“The sparkmage shrieked, calling on the rage of the storms of his youth. To his surprise, the sky responded with a fierce energy he’d never thought to see again.”
Wonderful flavor text, especially considering Bolt's history!
@@CanadianBaconPwnage yes, it actually was perfect. Bolt needs a standard reprint!
I'd love a nizzhon top 10 favorite flavor texts
I was not expecting One With Nothing to take the top spot!
It's number 0 obviously
Gosh I'm a dumbass....
This list is like the All-time Hall of Fame of Magic
"Okay so, top two gotta be Force of Will and Lightning bolt.
... right?"
I knew Ancestral Recall was bonkers, but I was expecting it to get bumped down due to format restrictions. I legit underestimated Brainstorm though.
If Pauper had real sanctioned play Brainstorm would be #1 I believe.
@@Rancher.Rancher It would hyper eclipse it.
Without seeing the list yet, I would say Brainstorm tops both probably.
Me too, way underestimated it
I had absolutely no idea Brainstorm would be that high either. I called Bolt, Plow, Recall, FoW and Dismember, though. :)
Did not expect dismember that high up
Phyrexian mana was that much of a mistake.
@@w47765 Lol, I saw his comment and was gonna reply "phyrexian mana was a mistake." 😂 Looks like you have beat me to it good sir. 👍
@@mrtekbunny beat me to the beat me comment
I'm surprised Dark Ritual didn't make it into this list.
This was instant-ly the best video I've seen.
This was instantly the worst comment
Wonder who many people interrupted their other viewing to watch this one?
* ba dum tss *
I figured Brainstorm would be #1, no way that Recall would be able to overcome the huge disadvantage of getting 0 points basically anywhere but Vintage. Guess not.
I mean it's probably in 6-8 top 8 decks in every vintage tournament since the format's inception. So I guess it actually makes sense?
Same.
To be fair, if you were playing Vintage, you'd put Ancestral Recall in all your decks.
It's hard to find a Vintage deck in the top 8 of ANY event that doesn't have Ancestral Recall.
@@brandonsheumaker2673 not really. Shops has been in the format since the beginning, and it doesn’t run it because it doesn’t run blue sources besides a one of academy, and dredge is a consistently one of the strongest decks in the format and it doesn’t run any power, so there will always be a few decks in the top eight every tournament, but for the most part yeah it’s in pretty much every deck
glad to see scores from pioneer!
What, were you afraid he would just exclude pioneer? :^)
@@cutecommie no, I just hadn't realized that there had been actual pioneer tournaments yet.
knowing ive watched every top 10 video, this list still blew me away, and never in my life could i have imagined nr 1. that is just insane, so many points from 1 format?
also pretty crazy to imagine, had you included negate, it wouldve made top 5.
honestly expected dark ritual to be on the list, really surprised about that.
thanks for the hard work on this list. excited about the creature list too! :)
Well it makes sense. Negate just has such a stupid amount of reprints that it has been standard legal so often for people to stick in their sideboards. There is some other cards with lots of reprints that have amassed a lot of points due to that as well.
Magic Arena had a temporary format with prebuilt decks. One of the decks had AR, the others did not. I played that deck 7 times, 5 of those times I cast AR. I won 5 games and lost 2 with that deck. Guess why.
BOLT THE BIRD!
So, Lightning Bolt, a multi-format defining card that helps determine how good a creature is on the vanilla scale, was beaten out by the blue card in that cycle? Ancenstral Recall can only be played in Vintage, wtf?! Granted, I understand it's the second most powerful card in the game (if not the first), at least by some accounts, but damn. Hell, it even beat out Brainstorm, which was stapled onto Jace, the Mind Sculptor, which, combined with opponent fate sealing, made him the most OP Planeswalker ever. My mind is absolutely blown. First time it's happened to me on these top 10s. Just goes to show how powerful instants, and by extension supercharged instants, are.
JTMS isn't the most broken Planeswalker ever anymore, Oko has him beat.
most broken planeswalker until an elk fondler showed up
@@pphyjynx8217 and Mattman324 How so? I can see an argument for Jace but not Oko. They're both insanely powerful and truly broken, but there's no way Oko has JTMS beat tbh.
@@Eric_The_Cleric I mean, the fact that Jace remains legal in Modern but Oko didn't is a point towards Oko being more broko
Eric Hillmeyer Someone beat down their opponent with a 3/3 Elk Black lotus from Oko. Can JTMS do that? Points for Oko being more broko.
Next set, Wotc is gonna release a new version of Sword to plowshare but if it’s used on any spell that isn’t white, the opponent can draw 2 cards
Nah man, White can't have card advantage, even if it's giving it to your opponent. It will be Swords to Nukes: Exile target creature, that creature's controller wins the game.
Please God no. Baby Narset was a mistake I don't want her becoming popular again outside of Fires decks cause control gets a premium removal spell.
