- I had a need for a cyclone separator for my CNC because it keeps plugging the filter in my shop vac. I didn't want to spend a bunch time building one so I though I would put one together as simple as I could and checks its efficiency. I think it turned out pretty good for a total of 20 minute work time to build it.

Simple... effective... cheap... what else can I hope? I'm going to do that "apparatus" right now! The best part: the efficiency test, 97%! Thanks Sir!
Love the simplicity. Cheap, fast and quite frankly the others on YT are over engineered/designed relative to its usage. Most of us are not cabinet makers or work in a surgical operating room with tools to even make their complicated components. Thanks.
That's what I call simple and effective way to get things done ! Love it. Well done.
just made one last night ! So easy I could not believe how fast I made it ! Works beautifully too ! Thanks for the idea ! Keep makin cool stuff !
I think this is my guide, favorite build so far. I'll add baffles to get the finer stuff out and I may never need a new filter for my vacuum. ha ha Thanks for sharing.
That's what I'm talkn bout.Cheap, fast an easy. Gonna work great in my little 12x16 shop. Great idea with parts at hand. Keep up the great work
Love how simple this turned out. I've been thinking about making one for myself and its really easy to over-complicate it. Well done!
Impressive results from such a quick build. Great project and thanks for the video.
Thanks. Finally a dust separator that is not over engineered to death. This is very achievable and in my price range. Great job!
You measured the set-up's efficiency, what I would like to comment on is the work-time / usefulness ratio, it's fantastic - a really worthwhile addition to a workshop for amazingly little time and money. I am going to make the exact same. Thanks.
I'm glad to see someone actually measured the efficiency of one of tjese instead of just looking in the bucket and filter. Nice job!
A simple and extremely effective dust collector. This will be on my to-do list.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you, Sir. This has been on my to-do list for a while... ever since I saw how crazy expensive cyclone separators are online. You did a fine job.
Thank you! There do seem little pricey for what they are...
Awesome video! I've seen so many separator builds where people are custom building designer buckets, secondary and tertiary filtration systems, even toroidal spiral inlet hoses. THIS VIDEO is the one I've wanted to see where using parts on hand you made an effective separator without a ton of time or materials. THANK YOU!
Glad it could help!
Thanks for watching

i second this comment
This is by far the best set up for a DIY cyclone shop vac vacuum. "easy peasy" and it works
I literally just returned a dust deputy $54. I thought that was overpriced, turns out I needed the super dust deputy $150 Not happening.
Now it’s figure out what I can scrounge up . You did it for the good of us all the other cheep guys ..This is a great idea , I have everything ( free ) A+ , simple build . Thanks
Thanks for sharing, I made my separator today with just a few modifications and it works great.
That is awesome! You've inspired me to try this out in my shop. Thanks for the video! You're content is always impressive.
Holy cow, given what this is, 98% interception before the vac is pretty impressive if you ask me! GREAT video, one of the shortest, most to the point cyclone separator vids I've watched. Great job, my man.
What a good idea. I did the same thing (with the exact same bucket) and I really like it. It’s really easy to do and will help to preserve my shop vac. I burn the motor of my previous one cause I didn’t use bag (too much dust and wood). Now i can use bag in the shop vac without having to change it two time per day. Thank you very much.
Perfect DIY cyclone. It does the job, least amount of time, parts are laying around and ready to go.
Nice attention to detail even for a quick build. I like the "upcycle" of the shop vac parts.
Thanks!

