- Eley Ammo which is the best value? - CZ 457 LRP - Team vs. Match vs. Tenex at 50 yards
In this video I will put the top 3 Eley match 22LR flavours up against each other to see where the best bang for the buck is in the higher end Eley line up. My local shop sells both Team and Match for $16.99 and Tenex will cost me $28.99. Will the extra $12.00 make the rifle shoot 1/3 better than the Team and Match??? Watch this video and find out how they performed in my CZ 457 LRP!
My rifle has a few after market parts on it. The list of parts I added are a 22" Internation Barrels Inc. Olympic contour 1:16 right twist barrel, a Timney flat blade trigger (TT-CZ457-SB), a custom Arca Swiss rail and diy bipod mount. The bipod I use is a bipod factory carbon 6-9" swivel model. the optic used is a Vortex Razor HD Gen I 5-20 x 50 Mil/Mil with Vortex Precision rings and bubble level. Apart from this the action hasn't been touched as well as the stock.
Although this rifle shoots very well in my opinion for the price, I want to find an ammo that is good and consistent that also doesn't break the bank in the process. There are definitely less expensive alternatives out there and I have a feeling I already know what the winner will be!
Tenex and match are literally the same ammunition from the same machine, when they batch test the batches with better results for in tenex boxes and the rest goes into match. I was told this from a British team member who goes to the factory to batch test to choose his competition ammunition. Save your money and stick with match
Great to know thanks for sharing this! I’ll pin this comment
Ya I believe most makers of rimfire top tier ammunition are dealt with that way
Thanks for sharing your testing. I usually shoot 5 5-shot groups of 5 different lots of Eley Match and have found much variation. It gets expensive but the results are worth it. My CZ 457 is accurate with selected lots. I also understand that results will probably vary between different rifles. As well, I usually ask 3-4 good shooters to share in the testing. Blessings
Watching from Fayetteville North Carolina, just want one of your Brotuned stickers!
Keep commenting on my videos I’ll be randomly picking out comments and sending them stuff.
Eley contact is the only Eley I buy and really like it despite a flier about every 10th shot. But for consistently good groups it's SK Pistol Match for lower to mid priced ammo.👍 Enjoyed the video as always!
Eley Contact shoots really well from my Ruger 10/22 target tactical. I posted some 100 yard groups with it. Eley Action (42grn) also shot subMoA at that distance...
That’s very good I’ll take sub moa anytime in any rifle. If it will do that all day then that’s perfect
@@BROTUNED ..I found a guy on Rimfire Central, Hank Ellis, he's been chronographing .22lr ammo for years after I first shot Eley Action because I couldn't believe how good it was. Once I found the chrono data (ES and SD are super low) it made sense...
As previously stated Eley do a run of what they hope is all Tenex but in reality the batches vary. What they do now is batch test their Tenex and if if falls below a certain level it is sold as Match. If it falls below a standard for Match,it is sold as Team. I got this information from Eley .However they are not unique in this practice as other manufacturers do the same because they can’t recycle rimfire.
No eley ammo shoots good in any of my czs. Good job on the videos I watch all of them it saves me money I don't have to wonder if that eley will shoot better. Thanks
Beagleman
You said it your Barrel likes SK good to have you back👍
It’s good to be back and I’m going to try and get a head of schedule again. It tough when I’m going week to week and trying to make good quality videos. The summer heat is supposed to start cooling down again which makes it easier and more enjoyable to do also. Cheers
My brother gave me some team however I kept it for a better rifle, finally I have a CZ 457 Jaguar. Now if the weather would cooperate. I’m looking a getting some Hi quality standard velocity ammo
Great Video. Try Federal Automatch. Cheap like dirt but works great in 457 Match chamber
I'll check it out
I appreciate you taking the time to provide us this information!
My pleasure!
Here is a tip for testing ELEY Ammo on every different rifle/barrel. You need to test 3 or 4 lots of each type (e.g. Tenex, Match) with different speeds (the last number of the lot label). So if testing Tenex, choose a box of 1044, 1053, 1076 and maybe a 1080. Each box will shoot a bit different. From the 3 or 4 speeds, you should find one that works best and then you can order a few bricks of it. When first choosing, make sure you choose from lots that the supplier has much of. You hate to find the perfect lot and go back to find it's all sold out. Hope this helps.
