  • Uganda's President Admits: Expelling Indians in 1972 was a "Mistake" | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has admitted that expelling Indians in the 70s was a "mistake". Uganda's former dictator Idi Amin had expelled Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi citizens from Uganda - leading to a mass exodus from the country. About 80,000 Indians living in Uganda at the time had to leave their homes and thriving businesses to migrate to safer places. Palki Sharma tells you how Museveni's admission sets an example.

Most of the Asians were not interested to go back and those who went back to reclaim their properties sold them and returned. They lost trust and most of us who settled in the west are very prosperous. Palki when you said there are 35,000 Indians in Uganda, most of them are first generation Indians who went from India. When we visited Uganda we saw Indians who came directly from India and not the former Ugandan Indians. Once bitten twice shy. Only a handful of former Ugandan Indians went back to do business in Uganda. Majority refused. Amin did not deport anyone. Firstly, he told Britain take all its citizens with them. All persons holding British citizenship was asked to leave. Britain did not want the Indians because The UK racist government decided that there were too many Indians already in the UK. Britain then asked India to take them and India refused stating that they were not Indian citizens. Amin was used as the fall guy to cover up The UK 's colonial racist policies aganist native Ugandans. All Indians asked to leave were holders of UK citizenship. How can you receive independence from from one guy and then your economy is in the hands of foreigners. The British used the Indians, their Neocolonial puppets of Tanzania, and the fact that Amin had sided with the Muslims, to discredit him and remove him from office. Then the British and their cohorts began the recolonization of Uganda The British have released all the files now . Go and check it out. Same thing happened to Muammar Gaddafy, Saddam Hussein , Bashur Assad, Zia Al Huq etc. Why was it a problem for the Indians to return to their own country? Why did they have to remain where they were not wanted when they themselves despised the native Africans. Indians come from a racist society and thats they only way the live among other people. So they need to be in India. Amin was right. Just like Trump, and everyone else who ask people who are displacing the rights of the indiginous people to leave. Arabs ask people to leave their countries every day . India did the same to the people of Bangladsh also. The Indians should have returned to India or follow the British to the U K. Museveni was wrong and is still wrong and is too political to admit the truth. All those Amin movies are UK propaganda.. 0:04

1960s was an era of anti Indian sentiments in Africa. After British colonialism ended in Africa, local African politicians needed new scapegoat and Asians were there for the taking. Lot of these Asians then had to leave their home in Africa overnight and most of them went to UK, not India, Pakistan (Undevided). Current UK prime minister Rishi Sunak comes from one such family which had to emigrate from Tanzania (Uganda's neighbour) on 1960s. History is weird. Our present is connected with our past.

In military terms there's what is called WITHDRAWAL STRATEGY. When the "Lions" kill there is a certain clothe that is put IN BETWEEN to prevent further blood loss!!! (Indeed that shouldn't shock the neighbours but surely the victim must bleed to death) so goes the jungle feiry tale.
These small animals that feed themselves after the kill are REAL SNAKE CHARMERS THAT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HYPERSOMNIA IN WHICH YOUR BONES CAN BE GROUND finish! to clear any CRIME SCENE EVIDENCE WHILE NEIGHBOURS ARE WATCHING/SLEEPING .So it is "inappropriate" to classify vultures as COMPLICIT, if you notice a similar pattern but different scenarios.

So why did they not return to India or the UK a 0:04 and excelled there? No one can claim the right to settle uninvited in anothet man's house. Those Indians were British subjects. Uganda had gained its independance and had asked all British citizens to leave lndians did not want to be in Uganda . They were eager to leave until the British abandonned them. These are facts. Many people who had settled in India from Bangladesh during the war with Pakistan that India instigated were asked by India to return to their countries. All over Europe and North America, the same countries that condemned Amin are currently asking migrants from the Ukraine, and the Arab countries to leave their shores. Mynamar is doing it right now to some other refugees. And Trump did it and will be doing it very soon. All those fake movies and lies were made to hide the real story of who the real devils were and the games they played with the Ugandans and the Indians. Go and get the files. They have been declassified. Amin held a meeting with all the concerned heads of states: the British, US, French, Indians Pakistanis and others , where he informed them that he was going to ask The UK to take all its citizens out of the newly Independent Uganda. After all if you are independent you need time and space to mold your citizens and plan for the future. The Indians were used as buffers between the Uganďans and the British colonizers who were robbing, stealing and abusing the Africans. They hated Amin because he was an independant thinking muslim.

Still why did you not return to your homeland? Why do Indians in Africa keep dodging these questions. They hate Africans but they are after the African resouces. Arabs do not buy the mess that if you make a baby in Saudi Arabia the cild is an Arab. Neither does china, but the colonizer had forced this mess on the Africans through their education system. Thats why South Africa has problems right now. The colonizers and their proxies are still refusing to leave Africa or return the stolen lands to the indignous. people. 0:04

Well Idi Amin obviously thought they weren't needed and then the business sector in the country largely collapsed and it turned out they were. Successive Ugandan Governments have since urged them to come back. You have your thoughts (as did Amin) - turns out reality and History do not align with them - wise men would learn from History!
You also said the British brought them to Nairobi - they were brought initially for labour for the railways (the locals were not in sufficient numbers and dependable). They subsequently set up businesses and towns along those railways and elsewhere. After the British, Indians have founded more towns in Kenya than anybody else - a lot of towns in rural Kenya started around a duka set up by an Indian family. @@elvisejo5885