Simple, direct, that is awesome build and wonderful use of the parts you had on hand.
Thanks!
Well done. Nice utilization of easy to come by components. I am going to build one the first chance I get.
Exactly what I been looking for have the same bucket and basically the same adapters laying around nicely done
Looks like it works as good as some I’ve seen that took days to build, well done 👍
I'm just about to make one of these from another vid I watched. I was trying to find that vid again when yours popped up, and I'm glad it did. Your method is so much easier, and I have spare parts from broken vacuum cleaners I can use. Cheers!
Great video quick, easy, efficient and inexpensive.
Very well done
Best cyclone video on CZcams. I'm making one just like this... thanks man!
I Did It similar one. Works great. No dust in the filter.
Great job. Super efficient and super simple.
I am making one of these right now and this helped a lot. Be aware that chlorine buckets are vented and don't make a tight seal. There is a slight gap between the lid and bucket. Round surgical tubing makes a great gasket.
Simple, simple, simple! Using shop vac parts genius.
Love it, I have the same attachment, going to give this a shot
I made one of your bucket collector it works great !!! I have it on my shop vac to use on my Radial arm saw . I just installed into my shop I am on CZcams as well ! Thanks for sharing your idea Best Regards BobLee
Love it!! Nice job.. I'll do that for my shop vac.
Built it, works great, been using it for months. Cheap and furious, as we say in our parts. Thanks a bunch.
nice!!
Easy, Simple, Cheap. What more can you ask for in a cyclone separator. Great job Ryan!!!
Thanks Richard!
Using the wand end was a great idea ! The norm has been to scribe cut the end of a tube or block of wood to the radius of the bucket which took some time. I made mine that way and it wasn't any more efficient than the simple way you did yours. I also used the hot melt glue gun and it has held up great, and quick too.
Jeff
Simplest I've seen...so maybe I will actually finally make one! Thanks.
DAM....Not only is this a great build...You made use of all parts and attachments i never use !!! GOOD JOB.. THANKS !!
Very easy and very efficiency, good job!
YESSS, that hose attachment thingy for the inlet! That's what I need to use.
I've made mine using your model and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much.
+Garaplus nice! Glad it worked for you:)
Nice simple solution. Now know what I'm going to spend an hour on this afternoon. Hot glue was a great idea for sealing it up.
THAT was awesome. Cheers! Chris.
Very cool, something that may make it even more efficient is to maybe add a little metal screen to the port going in to your main vacuum. Very cool design though. I used to see vacuum parts like this at the thrift stores all the time. I have to start looking for them again. Thanks for the cool idea.
How simple it is! Thanks I need to start right away instead of going to
Home depot to buy all connectors.
Built one last week. Works great
Great job ! No need for twin buckets, thanks for sharing
Nice , simple , cheap, love it.
truly easy. good work.
Nice work man.
I've made a very simple separator the same way and the only draw back I found was the shop vac attachment that is cut into the side of the bucket gets clogged pretty easy if a large piece gets sucked up. I fixed that by flushing up the attachment to the inside curve of the bucked. And I found I liked it so much I cut the bottom of my bucket out leaving a 1 inch lip all the way around and secured it to the lid of another and bucket then just snap it on and it doubles your dust catching capacity haha love the videos by the way!
I was kinda worried about that as well, I do plan on just using it for the CNC so there shouldn't be to much load on it but making it flush would be a easy fix. Thanks for watching!
Leaves the fancier versions "in the dust". Way less time and just as efficient.
Nice easy cyclone! I like it.
If it hadn't been said before, I'll say it now...how effective to actually use shop vac attachments vs buying PVC fittings for the build. Like many, I have lots of attachments I never use but are set for the larger diameter hoses. Save a few $$ using them up vs searching for and having to modify PVC elbows. Kudo's for showing the build as I haven't as yet built one but paid over $40 for a kit from Rockler "in the event of" but recently bought PVC fittings I'll take back. Having an inground pool that I've over 20 leftover 100# pail buckets w screw on lids great for storage, I'll be using one as it's heavier for a base but better wall construction also. Key thing is the extra vacuum cleaner also. Great video
That is a great idea so simple and effective
Thanks!
I'm late to the party on this video, but this is awesome. I'm definitely going to do this!
Phil
Made one and It is working great. Thanks much
O melhor e mais fácil que já vi, parabéns!
Thanks for the video, I made an identical setup out of a 5gal pail with excellent results. I used tape for the inlet seal just to test it & was amazed. I have seen many people that add a baffle plate but I can not see it helping much. I am considering placing the bucket on a 55gal drum & may use the base of the bucket as a baffle. Time for some trial & error.
Thx again
+David Waegele nice! I think a baffle might help with some of the finer dust.
Thanks for watching
Ryan
Awesome investment of time. In 20min 97% of efficiency. Well done! Regards from Barcelona.
Thanks!
Cheap, quick and efficient. Excellent! Thanks.
+AndyB thank you!
best part. cost was basically free. keep being awesome