Narset is a mistake in general.
Stupid Enlightened Master...
@@faerie7dragon I smell an EDH player.
@@Ceracio Correct, all Narset cards are a pain in the ass in EDH.
It made me wonder what the top 10 sideboard cards have been...
I'm actually very surprised that Counterspell wasn't in the top 10. It's been around a heckuva lot longer than Mana Leak.
I think Counterspell doesn't make it on by the fact that it asks for 2 blue to counter a spell. Where with mana leak, it can be put in Blue/X shells. Counterspell is mostly better for pure blue control decks.
One of my favorite top tens! Great work👍🏻
Thanks!
Blew my mind. I was expecting Bolt to be number out of sheer number of reprints and formats it's been legal in. But I guess showing up in most decks at literally every vintage tournament ever is hard to overcome.
Love ur content...love the logic...which is very short these days...even love your voice...keep it up...b well..and may u never face mana troubles in a match of MTG
Interesting to see two big and infamously overpowered mechanics on the list; delve and phyrexian mana
Delve depends on the format but Phyrexian mana is broken everywhere.
The mad man actually did it.
Abrubt Decay may not be able to be countered, but it can be a Spell Queller target! Love exiling that card and having them call the Judge to rules check
Mana Leak is going to function just like Counterspell most of the time.
Yup
That's why there are so many strictly worse versions (that still see play), most recently Quench.
We would live to see a top 10 vintage video or even series 🔥
I totally expected Brainstorm being the top dog! It's ok, give it two years and it will be. Btw the Mercadian Masques illustration is by far the best one :D
Can I make a video suggestion?
Top 10 cards that quickly became multi-format all stars. Basically, the top 10 standard cards that saw eternal format play the fastest.
Genuinely surprised dark ritual isn't on this list.
I'd love if u could made an extension, from top 20 to top 10
Is there any vintage deck that plays ancestral recall but not brainstorm? Seems unlikely.
That's a fair point
There were 2 years and 9 sets between the two, it got a pretty good head start. Did people play it as much as they do now before fetch lands I wonder..
@@stevefink2824 they did play it a lot, but fetches boosted it's play. brainstorm only really became format defining in 2002. Ancestral had been format defining since 1993, almost a decade head start.
@@stevefink2824 People didn't play it a lot of before fetchlands as often getting stuck with dead cards on top wasn't great. I remember Impulse being played a lot more at that time.
I would honestly be really excited to see “Top ten creatures”
It will come one day.
Nizzahon Magic Have you done top 10 creatures for specific colors already?
When I got to #2 I had no idea what #1 could be, I gave a little thought to recall, but I didn’t think that it’d actually be there...
I ended up guessing it’d be fatal push
Damn, i predicted lightning bolt higher up (and a switch from dismember - swords to plowshares) :D
And yes, like many others i thought that ancestral would be no3/4, just because it's only legal in vintage. But damn, >600 points in that format alone :D
Worked at a hooby shop selling magi card in the late 2000’s. Path to Exile jumped from 0.50 to $7 overnight.
Am i the only one who finds it ironic that bolt is in number 3?
Not ironic but aesthetically pleasing
The amount of spells I've countered with Mana leak makes it number 1 to me
Not having Vampiric Tutor or Brainstorm but having Path is kinda hilarious
I'm a little surprised Giant Growth, seemingly a staple of green and basically like stapling the power of a lightning bolt onto a creature, didn't make it... but then I remembered Blue is all about card manipulation and has like, 20 different counters at cheap costs, and quit being surprised.
When was the last time giant growth has been playable? I didn't even know it was ever played outside of limited.
You discounted 4 cards because they had over half their points in sideboards. Can you do a top 10 sideboard cards, using the same definition, gaining over half their points in sideboards?
Yep, some day.
Awesome!
@@NizzahonMagic hope to see this one too
Lightning bolt is the best red card ever printed. Any creature that doesn't have 4 or more toughness left after the attack phase of a turn if you've got one mountain left is gone.
Agreed. Can't think of another card better than it
When your opponent casts a discard and you respond with a Brainstorm to protect your keycards. Sweet :)
This mainly applies to targeted discard, with "look at your opponent's hand and choose".
If it's non-targeted discard, you might as well discard the Brainstorm itself.
When your opponent casts a discard and you knock him the fuck out and take his shit and bail.
Well it's been 2 years! Can we get a new top 20 instants now?
Oh baby, we got a big one today
Top 3 guesses before I watch: lighting bolt, force of will, dark ritual. (Not in order)
Why would you expect a burn spell and a counterspell to be on the list when those categories were excluded from Wednesday’s 10 worst?
@@bfrobin446 there's a picture of lightning bolt
ohhhh what a gaff
@@bfrobin446 why would excluding them from the worst mean they are excluded from the best?
