  • It's a BATTLE OF THE TIG RODS! For this week's episode I'm going to do a Tig Welding demo using 4043 and comparing how it welds to 5356! I got a frustrated comment from a viewer who was SICK AND TIRED of all the welding CZcamsrs (not sure how many there are...?) using the "easy" rod of 5356 for their videos. So fear not! I'm here to ease your frustration by ripping some welds with the "not easy" 4043 rod. And guess what.....? I'm super thankful this was suggested to me, because I had a freaking BLAST. Check out the episode, and hope I made it a bit fun to compare the two. Plus lots of Arc Footage! Cheers y'all!

    No Silicon in 5356, just 5% Magnesium. It's much harder & stronger than 4043, hence why it rings when dropped. It also work hardens. Bend it & then try & straighten it again. Also more likely to crack (tacks especially) on occasion. 4043 flows better which I think makes it easier to weld with. Maybe not so shiny as 5356. 5000 series alloys (usually sheet & plate) should be welded with 5000 series rod. 6000 alloys (typically extrusions) can be welded with either 5356 or 4043 but, as you said, 4043 isn't good when anodised (the Silicon makes it go grey). I generally use 4043 for welding castings or sometimes 4047 (12% Silicon) on die castings when its lower melting point can help. There's also 1050 rod - pure rod for welding pure alloys. You should try that sometime!

      @@dusty1498 Aluminum boats are often made from 5083 which should ideally be welded with 5183 or 5556 filler rod. You'd probably be O.K. with 5356 for a small repair.

      if the two alloys' welds aren't bend broken both single and double sided joint types; its not as evident that the 4043 is very weak compare to the 5356 when welding 5052, 5086, 5083 to 6061. A single sided butt weld or a T joint fillet will show the relative strengths of the two fillers on marine alloys. I've used 5356 on castings (outboard repairs) almost exclusively and find them much stronger than 4043 (I haven't tried 4349 yet) especially on impact of the repair.

    You are absolutely right on the Anodizing. When it becomes anodized the weld tends to turn black.

    I haven’t welded with TIG in over ten years. Been wanting to get back into it and went looking for info on the these rods cause I couldn’t remember where to use either rod.     I would love to see a video of running aluminum beads with a picture-in-picture of your foot pedal and/or amp readout.
    Mine often flat out towards the end from heat buildup.

    I am interested to see how you are controlling the ampacity with the foot peddle in relationship to the material temp from start to finish when putting so much heat to such a small coupon. Would help demonstrate how important it is to master a foot peddle or if ones has no foot peddle what to do to control the weld and material temp, stop and quench the material temp or stop and dial down the ampacity. Its allot to as but see one camera on foot peddle, one the tigs amp draw, another on a temp gun getting the material temp and a fourth one your torch would be very educational. Great videos that save us newbies pounds of filler rods...

    I always use 4043 on cast Aluminium like car sumps or gear box housing and it works fine...pls make a vid on cast Aluminium repair sometime soon dusty.

    Alcotec has an awesome aluminum filler rod selection chart. I haven't looked at it in years, but I would think that it could still be had from the weld stores or even downloded.

    I always use 4043 and am for the first time going to use 5356 today. Let's go mag!
    Also, 5356 is quite a bit stronger than 4043 so they say use 5356 for laps and 4043 for fillets since the failure is usually outside the weld in the heat affected zone in fillets and in the weld in laps - supposedly.
    So, how bout just twisting a rod of each together? Fascinating. Gonna have to try that and make a frankenweld.

    i have 4043,4047,5356,5183,1100,AZ 31 for magnesium, low temp aluminum for pot metal. i used these rods it depents all application. i am newbie but i take a risk when repair porche fan shroud part . the part maybe more than 15 years old. but lucky i made it. i use AZ31 filler rod. since i know the difference in between mill finish and anodize type. i think twice to accept anodize job aluminum. 😂😂. i prefer weld mill finish product.

    Hello, I enjoyed watching this great demonstration. I am wondering about a few details such as the base metal was this a 6061? And I'd like to know which color tungsten you used and which brand of wire? I have found that some brands weld cleaner than others. Thank you for making this video.

    I've never used 5356 TIG filler, only 4043. I'd be interested to try it.
    I've tried to use 5356 on a spool gun and it didn't seem to be as easy to setup as 4043. But that was one time, on a new setup.

    i run a lot of 4043. for the last day ive been struggling for no reason. all of my welds were shiny but they looked like they had acne. i understand contamination & the sight of pepper on a bead. i tried different wire, different cup size, different gas rates, it was all the same. Not until the next day looking over the elegant scrap masterpiece did i realize my first welds were decent.... As it turned out i was roasting my beads. after dropping to a Ally5 furick cup and practicing my filler speed i had done 2 things. Instead of running 1/8" filler id dropped to 3/32" to match my tungsten. This was also a contributing factor. The excessive heat and lower rate of filler had my puddle still molten behind my gas coverage. The Acne look was contaminates hitting the puddle as it setup. i felt amazingly stupid after dropping my amps back down to 1 per .001 of thickness of material. In watching this video i remembered that 4043 also takes longer to chill vs. 5356. i realize this video is a year old, just noticed the coupon is smoking hot and the 5356 didnt look any different. Maybe the "Acne" im referring to is the high heat affecting the higher silica just like when you mig at to slow a rate & it appears you're experiencing gas issues. ....experience is knowing what the bad shit looks like and knowing how to stop it i guess.

    what you did not mention is 5356 is a stronger and more corrosion resistant rod than 4043. 5356 is designed for 5000 series non heat treatable alloys used a lot in the Marine industry, hope this helps Mr Dusty...cheers from Florida ....Paul

    The magnesium stiffens the alloy, so it’s a bit harder, which causes the higher pitched ringing. As far as heat goes, it not really high for 5356 before there’s a problem. 150 degrees f, is already problematic. Anything above will have the weld crack at some point. 5356, because of the magnesium, as we can tell from the hardness, is less ductile, so it moves less than the aluminum around it, including other magnesium alloys (which really shouldn’t be used in heat anyway), so it cracks as the other metal pulls it apart.