Great video. I think I will put a piece of aquarium carbon filter at the top suction line, in the bucket. That stuff doesn't restrict air flow and should trap the other 3-4%. I love design won't cost a penny to use stuff around shop that I already have with little fabrication. Perfect and simple. Thanks
That is awesome. I need to make one of those before I blow out my shop vac.
The good news is it won't take long:)
This is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you! I've watched a couple dozen builds, but this is the best for a very fast, effective and cheap solution. Awesome.
How long did that "structural" hot glue last before you had to repair it? :)
I bet it you use the original deep bucket you get even more efficiency. Great vid - Thanks!
Awesome idea... I paid way to much for my dust deputy 👎... Your videos rocks!
That is great ! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Great best efficiency
Excelente idea, práctica y funcional
great job thanks for sharing
Great JOB!!!
Best video yet !
It's a wonderful cyclone ♪
WOW! Super simple and a LOT easier than building the Frein separator.
Love it- I would've weighed the bucket then you wouldn't have to scoop it back out.
98% not bad at all its close enough for me

Great job! New sub.
So simple, how did we survive before the multitool?! Love it
You can increase th efficiency by adding a baffle, made of wood or plastic, inside the bucket and above the port where dust enters. You make a hole in the middle for the outlet, with this the particles that are flying and normally doesnt settle down fast are trapped below the baffle and spin around the walls falling. The clean air stays in the middle. Thanks for this easy to make method.
Muito obrigado pela boa ideia . Quanto mais simples e eficiente . Vou compartilhar aqui no Brasil !!!
Great and fast little project, I have all kinds of shop vac parts like that as well since I have burned up one shop vac already (took a few years of abuse) I wonder if I can make this work with a square kitty litter bucket. We will soon find out.
Very noce and it looks easy
Ay mi madre q simple lo has echo. Grx.
Very good! Thanks.
does your filter plug about the same rate with the finer dust particles?
Awesome... thx for sharing...
I've seen other "20 minute dust separators" on CZcams... the difference with yours is that it looks as though you really were able to make it in 20 minutes! :o)
The pool chemical bucket is a great idea; it looks to be much stronger than the hardware store buckets most folks are using, and the screw lid is a real winner! Now... who do I know with a pool?
How would that work if you wanted to use it to pick up water?
The simplest one that I have seen to build.
Great job thank you for the build!
Congrats on a seemingly super easy project. Couple of questions: Where can I get a bucket like that one? It's appears to be sturdier with a tighter fitting lid than say a Home Depot bucket. Does the separator work well with your shop-wide dust collection system seen in a recent video?
I like it!
Yip! A braw result 😎
A thien baffle would help a lot with the seperation in that set up, simple scrap wood circle, pretty sure a 10 9/16 would be the diameter and take 1.125" off 270° or 3/4of the diameter and put the last 1/4 below the inlet
I wonder how well this will work if its scaled up. I've got the 2ph harbor freight dust collector you see all over youtube. It uses 4inch hose, and I don't think they make shop vac accessories that big. So I'm thinking about recreating your idea using a 32gallon trash can and some 4inch aluminum duct.
I used the same attachment to create a separator. The problem is when the pieces are too big for the hole. They block the suction and will collapse the container. I even cut the inside of it away as much as possible and it still clogs. Just keep this in mind.
Nice job! One question - has the hot glue held up well over time? When I watched the video, I couldn't help but think that I probably would have used a good construction adhesive in a caulk gun. This is not a criticism, just curious - I rarely use hot glue, but maybe I should use it more. Thanks for posting.
I like it. I built mine today. Is the length of adapter coming out of the lid critical? Mine is longer, but still seems to work well.
