio but didn't file a patent for it because he didn't devise one for home entertainment.

The battery was actually invented way before both of those people. There was an ancient discovery of an enclosed cell with different natural acids and natural materials in which were similar in chemical properties to earlier batteries.
Even if the object properties were similar to a battery, it was not designed to be one and never been used as one. So no, nobody invented batteries before Volta
The Baghdad battery look it up
Almost everything was created simultaneously by different people at the same time. That's how inventions have historically worked. This video is just trying to jump on the present trend of trying to talk bad about Edison because it's edgy. People need to dispel themselves of the myth that the lone Wolf inventor come up with a brand new concept and perfect, and it completely on their own. That just isn't health things normally work.
@@alexcholagh8330 the bagdad battery is a clay pot, a rod of iron, and a tube of copper it was discovered in what is todays iraq. nobody really knows what it was really used for, so in a sense it is a myth that people back then used electricity.
@@TheGwimWeaper we can discover more if iraq wasn't a filthy Islamic military backed dictatorship and plagued with corruption. The Baghdad battery might have been used for plating or science or torture device possibly if it did produce any electricity by very small bolts.
Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. - Thomas Edison
I remember my middle school teacher kicked me out of class for tell her Thomas Edition didn’t invented most of what our school book claimed. My father told me he read how he stole most of his ideas
Your middle school teacher was right. You used Edison's D.C. electricity in your digital device to make your comment above.
What’s happening? Is the original voice guy taking a break?
He's obviously not the main voice anymore. Expect it to stay the way it is now.

"History books tell us Edison was one of the greatest inventors of all time." Yeah American history books. The rest of the world thinks of him more as patent thief he really was.
Edison was like someone from today going back in time to gain fame and money by "inventing" shizz from his time, while not knowing that the shizz already exists.
Mr garrison ah narrator
Oh jesus, jesus christ!
Thomas Edison, the guy everyone tries to avoid in group projects 😁
A+ video!
Very interesting getting a different perspective of the ownership of the inventions!
Edison and Morgan are the reason why we don't have wireless electricity today (Tesla). Imagine where we could be without relying upon batteries and a wire (fuel) for all devices- including vehicles and homes
Just Morgan is to blame for that, not Edison. If everyone pulled their money out of J.P. Morgan / Chase bank in revenge, the world would be a better place.
Remember kids... everything you love is a lie, and all our heroes are monsters!

Kinda true... xD
Musicians and Hollywood Actors be like : 👀💧
Don’t you make them your hero’s though
How come in the public schools or even private schools, they credit Edison with the invention of the light bulb 💡?
Edison was better at promoting himself and he got away with it
Because his company’s light bulb was affordable and could be mass produced. Light bulbs prior to this would burn out to quickly.
His company got it patented
Because he was the inventor - he got it to last long and devised it for the home. No one else did that. The inventor isn't the person that comes up with an idea - it's the person that builds a physical working model that works continuously and is granted a legal patent for it.
For five years no I want you guys to make a video about the war of the currents between Edison, George Westinghouse and Tesla. Close here, but not there yet :D
My favorite eugenics master
It seems Edison is the muggle equivalent of Gilderoy Lockhart....🤣🤣🤣
That electric pen was turned into invention of the modern day tattoo gun
Thomas Edison improved the inventions. If it wasn't for him, it wouldn't be where we're at. It's no different than any other invention over the years improved it doesn't mean that they "stole it". For example, the guy from Japan invented the blue LED. Yes, he didn't invent the LED, but he didn't stole the technology he improved it, invented the blue LED. "Edison stole invention" is misleading.
Now do a video about Tesla
Seach for: "Weird History Nikola Tesla Facts That May Shock You".
There can only be one Narrator… You are NOT him!
Narrator! Bravo! Excellent reading & tone! Great pep and exciment with the material. Your doing great!
The Edison was a hack thing is a really tired meme at this point and shows a lack of understanding of how business and invention works. No. Edison did not singlehanded invent everything that you thought he did in second grade. What made Edison successful was his ability to take already created ideas and make them affordable/more efficient. Yeah. He didn’t invite the light bulb. But his company made it so that the light bulb was actually practical. I’m all for knocking him down a peg and giving proper credit to his employees. But it’s swung so far the other direction that people just as misinformed just in the opposite direction.
Exactly! There's a huge difference in something working in theory and being 95% there and a working product that's useful to the public. People don't get you can be a genius AND an asshole! We need both!
I've loathed Edison since middle school. 30 years later...I'm happy this vid exists.
Better stop using your cellphone then. It uses Edison's D.C. electricity (stepped down) to run it.
Did not have Mr Swaim narrating weird history on my bingo card.
Please don't tell me the original Mr. Narrator is gone.
They seem to of weaned him out. Less and less of him until. ...that may have been the last we ever hear from him again.
😅😅😂
most of the things he is credited for inventing he stole from his young brilliant employee NIKOLA TESLA !
That didn’t actually happen. Tesla wrote in his journal regularly and never mentioned anything about Edison stealing from him until decades later. At which point a lot of historians believe Tesla had dementia. This is why context matters.
So I guess I have Edison to thank for my tattoos! His electric pen is nothing but a tattoo gun
As long as he didn't steal any ideas from my cousin, Dr. Edwin H. Land, who's best known for inventing the Polaroid camera and polarized lenses.
The reason many people say he "stole" inventions is because he improved on many already existing ideas and got them to actually work/work well. It's definitely not as simple as "Oh, you invented this? I invented this" like some people think
The other people were dabblers in many cases and not serious about their work.