Ya thanks for this tip it’s just hard to get even two different lots where I live the shop will get a skid of ammo and it’s this is your option basically I have ent seen 2 different lots of the same ammo ever. I wish I know where to find this stuff in different lots. If anyone in Canada 🇨🇦 can point in in the right direction I’d love to try a few different lots someday
Having surprisingly good results with team in my 457 and Cooper 57M running .35/.41 and occasional .27/.29 at 50 yds and I’m 86 yrs old but I do use a wind flag at the bench
That’s very respectable for sure! Glad to hear this I hope you have a great day sir cheers from your friend Ryan from Brotuned
Newly purchased a CZ 457 Jaguar and I’m loving it. It had some trigger work done for competitive shooting. I’ve never shot Eley ammo but thinking about trying it. Thanks for the video.
Mine really likes/runs good with the ELEY Contact, Benchrest Outlaw & Force. All the 42gr. Been through 250+ rounds of Contact with every one in or very close to the bullseye @ 50 yards. Stock barrel with trigger adjusted. Contact is just a bit over $5 a box & is very consistent through my Jaguar, so far!
@@joshbrekke6374 thanks for the info
Eley Match and Tenex are really suited to ISSF match rifles.. my Anschutz Match 54 will shoot sub 0.5MoA at 50m with Eley Match. For Match the bore needed shooting in as Tenex and Match use a unique bullet lube. Tenex shooters in the UK often get Tenex batch matched to thier rifle at the Eley factory. My SIG522 will shoot 3 MoA with match at 25m, but 0.5 MoA with CCI standard. Suppose its in the chamber and barrel. Match and Tenex are absolutely match grade.
My 457 shoots well with Team and Match however only slightly better then SK plus and that is almost 1/2 the price . Was hoping Club would shoot well but it didn’t like it so no Eley for me . Enjoy your content
Thanks for sharing this with me! I agree the sk is where I’m going to put my money also. Great performance for a great price can’t beat that combination
I've 4 cz's, one with an IBI barrel and none like eley ammo. Hope the holidays were great. Keep up the good work!
Thanks I’m actually still on holidays but more of a stay home and finish projects when the weather cools down a little bit more because it’s been very hot here lately and makes any work really stressful. But I’m getting back at it now filmed one today and hoping to get ahead of schedule here soon.
Looks good to me but the ibi chamber does prefer SK ammo. My factory LRP chamber prefers RWS/Norma ammo but does extremely well with Eley and SK. I shot a 10 stage ORPS rimfire match yesterday and came in 3rd overall with my factory 457 LRP using SK standard, narrowly being edged out by a custom B14r. Great video as usual.
Thanks you! The factory set up is definitely a great way to go. I would have to argue best rifle for the money
@@BROTUNED 100% My B14r is great but not as good as my LRP straight out of the box.
Don’t have an lrp, but my 457 prefers sk. Semi auto rifle sk is relatively cheap and shoots great.
I agree 100%
My CZs (I have 10 of them) don't like Eley much but they do seem to like SK. My Bergara, on the other hand, likes both Team and Match.
10 cz’s that’s awesome! How do you like the Bergara compared to the cz457 if you have one?
Most of my CZs are 452s bought 15 or 20 years ago. I think I have one of every model they made back then. I do have a recently acquired 457 MTR that only has a couple hundred rounds through it. It is not particularly fond of Eley but time will tell what it does like. My B14R is approaching 1K rounds and it likes Team and Match. Shot my first match with it a couple weeks ago and finished in the middle of the pack shooting Team. Very happy with the Bergara. It isn't nearly as ammo picky as the CZs. I'm sure the MTR will do great once I get it sorted.
Sweet my CZ 453 varmint love's SK standard it's about the best bang for the buck in my rifle but keep up the great videos 🤘
I am with you one that one! Cheers 🍻
My CZ 457 MTR does well with SK Rifle Match, but does extremely well with Norma Tac 22. However, I do have a bolt shim, and a Harrell barrel tuner also. I'm with you, I tried a couple of Eley ammo's and it was ok, but for half the price I get ammo that does as good and usually better.
Agreed. My CZ 456 MTR shoots Norma tac 22 really well too. 👍
Maybe I’ll have to pull out the Norma stuff and give it a good test
I think maybe you need to shoot more shots to season the bore for each type of ammo.
