What a team Ipswich had back then. Such a shame what has happened to them this season. And it showed what a good manager Bobby robson was for them.

@distantvoices Ipswich could have won it in 1981 as well, but fixture congestion probably did for them.
In this season Ipswich, Southampton, Swansea, Man City, Tottenham and Man Utd all had a tilt at the title before Liverpool made a late surge to win it after a poor start.

distantvoices that’s right I seem to remember Southampton finishing runners up one season and then Watford the next season. 80/81 you had villa winning the league with Ipswich runners up, although they were in it right until the last game when they drew with Forest I think and villa lost 2-0 at arsenal but still became champions. So much better and more level before the money took over as you said, such a shame. And watching this game you can see that Ipswich liked to play football. No long balls into the box it’s all on the floor.

@@mrkipling2201 You might be thinking of Ipswich losing at home to Nottm Forest on the last Saturday of the 81-82 season, which confirmed the title for Liverpool who beat Spurs the same day. I think Peter Davenport got a hat-trick for Forest.

Something that happened from time to time: an extended edition of MOTD with, in this case, show jumping. Sometimes, boxing or skiing were also included. My favourite one can be the shorted editions in the 70s because, of all things, the Eurovision song contest.
Of course, this would never happen nowadays. Mainly because the Beeb doesn't have show jumping, let alone boxing.

Curious point but at the end of the MOTD titles it says 1982, though the matches were in '81, as per title. Weird

Hello there, some great classic matches you’ve uploaded to your channel. As a fan of classic ITV adverts and continuity, I was wondering if you own the original off-air VHS recordings from your early 80s adverts, whether its Hovis, the Oxo family, a finger of Cadbury’s Fudge, Look-In magazine or comics... I’d be very grateful if you would find time to upload those inbetween bits of Saturday afternoon telly.

Shame the cameras weren't at St.Andrews that afternoon for Birmingham's 4-0 win v Southampton instead. I was there. Would have turned out to be a better game to televise. Just gets a quick mention in the round-up, as did Maverick Frank Worthington's double and Mark Dennis's latest sending-off!
England's World Cup Qualification for 1982 was back in their own hands after damaging defeats in Switzerland and Norway. Ron's 22 did beat Hungary the following month and went unbeaten in Spain but couldn't beat the hosts by 2 clear goals and were soon...erm...BACK HOME!

They were capable of winning much more.
Should have been Champions in 80-81, then go on to win the European Cup in Rotterdam at the end of this season.
Forest's star was already beginning to fade by this season.

He's no novice is he. Player, player's union representative, coach, manager, football club chairman & football presenter. I think he knows much much more than any of us here & generally he is right & we all have different views when that whistle blows. He worked for itv & then was indicative of MOTD for nigh on 20yrs. That great signature tune & then Jimmy Hill & his chin cheered me up on a Saturday night in the 70s. You might not agree with him but please respect the guy who knows much more about the game than any of us sofa football loungers.