Big score cards!!! I love it!!!
Now I just want to make a 5-colour deck filled with all these!
I thought you were going to put swords and path together on the list to save space, as they're basically very similar in effect and the notes on path were short.
Would've been nice to see abrade or cryptic command talked about a bit
Ancestral Recall was a no-brainer
Swords to plowshares is a crazy card.
There was exactly one time I turned lightning bolt down in favor of another 1 mana burn spell. Galvanic blast in affinity
Number 10 has 216 points?? You should done a Top 30!
You should do top ten cards in all of mtg (other than power nine)
So if there are multiple copies of a card in the deck does it get points for each copy? Or is it just 1 point for being in a deck?
1 point for beeing in deck or sideboard
Can't wait for Creatures next! (Hopefully)
It will happen eventually!
Top 10 decks that are the hardest to pilot. (Require the most skill but still win)
That's very difficult to measure. What would be the main criteria? How many colors it ran, how many unique pieces (non 4 ofs/ playsets), whether or not it was a combo deck, do decks that had weird wincons but were easy to navigate once their gimmick (Deaths shadow for example) was figured out. Does having a lot of opposition like sideboard pieces bump you up on the list since grave strategies can get dunked on games 2 and 3. Too many variables.
@@w47765 i leave that to nizzahon to decide
Top 10 decks that require double sided sleeves to play
Just like an Instant, the Glorious Lobster Emperor arrives on time to shill their video topic!
Do Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)!
Oh, and Ancestral Recall is only legal in Vintage, so do Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)!
At least one of the Power 9 are on this list :)
@@nickbalmes6640 Indeed it is!
We've probably seen a fair chunk of it here, but I still really want to see that list too
0:26 You haven't done creatures yet? Which one was it then that Snapcaster won?
Wizard
@@yata7450 Oh. Tbh Wizards are the only creatures I like to play.
Mostly surprised by not seeing Counterspell or Mana Drain on the list than by what what I did see.
Great list
Thanks!
I'm actually surprised Fatal Push didn't make it even with it being relatively new compared to everyone else.
Calling Bolt.
This feels like the most important top 10 of all time.
Agreed. He says format defining a lot, but these cards a really MTG-defining.
Wow, what a list :O
Really thought counterspell would have been on this list. I mean, it's quintessential. How far away from the list was it?
Counterspell would rank lower than mana drain by a whole lot and that wasnt even on there.
@@kobisjeruk But Counterspell has been in Standard forever, Mana Drain only in Vintage and Legacy (I think?).
Love the vids, do you or anyone else have advice on how to beat a buddies +1/+1 counter deck. I was so close to winning but one of his cards was untouchable by everything and by the end of game ended up as an 11/11 card
Bounce spells
@@NizzahonMagic thank you
You know, I expected a Phyrexian mana card to be top ten, but wasn't expecting it to be the removal one. I thought for sure it would be Probe, which has the distinction of being a common that's banned in Modern for being both a free draw and a way to check if your combo is safe before trying it.
Edit: And I found out why it's not on the list. It's banned. Literally every format other than EDH and Vintage has Gitaxian Probe banned, and it's Restricted in Vintage. The reason it's not on the list is that it's as heavily restricted as Ancestral Recall without being around since the game's inception.
Well, Gitaxian Probe was legal in Modern for a very long time. So the comparison to recall isn't perfect.
How many points Daze had??? I expected it to be on the list!
Отличный видос, спасибо!
This card list is the "i'm sure someone casted one of those against you when you were new to Magic and you got 'wow, he/she is so good at this game'."
No mono-green cards huh? Maybe you could make another video about the top ten green instants.
Two surprizes, I thought bolt would be #1. And I'm kind of surprized you didnt combine Swords and PoE like you do to similar cards in other lists
Curious as to the rank of fatal push . I figured it would.have made it
Likely too young of a card, just like what I assume happened with Abrade. Otherwise, it would probably have made the list or at least honorable mention, yes.
I’m surprised that mana drain didn’t make this list
There are FOUR cards with more points than Force of Will. Crazy!
EDIT: Okay, I thought the top 2 are banned in every format except Vintage.
Dude, Brainstorm is literally the glue, that holds Legacy together. The card is so incredibly important in Legacy. Yes, Recall is banned in every format but Vintage and is restricted there. Goes to show how insane the card is.
@@ThorsShadow Yes, I only play on PC - Shandalar, the Duels of the Planeswalkers series, for a while Magic Arena until the meta got really horrible. And there was some game named "Battlegrounds" or so from I think 2004, which I also played (but that was MTG only in theme, not in gameplay). So I misremembered this one.
You didn't mention that Recall gives the option of forcing your opponent to draw, and like charms, that extra option pushed it up the list, being more valuable than a simple (U): Draw three cards. Right? 😄
Now with counterspell in modern mana leaks future really is done for.