    Hey Dusty, I love your videos, super helpful advice.... I'm having trouble cleaning up my Alu projects. I was thinking in the next vid you do with Alu you could show us some techniques for grinding, burring, cleaning, cutting etc. The hardest thing in my opinion is grinding, traditional methods don't seem to work that well without lubricant, but then I worry about possible contamination. Any tips etc would be super helpful, after all, welding is just a part of what we do, as we also need to know how to work with the materials we are welding. Thanks again for all your awesome videos, peace ✌️

    I think that if you went back to to your local welding shop, this time to pick up 1lb of 4943, then make a video comparing it to 5356, then you would be a the first on youtube to do it. No one else has covered this, and i give up searching haha.

    5356 is kinda like cheating compared to 4043.
    If you'll switch over to a #5 or #6 cup you can use less gas (less $$) and have a smaller etch zone.

    In our maintenance Dept we had both but we always preferred 4043 for all our aluminum repairs… Just seemed to be better for the aluminum alloys and cast aluminums we dealt with.

    Here's a question- for anyone, for 10 yrs I've used a 15 yr old Synchrowave 250, and have always used red tungsten or whatever I had lasting around. Got a Everlast 325 ext a few months ago, it's different, but great. For common joints tees laps corners etc, 1/8" typically, what tungsten is best ? Been using blue lately but just got it in a whim.

    I know it’s 3 months old but a couple of tips.
    4043 rod will bend with a very tight radius compared to 5356.
    5356 will not heat treat ....at least not on a 6061 assembly.
    4043 has been a go to for cast in the 30 years I’ve been doing it .

    I learned with 5356...I'm going to be welding an aluminum radiator neck..so I would guess I should use 4043.. since the 5356 in not for heat.and more brittle...the ,4043 is softer more forgiving less prone to being brittle or breaking...good tip Dusty.....thanks for the great information......am I correct in my opinion on this.?...1.1/4 od round aluminum pipe...at a 45 deg ....
    150 - 200 degrees . acreage temp of a car motor..so I would guess the radiator would get that hot or hotter...so the 4043 would be best..right,?...... Or no.... TY, Don.

    It has to be said that 4043 going, in the end of last welding, toward the corner we'll have less material and much more heating which improve the welding boiling up a little

    I’m always a bit of surprised that guys/girls who weld aluminum mostly have one sort of filler???
    I weld almost every material and for aluminum I have the largest collection of filler rods. It’s just insane how much you have to take to consider when welding aluminum. Of course different sizes.
    But sort of fillers I have 4 different sorts and probably you would need to have 3 sorts of filler.
    I always check 2 questions.
    What is the base you’re going to weld( if you can figure it out)
    And what’s the application?
    And those two questions are a good guidance to choose for a specific filler.

    Can you do a video on welding 6061 aluminum bungs onto cast aluminum? I’m welding AN fittings onto my water necks on my car and I cannot get it to fuse together very well. I’m using 4043 1/16 filler and a purple 1/16 tungsten which I’m pretty sure I need to move to at least 1/8 for each. But a video on that would be awesome

      Step up to 3/32" filler and tungsten. Run a ring of bead first, file that down until the bung sits flush on top of the bead and the run another bead to anchor. It's much easier to weld the bung to a ring of weld than to the dirty base metal. Good luck.

    I am new to Tig welding aluminum, but in AC normal no pulse setting my weld look OK when using 5356, but horrible when using 4043. Like the 4043 have a hard time to melt in the puddle , but if I switch to pulse setting weld with 4043 look much better. I probably do something wrong, but don't really know what. Maybe dipping the wire in the puddle with 4043 should be done differently, really puzzled by that.

    I've always been told since school (awhile ago) told that 5356 is stronger structurally, so incidentally have always used it in my shop. Apparently that's wrong?

    4043 is more for welding cast aluminum to structure aluminum. I always used a 75% argon 25% helium gas. That gives more penetration and gives faster start ups.

    Try being a tanker repair man and ya can convince the boss to buy any 4043 for and of the extruded repair . Granted that 5454 needs 5356 due to 5% to 8%magnesium content .. yes the mag content varies that much. I've used 5151 filler which was exactly 4% for gas tanker repairs. Less soot , plenty strong.

    Select your filler rod based on the material you're welding. You want a similar material. How it looks is irrelevant if it's not the correct filler.

      @@PacificArcTigWelding it keeps all the great features of 4043 with added strength and is also heat treatable as well as not relying on base metal dilution as much for weld strength.
      If I remember right it's like a 20% increase in strength over 4043
      But also benefits in fluidity of the puddle and hot cracking resistance too.

    4943 is a good in between rod used this alot were 4043 is not srtong enough and 5356 may crack....

    4043 handles high temperatures, while 5356 does not. This pretty much restricts 5356 from welding engine parts.

    The term is 5356 is more ductile and is also stronger, No need to elaborate since MidEngineering did a great job explaining their differences. While we are on the subject do you use more than one type of Stainless steel or do you only use ER316L for everything or do you use er308L for most of your art?
