    be careful spreading fertilizer around your pond, not only do bass and other native fish not tolerate salts and nutrients well, but as you increase nutrient levels in the pond you'll risk algae blooms (nasty and sometimes toxic) and uncontrollable weeds!

    • @FreEntity
      @FreEntity Před 2 lety +21

      I even thought that when the fertilizer enters the water, bacteria will attack it & take the oxygen out of the water doing so.

    • @garrettp377
      @garrettp377 Před 2 lety +25

      @@FreEntity that too! It's less the bacteria attacking the fertilizer itself, and more that the fertilizer increases algae growth, which shades the plants on the bottom, so they die and the microbes consume the oxygen as they break the organic material down. It's called eutrophication, and is what causes dead zones in the Mississippi river, gulf and other places that receive high levels of nutrients!

    • @lostpony4885
      @lostpony4885 Před 2 lety +3

      Good news is algae blooms arent instant so if one begins you can mitigate it, maybe add a bunch of agitation with a couple of big fountain sprayers and that should keep the oxygen up while you get some water replaced to drop the nitrogen.

      Instead of just random poles, what would be other ideal perching installations that could be added around the pond? I was thinking light poles around the perimeter of the lake that would demarcate the lake visually in the night shots, but that could be costly and might not allow the owls to hide as easily. They might not perch on them either, but was thinking of other useful installations that would have multi-purpose than just random poles. I like the bat house idea as well.

    If mowing the backside of the pond bank is still an issue. I recommend turning it into a butterfly garden/pollinator haven by planting native perennials. It will benefit many other species of wildlife as well.
    It can be managed by burning once every year or two, no mowing needed!

    You should never really need fertilizer around a water. Simply spread a composte tea or top soil and that will add all the missing nutrients to your soil. Cause the nitrogen runoff will damage your pond.

    "owl capone" is a female, and "hooter" is a male. Like bass, the female owl is bigger than the male. You can DRAMATICALLY increase how many rats and mice and other rodenty critters they are able to catch by giving them tall poles or other perches to sit on and hunt from, and this can also help out the hawks on your farm who will be the day crew on rodent patrol.

      YES! There are communities which spent many thousands of dollars with traps and poisons to try to eradicate high rodent populations but failed miserably, and instead when they switched to encouraging predators like owls, snakes, and foxes, THAT ended up being what worked. This has happened in more controlled studies around areas of Missouri and notably the town of Apopka, FL.

    I’ve been following this pond build series since right after you started the build and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t wait until you stock it and eventually start catching monster bass. My grandpa had 3 bulldozer and he built the pond on our land and he built ponds for many others in our area. I ran one of his dozers but mine had a cutting blade on it. We cleared the land behind loggers for a local paper mill in Western Kentucky so they could plant new trees.

    Hey there, I'm an American living in Thailand and I just found your channel and have enjoyed watching your development of your pond.
    I am in the process of buying just over 7 acres of rice fields and I'm going to build a half acre pond on it but I'm going 40 feet deep so it will give me water year round. We have a dry season that can be pretty severe but at the 40 foot level you have all the water you want.
    Instead of growing rice I'm going to use the dirt from the pond to terrace the property so I can grow vegetables.
    Anything I can grow that isn't rice because everyone grows rice and I will have an instant market for my crops. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing the rest of your videos.

    Always cut straight up and down the hills on the tractor, in low gear, never sideways. Also of course, don't turn around on a hillside angle. You could always leave it natural also, better for the wildlife. I wouldn't cut all the way down to the water's edge either, resist the urge. Create a buffer. Plants and vegetation around the water's edge protects wildlife and water purity. My 2 cents, Been there done that. Blueberries would be nice around there, plenty of sun.

It shouldn't be a problem with a bush hog. Just keep the tractor in 4 wheel drive and you shouldn't have any problem with the tractor loosing traction and sliding down the hill.

    Great job on the pond, it really looks great. I'm surprised you didn't put a breaching bass on the logo, also an owl in the tree might be a nice touch. Can't wait to se it all finished.

    Since it's a fishing pond, you should add fish into the logo - or even, make them a main piece - the tree is no longer there, so the logo could be wood / fish, but I guess it would be confusing for people looking for the tree and learning it's no longer there....

    Excellent I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos. They owls do enjoy sitting looking for prey. Maybe you could put the odd 6ft post in the ground here and there for the owls to perch on. They will love them and it will give you somewhere to look for their pellets too. John from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    When you mentioned Hooter being on the pole that you use for timelapses, I had a couple thoughts:
    1) Perhaps a small horizontal bar at the top (making a T) to help them perch more easily. It might be easier to timelapse as well (if you're using a wraparound leg like Gorillapods, etc.).
    2) When Hooter flew, the bar wiggled quite a bit. Your timelapses might get a bit shakey if it's windy. If you were able to stiffen that up, I think you'd have smoother timelapses.
    Love seeing all the critters. Would having some trees along the pond be feasible? It might add some shade for the fish and other wildlife might be apt to stop by (maybe the owls would nest there). Also, it seems to me (a complete non-expert) that the trees might help prevent bank runoff into the pond given you're always getting hit with storms.
    It's great seeing your pond come together! I always look forward to seeing your next video.

  • @ShadyOaksFarm

    I wouldn’t stock my pond with predator fish like bass until you have stocked it with your forage fish. Then wait one year before stocking predators. I know you are anxious but to have a great fishery it’s the only way. This way your forage will spawn the first year a give you 100,000 of bait fish. I have caught bass in mine that are not even 6 months old and weigh 4 lbs or more. Pigs with fins!!!

    The size difference in the owls could be age or sex. Generally in birds of prey, females are larger. Owls are usually solitary hunters. Make sure if you have pest control for the mice that it is eco friendly because if the owls eat a poisoned mouse, the owls will die. Owls are your best pest control.

    I'm kind of curious, why put Bonnie and Clyde in the pond if the intention of the pond is to fish? What if you keep catching them? I'd say, in my own opinion, keep them in the backyard pond since they are the stars of this entire operation. Maybe thats just me

      In Mexico you can't buy a hotdog not bacon wrapped and I've never even seen or heard of that in the US. From late afternoon till late night, there's a cart in the high traffic areas on every corner. They don't even ask, always inc. They're 30 pesos (1.50) just bumped them from a dollar. Can you tell I eat a lot? They come with mayo,mustard, ketchup, tomatoes and a lot of marinated, grilled onions and then a lot of 🔥 hot, flaming salsa that I pass on, most gringos do.

    For the lawnmower, golf courses use a hover mower. It basically floats when it's on and you can mow banks pretty easy. Buy 2 if you have a helper haha.