Hmm... #2 Brainstorm chapter mark is missing. Should be at 11:20.
Mana leak OVER Counterspell? Crazy
Top 10 interrupts (even though they no longer exist)
Raynman Gaming just did?
I think this is the top10 with the highest percentage of cards I recognize, having dropped out around weatherlight because shadow was an obnoxious moneygrab ability x-D.
That being said, let me be #3 to be surprised Dark Ritual didn't make it, because doesn't every black deck start with "add 4 rituals"?
They used to start like that, but Dark Ritual hasn't really stood the test of time. Just storm plays it these days. Meanwhile, things like Lightning Bolt and Swords to Plowshares have been staples forever.
Counterspells are number 1
I'm at 0:15. Path to Exile is on this list
How many points did Thoughtseize earn?
It is a sorcery
nice
Prevideo guess
Number 1 is Lightning Bolt
Gotta say that you were close though cause bolt eclipses what's behind it by such a large margin
"Force of Will maybe the best counterspell period."
Mana Drain: am I a joke to you?
there's a debate for sure, but being free is pretty great.
fow is so much stronger.
@@rafaelsanna96 No, turn 2 we each do nothing (COUGHS* counterspell COUGHS*), but on my turn 3 I get at least 2 extra mana free...
Force of Will has it's place, but it's only good since it's run in super fast formats. Whereas Mana Drain is still fast enough (if the game doesn't end T1 then it's cheap enough), but also provides acceleration to fuel your own game plan.
Top 10 Instants?
Before I watch this Im gonna believe atleast 2 draw spells and 5 counters 3 removals and 2 combat tricks made this list.
Pretty spot on right? Except the combat tricks kinda sorta
Juranur I was wrong about the counter spells though. I didnt realize he was gonna remove sideboard staples. Ah well. Atleast my knowledge seems to fall in line with his.
I think Path of Exile is actually better than Swords to Plowshares because of its utility. In a color that does like to let you ramp or fetch lands very rarely PoE can be used in a pinch to help with that. I've exiled my own creatures to get a land out.
You would be wrong! Haha. Yes, Path has more utility, but Swords is so much better at killing opposing stuff that it is just better.
Haha!... unless maybe you cant afford it (Ancestral Recall).
How did Brainstorm only get 6 points in standard?
Probably because back in those days there was too much black being used, due to Necropotence. Brainstorm first got printed in Ice Age, Necro was out at the same time. Yes, that many people were playing black back in the day of Standard which Ice Age was legal in.
How about a hard one: top 10 artists. That is to say the artist who has the most points among all of their cards.
john avon gets disqualified for doing so many lands
@@doctorbattle2637 Only the lands are DQ'd. Sounds fair
Surprised to see the amount of color diversity here. Honestly thought it would all be blue except for bolt and path.
I mean, Blue is still all over this list.
How close was Counterspell to making the list? Obviously the competition for this one is absurd but it was still a bit surprising not to see the iconic card that has taught countless people to hate blue.
Cyan Light i was wondering that myself. surprised it didnt even get an honorable mention with the cut cards
2 years ago it had 156 points. it probably has a few points more now, but nowhere near these cards.
Exa roc gotcha, thanks
@@exaroc571 So "only" 60 behind 10th place, thanks for checking. Obviously 156 is still a very respectable number but yeah, this is list is sliiiightly ridiculous in terms of power level.
It would be pretty cool to eventually see some longer lists for the major type categories like this, since there are going to be so many amazing cards going even further down it could be interesting to see a top 25 or even top 50 for instants, creatures and such one day. It would also be 2-5 times as much work and 2-5 times as long for people to watch though, so not sure how likely he is to ever do those.
Wait isn't Path to Exile technically white ramp?
is it wrong that I only play new formats because the older cards are just such eyesores?
yes it is
I want to say....brainstorm?
Edit: Ahhhh, I was close.
I would love to see you do a video just on all MTG cards, but I hazard a guess that you will just be doing a repeat of this video.
The power 9. End of video :D
Guys, we all know the answer, One With Nothing, the power to discard you hand for ONLY ONE mana is OP giving you so much tempo over your opponet, we all know that's it's been in the number one combo deck in the world, and even won Worlds in 2018 event with all top 8 decks running 4 copies. There is no disputing the power of discarding you ENTIRE hand...
NIV-MIZZET THE FIREMIND, CURIOSTY AND ELIXIR OF IMMORTALITY NEEDS TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION

Any change sharing 11-20 places in comment section since you probably have made research for them?
How is Mana Drain not 2nd on that list, right behind Ancestral Recall? It's objectively the best counterspell in the game, as it costs only 2 mana, has no conditions, and adds the mana that they paid for their spell into your pool next turn (e.g. counter a 5-drop, and you add 5 mana to your mana poll during your next main phase). gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/printings.aspx?multiverseid=1491