Yes and simply not clean the barrel too…results will be better for sure…no way could I make this vid with 45 shots I’d use all three bricks to be honest
Ya I was thinking about that too but I also wanted to see how many shots before the barrel settles down
I've had the same experience in my CZ457. Tried just about all the Eley variations, and still prefer SK match ammo. For bulk ammo, Aguilla Super Extra Plated Round Nose is my current favorite.
I haven’t had much luck with the aguilla super extra
Yeah I did the same thing and you are absolutely right it is the best by far. And believe me I have tried it all sk standard center x eley club match and all the others and I will stick with center x and sk and not all of them shoot you have to have the right lot for your rifle. And that's a fact.
Beagleman
Thanks for the test. I've found that SK or Lapua ammo to be more consistent the last couple of years. Sad to see the Eley stuff dropping off in quality.
Ya sk is where I’m putting my money from now on
Your one of top 5 I always watch on the “tube”. Never really had any great results with Eley with my 457MTR. The SK pistol match has always been a good go to for it as well as the standard. Just a thought try a vid on bulk showdown groups. Federal Automatch in most lots are really decent.
I will do that thanks
I had similar results with Tenex. 3 different rifles and it didn't shoot well in any of the rifles. (Vudoo, Lithgow, Kidd). Ely Target at $5 a box out shot the Tenex in every rifle.
Is your voodoo picky about ammo?
Love the videos man good to see you back on here. As much as we enjoy shooting family time is much better also congrats on 10,000 subs definitely on of the vest channels on youtube
Thanks so much!
I’m on holidays as of today again but staying close to home so I’ll get some shooting time in for sure. We have a heat wave pushing through right now so I won’t get out for the next few days most likely
Its been kinda on the cool side for us here in ky for the past week but they say another heat wave is coming through this week keeping us around 100 but we can only do what we can i got them notifications on so i will be waiting to see the next one when you can enjoy your time of my friend
I've moved away from any Eley and gone to SK long range match for my CZ 457 and it shows in the NRL22 Base leaderboard, I was ranked second in June.
That’s awesome! I also prefer to shoot sk and I can actually get it anytime I need it at the local shop.
Val.lagil 😅😊
Dear Sir,
Thank you for great CZcams channel. My 2 cent worth suggestions, (1) Please make aiming point very small (2) On one target do 10 groups of 5 shots so 1 box is spent (3) May be nice front rest will help
I was going to shoot more groups but I think the videos would be to long and people would loose interest. I have been looking into front and rear rests for some time now but don’t have the money to spend on them as of now. Hopefully 🤞 I will in the future. What rest would you recommend for me and my style of shooting
@@BROTUNED ,, 2nd hand Sinclair should be around U$ 200 - 300. Bipod is ok but position and pressure on bipod won’t be same from shot to shot and that effects accuracy. Usually i see rifle butt is sort of hanging not firm / stable in same position. Possible that i might be wrong in everything i said.
I wish Killough would list the Lot numbers for Team. They do for SABRP.
Hi! Love your chanel! I have a similar setup to yours and I have the same results. From what I understand, you have to adjust the headroom with shims when you switch to Eley with the cz and the ibi barel. Its on my todo list.
I have tried shimming my bolt and it definitely tightened up the headspace but made the bolt harder to close which I couldn’t get used to. I didn’t see anything as far as groups tightening up so I just removed it and went back to stock
@BROTUNED welp, you just saved me time and money, thank you!
Excellent videos, makes me want to try different ammunition in my rifles.
Do it it’s fun and gets very fun if you find a lower priced ammo that out shoots the high dollar stuff
Thanks for posting this
No problem!
Thanks! Always look forward to watching a fellow Canadian shooting with Canadian made barrels…try to get some rws rifle match ammo
Thanks for the great content!
Glad you enjoy it! follow ringet421 on instagram and pm me you are the winner for this week!!!! if you don't mind ill mention your name on next weeks video
Sent you an email and messaged you on instagram.
Just a couple of comments. You may want to check for carbon ring in your chamber now and again if any ammo is not performing as expected. Then after cleaning barrel and removing carbon ring in chamber area, foul in your barrel before testing ammo to season it in.
Eley ammo has a thinner thickness in the rim than compared to Lapua or SK and requires a different headspace for optimal accuracy with Eley.
Third is that your barrel chamber may be cut to favor the Lapua/SK ammo for bullet seating and not as much so for Eley. This can also impact performance and hence why you lot test within the same brand as well as different brands to see what your specific rifle likes.
