Hiking in Snow to Plane Crash - Scotland

    The Meikle Bin is the highest point, within the Kilsyth Hills and Campsie Fell range, at 570m (1,870 ft) with views across Glasgow to the south, Stirling to the north east and the start of the Highlands to the north west. It is an easy route to follow with well marked paths to the summit and can be completed to the top and back in around three and a half hours, with good weather.
    There are two widely used car-parks to access the Carron Valley area, the main car-park to the east of the reservoir and the Todholes car-park to the west. Either car-park is situated directly next to well maintained gravel tracks that wind around the southern area of the reservoir and lead right up to the final ascent of the Meikle Bin.
    The climb to the summit is easy going until the final 200m where the track ends and the well trodden grass path leads to the trig-point. This portion is a little steeper, so much so that it is worth noting.
    Around 50m from the summit, on the western route, lies the remaining portion of wing wreckage from the ill-fated Fairey Firefly aircraft. In January 1950 the air-craft was making its final descent into what is now Glasgow international airport when low fog affected them and they struck the upper part of the eastern edge, scattering the wreckage across the western slope. Sadly the two crew perished on the hillside and were not found until a few days later after a public search.
    The remaining wing portion is easily found however there is the engine block further down the western edge within the fir trees which I have yet to find.
    The Carron Valley reservoir and the Meikle Bin are great places to visit for those who enjoy the outdoors as there are plenty of well marked tracks and it is easily achievable to reach the summit with great views on clear days.
    Why not check it out for yourself?

    My first experience of hill walking as a youngster was the meikle bin, i could see it from where i lived and always as a kid wanted to walk up it. Great too see a video of it.

      Hey Patrick, the Campsies were my first hillwalking experience too (many moons ago) and finding the plane wing as a kid was so exciting, and still is.
      They're a great wee set of hills and were always my backdrop growing up.
      I never have found the engine block that's said to still be up there, have you?

    This is another place ive never heard of, so thanks for sharing... The story about the airplane crash and the fact that some of the wreckage is still there makes this sound like a place well worth visiting...

      You're welcome. That portion is of a wing with the two large gun ports to the front. The engine was further down the west side of the hill but I'm not sure if it's still there. Some of the wreckage even landed in the Carron river around 400m away so it gives a sense of how large the crash was.
      I'm glad you've liked the video and you should definitely check out the Carron Valley and Meikle Bin.
      Thanks for the feedback too 👍🏼

      Is Johnny's dam Birkenburn Reservoir? If so then I've only ever walked that far up to fish the reservoir and not onto the Meikle Bin.
      Is that the right route I'm thinking of?

      @@AScotsmanOutdoors aye. Was just wondering if that was maybe quicker?
      A few nice trout bouncing abt it the day before . The waters dropped abt 10ft

      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Ah, no I've never climbed it from that side but I do know Birkenburn. It was actually a fair sized trout I pulled from it. All being that it was about 20 years ago now (Wow! Where has the time went).
      Do you fish that much?

  • @iansoutdoorsrecovery7971

    Brilliant that not to far from me and I've not been up there

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před 5 lety +1

      Definitely check it out. It's a wee three hour up and down with only the last part being that steep.
      You'll find wee bits of the wreckage laid around too.

    What car park did you use ? Cheers

      Hi there, I use the Todholes carpark which is on the B818. I find it the easiest route up and down from there and it's a great walk.
      Are you heading up any time soon?
