Dacia Sandero Stepway: Cheap and cheerful?

  • The Dacia Sandero Stepway is a crossover-inspired small hatchback that undercuts most of its rivals by thousands of pounds.
Based on the latest Renault Clio, this 2021 version of the Dacia Sandero Stepway represents huge progress over its predecessor, but is there enough substance to recommend it on more than just its low price? Rebecca Jackson tests the 1.0-litre automatic model in order to determine if there's more to the Stepway than just good value.

    Pros
Undercuts its rivals by thousands of pounds
Improved quality and comfort compared with the previous model
The optional automatic gearbox is smooth
    Cons
More expensive than a regular Sandero
Lags behind the latest safety standards
    Entry-level cars are quite basic

I happen to drive it's bigger brother, the Dacia Duster. Different car you'd probably say. Yet, it too is based on the same Clio platform. And quality wise as well as design and trim wise, it is very alike: Same automatic airco, same level of quality, same or much ilike design, same features like BLISS, etcetera. Same dashboard as well (the gauges and the board computer screen that is). This Sandero even has some improvements compared to the Duster I drive (which is the latest model).
After one year driving this Dacia, I am still amazed by it's robustness, and it's reliability.
Beforte this car, I drove a Hyundai, a volkswagen, an Opel Astra, a peugeot, and an old renault.
Compared to those: If I have to buy a new car again (which will not beany time soon), I will definately consider a new Dacia again. A duster? a Sandero stepway? that has to be seen. But most likely, a Dacia.

After plating and driving many different makes of cars from top of the range to the lowly Kia Picanto the Stepway fares well in comparison. Good overall review, i'll be test driving it soon. While you mentioned the two star ncap, you didn't point out the reason for that rating. It's because it fell down on pedestrian impact detection, with recent higher standards related to no detector/camera as standard on the vehicle to spot pedestrians, not because it had any other major failings. I'm sure dacia will rectify that issue in due course.

One thing I did learn with my last stepway is you need to work the engine more because as mentioned it can be slow on pick up in certain situation's. It means also the driver has to be more involved, look ahead, be ready to change down which gets the Turbo spinning and more power. I quickly got used to that, in fact I enjoyed being more involved. My Stepway is to be made next month. It's been a long wait but worth it.

@ Laurentiu Trifan. But the Clio probably has thinner sheet metal. In addition, softer sheet metal can absorb energy from the impact more gently, that can mean something good too. The Clio is also more expensive. The higher price has to come from somewhere. Some really expensive sports cars have a exhaust like this too. It also has an automatic start-stop system, what should help against this. In a tuning shop or garaj, the conversion to a sidepipes exhaust costs a lot of money.

While you can buy these at 14 thousand less than most basic E cars is it suprising they cant sell E Cars in the numbers they need to.
14 grand buys alot of fuel.

      Since always.
More to the point if you are referring to "why does it simulate classic gear changes", the answer is:
Since all the uneducated drivers demand this "feature" to "feel the car better" and therefore asking car manufacturers to handicap all CVT transmissions.

Good review but don't be fooled into buying a brand new dacia. The earlier versions are incredibly reliable. I have a 2017 stepway laureate, 25000 miles on the clock. (0.9 petrol turbo, 90BHP). I've owned it for 15 months, average 48 MPG and it hasn't cost me anything (apart from tyres and servicing ect). Good space in the boot for a buggy and shopping.
It's a nice drive about town but a bit gutless on the motorway. (I still get about 45 MPG)
It has a nice comfortable drive although it has some body roll in the corners.. But you don't buy a dacia to hit a racing line round an S bend.
From others with a dacia, one common problem is a judery first gear (when setting off) just give it a few more revs to smooth it out.
Save yourself the money and buy second hand.
    :)

Kudos to Rebecca for putting on a brave/professional face in that car. Dacia is the poor cousin of Renault which itself has a reputation for bad engineering (broken engine mounts, gearbox failure in a brand new car, failed ignition timing, flimsy trim) and even worse service backup. I know dealers who will not accept Renault as a trade in. Rather look at Kia, Suzuki or even Haval breaking the stereotype of Chinese cars

I can't help feeling that there's a bit of the 'Emperor's new clothes' in regard to this car. I keep seeing 'built on the Renault Clio platform' like that's a good thing. The Clio is a bag of crap. However, if it makes other manufacturers think again about flashy gimmicks and high spec additions that people don't really need it can only be a good thing.