You are asking the right questions, but you need to investigate as to “why” it shoots Eley this way and decide if you want to make the appropriate adjustments to your rifle setup or just simply change ammo brand and shoot what works.
What did you set your headspace at when you installed your barrel? I just got a 23” lilja so that was my first time figuring out how to set headspace. Also do those barrels come with a shim kit?
My barrel did not have shims with it I think it’s set to factory headspace. I did buy trigger shims shim kit for the cz 457 and I didn’t notice any improvement just a significantly harder bolt closure
It's not always the most expensive ammo that is going to shoot the best in a rifle. That is why we test different types and different lots.. I'd try some Eley Club, and the Semi Auto Benchrest ammo. That stuff is only $9-$12.00/box.. As far as what you shot in this video. I'd be disappointed as well. I have Federal automatch that shoots better in some of my rifles.
Really surprised at the results. Used to use Tenex back in the day for .22 target rifle and would take the bull out at 50yards. Maybe a dip in quality control. Having said that, I use SK the same as you and have had great results. Keep it up I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks so much! I think my money is going to Sk ammo also better value as far as testing has shown
Shoot more rounds ,season barrel, quit cleaning your barrel..clean the chamber every 400 ish rounds…all 3 of my ibi’s shoot match awesome…I have 2-1/12 twist barrels in 20” and 1- 1/14 twist barrel 22”
How do they do compared to 1:16? I’ve always wanted to try a faster a twist barrel but don’t have the money to experiment
And for the love of god stop cleaning the barrel haha
The 1/12 are tighter than 1-16 at like 150 metres plus….the 1/14 is tighter than the 1/16 50 metres -100 maybe even further the 1/14 is fairly new….and it’s hard for me cuz I have 3 ibi barrels being 1/14 on a cz 457 and a 1/12 on an ultimatum deuce action and a 1/12 on a cz 457 action and they all have different stocks lol so there’s sooooo many differences and torques and whatnot lol
Noticed you didn’t have any problems with extraction. Did you try the Volquartsen extractors?
I actually have them but haven’t installed them yet. I want to revisit the problematic ammunition that I had experienced extraction issues with. I will be doing this soon. Well I’ll record the video soon not sure when the release date will be.
Wish there was a way to send you a couple of boxes of RWS R50
Me to I haven’t even seen R50 anywhere yet
I have not been able to find any RWS 50 in BC either just RWS club and target rifle
I’m not fond of anything Remington in 22lr
I think it’s still the same as match but Remington just put their name on it. I could be wrong but that’s what I believe is the case. I haven’t been able to find anymore lately but I’m always looking
Definitely not impressed. At the moment I'm looking for ammo to replace SK Rifle Match, because although I live in Germany where SK is manufactured it is out of stock.
That’s awful they send it all to the US and don’t let you guys get any
Some of those groups I believe were weather reports.
Wolf Match or Wolf match Extra.
I have never seen that ammo anywhere in Canada before if anyone knows where I could find some I’d love to test it out
❤❤
Try the same test with a Kid 10/22 you’ll sell that 457 lol
Just goes to show ya price ain’t everything on a Rimfire ammo.
Exactly
I have watched some of your videos and am disappointed in your testing routine. First of all, you cannot test rimfire ammo in windy conditions Period! And then, with no wind flags to boot! You are literally wasting ammo!
I’ll take that criticism and I’ll work on this point you have made. Thanks for the feedback I genuinely appreciate it and I’ll change the way I do tests to eliminate the variables caused by wind. It’s hard to get super calm days where I live at least within the hours I can legally shoot my rifles but again thanks ind I’ll keep this in mind. Have a great day Cheers 🍻
Shhhh, sk kicks eleys ass !!!
Test was useless. Windy, barrel seasoning.
Same wax on all bullets and tested in real world conditions but I hear what you are saying
Promo>SM 👊
lol that's a ugly chassis. good shooting bud
Thanks so much. I have been trying to reach out to companies to try a different product as far as chassis go but the problem is I’m in Canada and it’s hard to get different brands up here.
Mohammed Shaker Joy
First thing you should do is invest in a Harrell's tuner and tune your rifle barrel to a lot number of ammo. If you aren't shooting over wind flags, all you are doing is wasting ammo. Get a clue.