By the time Amin left, the economy was dead. The economies around us were far ahead. We were importing everything from Kenya mainly.. Am not referring to the current situation.
Secondly, such actions of chasing foreigners from a country hasl always have drastic repercussions to any economy. Mainly because the technical know-how is not considered... If you need another example, is Zimbabwe ....
Farms were owned and run by the whites.. you wake up and give it to a chap who has not even tilled a small garden for his domestic use. What do you expect??
Chaps were given shops, factories, etc. When the Indians left UG, the best was to loot the shops .
In reference to the current situation.. frankly speaking, a few Ugandans have the capital or skills to invest in manufacturing rather they do in other sectors... the Asians do have the capacity and are doing it

@@tommugarra7675 It is not as simple as you are making it look. The foreigners get incentives, marketing and are given operating capital in certain circumstances. Unlike the locals. Secondly Amin was bad but on asking the Indians to redistribute or leave and most chose to leave shows they weren't having a heart for the country. They had established racial empires and controlled many sectors which your tribesmen have revived as they now run most of the sectors with monopoly.

What followed was a 27 year period of Asian racial & economic discrimination against the indigenous people. This, of course was ignored by then Zambian Kenneth Kaunda who seemed to have converted to Hinduism. The tide only shifted & humbled the Asians when government changed hands & the economic extension of the former colonial (British) power's were ushered back in to save the ailing sanction hit economy.

One important piece that's left out is that some of those Asians were racist, although Palki did not refer to that. Yes, indeed, some of those British Indians were disrespectful towards the locals and looked down on them due to their caste system, and that too was unacceptable, but that should've never justified their expulsion! They were prosperous because the locals consumed their products and were part of everything they ventured into, so one needs to be respectful and kind and recognize that as a fact in the community you're part of!

Why Indian Muslim think that you can blame Indian Hindus for being racist on all global topics ? Do you have any solid proof of India doing any discrimination of Africans ? What is the basis of discrimination?
When it comes to taking benefits( like reservation in govt jobs and educational institutions, hajj subsidy from Hindu temple tax and so on) you people think of yourself as minorities of India but when it comes to spread hate about country you become the front runner and that too without solid proof . Even Hitler spread such things against Jews without a proof that lead to their persecution .
India is the only country in the world where majority is getting treated badly and even if we think of getting United the Muslims starts feeling threatened by this .

It is important to treat the local population with respect and be part of the community. Don't look down on them as inferior to you on account of race. This was the case for the Asian people in Uganda and Idi Amin exploited that as reason for their expulsion. He had the power to bring about legislation to stamp out racism and discrimination in the country but he took the wrong approach. These were Ugandans by right irrespective of their original ethnicity. Lesson: Wherever you plant your roots, see yourself as part thereof, not a superior to the locals. Chinese in Africa, take note. They have shops, clubs and recreational areas that are exclusive to them and locals are not allowed. What do you call that? If you find the country good enough to live in, you should find the people good enough to interact and socialise with. Time to leave prejudices behind us as humans. The world is now a global village.
Kudos Mr. President sir, for acknowledging a past wrong. Waiting for Zimbabwe to also right the wrongs Robert Mugabe did to white Zimbabweans.

Am a Ugandan and I support president M7 100% for He is a peace loving president but we Ugandans know the real truth of Idd Amin. Uganda has only had two presidents dat is Iddi for He was a patriotic and too African to impress the imperial powers. M7 has just been wise enough to play them at their game. But IDD AMIN DADA was a blessed gift sent from heaven to our motherland. God bless AMIN for He laid a big founding stone for our country. Any Indian who left the country during his rule were Indians who weren't ready to be Ugandans and chose UK as their county but those whose chose to be Ugandans till now are there and all thy know is their Indian roots but are proud Ugandans, I mean I know of such families. And abt the corrupacy of the economy it the sanctions that the imperialist put on him so as bring him down. The western powers played their best games hence his downfall. Ugandans were so poor and discriminated in their own land thus his raise. I always say listen to the news but don't believe the news do ur own research. Right now if AMIN was to come back to life and stood for elections believe me he wld win undecisively. But we have M7 its fine too. We shall not make the mistake that the people during AMIN made and that is listening to propaganda, this time we are choosing our own.

Secondly, he urged influential Asians to cease mistreating black Ugandans, as they had developed a caste system in Uganda. Additionally, all the ‘expelled’ Asians were compensated by the government. Expelling a foreign mercantile class that colonization installed over the native population in order to break their monopoly on the economy and wealth in the country was not a mistake. It was an unfortunate necessity to throw off the foreign colonial yoke. It's absurd that a foreign minority imposed on Africans by colonization should own 90% of the businesses and wealth in the country. How could Africans ever live or thrive in that condition? Building factories for Africans to be worker bees in is not a real benefit to the African people. The power of these returnees is the reason for the statement. The real mistake is to allow oneself to become dependent upon any minority especially clannish and hostile and insular minorities which both Indians and whites have often proven to be. Prove me wrong. Now answer these questions: Would Indians or whites allow black people or black Africans to behave in their home countries the way they have and often still do in Africa. Would they accept the same kind of attitudes from black people in their homelands? There needs to be a lot more honesty in this conversation and a lot more historical and current context inserted.

Do you feel that that is the way it should be and only fround upon when the lighter skin Indians are mistreated? Maybe the Ugandan President was aware of how these darker skin people were treated and did not want his own people to be treated that way no matter how much the Indians brought to Uganda. Your being treated like a human being is worth any amount of money. I say, WELL DONE Mr President.
