Hey, I wanted to ask you a question, I have been in a situation before where the puck is in the corner and you are racing the offencman to get that puck, but you cant really take the route of angling ypurself along the bpards and then getting the puck, so when im racing with the offenceman, I take a quick look at him and usually he is right beside me. The only option left is to go at him and make body contact with him so he dowsnt come up behind you and ram you in the boards since u are going straight at them. I have done that a couple times before and it led me to getting the puck, but it isnt a very safe way to do so because you can get rubbed out by him and you will end up in the boards at the end. Is there a better way to take that puck in the corner while racing that offencman to get it? ( I play Minor Bantam, Big guy, 13 yrs old, AA, Defencman)
Thanks, I just wanted to know if there is a smarter and a more efficient way to get that puck.
I am racing the offencman, so we are both scating as fast as we can too, we both ussually make it there at the same time, but one ends up in the boards..

Keep in mind when you are going into the corner you want to take a good angle to the puck

It all depends on where the pressure is. If you take an angle to the puck and have a defender on you, you will get smoked. Sometimes you have to go direct with pressure and then use edge work to beat the defender. Every situation is different.

Thanks for participating in the comments, in some situations you are definitely correct, the angle is important.

that's how you end up getting hurt. Always go in on an angle. Then you might get "smoked" but bounce off the boards unhurt and most likely still come out with the puck. You should not be coaching if you are telling kids this stuff.

+Dave M Hey Dave, thanks for your comment buddy, unfortunately I just saw this so I couldn't respond earlier. Here is the problem with guy like you though, you've probably never played or coached at a high level so you have no clue what you're talking about.
What I'm teaching kids here is how to AVOID getting crushed into the boards. Going it at and ANGLE like you are talking about makes it easy for the defenseman to know exactly where you are going to get CRUSHED.
I'm sure you read that in someone manual and never actually tested that concept playing at a high level.
I'm teaching players how to look over their shoulder and be aware....what an original concept. Be aware of where you are on the ice and where the D is. Not just randomly go in at an angle because someone told you to do that.
Lastly, watch the guys in the NHL. They are great at initiating body contact and that is the #1 way to avoid getting smoked into the boards and getting hurt because you are not allowing the defenseman to get a solid hit on you. You are protecting yourself.
Next time you leave a comment make sure you know what you are talking about.