I know its hard to follow, and can't comment that without people calling you a "baby" lol.
So Edison never invented the 6 legged chair or the self hammering hammer?
Sad that he got credit over Homer
None of this comes as a surprise, given exactly how narcissistic Edison was.
*Starts video, hear this guy's voice, leaves*
A hundred and so years later, he was reincarnated in Elon Musk, but even worse.
By this standard hardly any invention would qualify for anyone, nothing exists in a vacuum.
Please do one on the original inventor of the telephone who was ripped off by bell

Might be easier to go over what inventions he actually invented.
Perhaps Australia's answer to Edison could be next.....Henry Sutton
I thought Pierre and Marie Curie were the first to discover X-rays? I know they discovered radium and polonium, the latter named after Marie/Maria’s native Poland. Also, Edison would be horrified to know that his “electric pen” was later adopted for another, more fun purpose: tattoos. Yup, that electric apparently went through a few redesigns until it became the tattooing implement we know and love today (unless you’re a needlephobe like me 😂).
At 0:34 is that a photo of Bruce Lee in the far right corner? If so, please do a story about him!

"Arguably" is a meaningless modifier...it means no one agrees
As a regular watcher of weird history, I've become just as attached to the narrators as the subject matter. I feel like they should get more credit in the videos, as they are all great but distinctly different from one another

Thomas Edison was also the World's 1st Movie Pirate having stolen A Trip to the Moon, created by Georges Méliès. Then retitling it and disturbing in the USA eventually Georges Méliès studio closed because of Edison.
Not true. A Trip to the Moon, created by Georges Méliès was distributed in the USA and Edison translated it.
Didn't most inventors steal others ideas and pass it off as their own work?
that's an unprovable statement
@@LilFeralGangrel alexander graham bell one name springs to mind
Taking an existing idea or invention and improving on it is not stealing. And it's perfectly legal. He just didn't bother to credit the others who worked on them. Many, many inventions have been done that way, the Singer sewing machine being one. singer didn't invent it, and he stole the original idea, but he did improve it allowing him to claim the idea. Though to be honest the original inventor it finally got a lawsuit settled about it.
Skip because different voice
This guy isn’t the narrator …
what about the 6 legged chair?
homer invented it and left it at the edison museum
The last statement was false - Edison didn't win the electrical market in the US, Tesla/Westinghouse did. We operate on alternating current. Edison did win to make power companies in the US Northeast, with the name "Edison" still in several of those companies today, even though they had to abandon the Edison electrical system for the Westinghouse one.
Bob's Burger taught me Edison was shady
I learned that he supposedly stole patens from others on that show Mysteries At The Museum.
This take on Edison makes him akin to the Apple of inventors-while he may not have been first to come up with something, he waited in the wings with his own “perfection” of others’ ideas to popularize the invention and make it his own.
The new narrator is improving. The enthusiasm is more prominent than prior vids.
You really can argue that's most of them. He may have come up with the general idea, but he let his peons do the actual creation, and then Edison took full credit for them.
Edison may not have wanted to create anything that would kill, but he sure killed a lot of animals , including an African Elephant, trying to make a point; telling people, "This is what will happen with Tesla's AC/DC electricity!" Then he flipped the switch and the animal died...........
