I lost my temper with my ex mil (not to mention her darling boy) a few times, but even she knew occasionally when to back off. A few weeks after the wedding, she came up behind me in my own kitchen and like a drill sergeant demanded an apron bc she was going to show me 'how to cook'. As if I hadn't been cooking at least since age 8. I was already chopping veggies for the meal and my back was to her. I said, "Not while I've got this knife in my hand, you won't." She went crying to her little boy but she left me alone for sure. At least she didn't get what my best friend did to her mil. 'Lacey' grabbed that woman by the hair and threw her out of the house entirely. I was always a pretty good scrapper myself, but even I would never try Lacey's patience.

My aunt lived just below my granny’s place down the road and we lived at the very end of the road gravel road that is. Sunday afternoon we’d all meet at my aunts place after church and I believe them tables in the front yard was at least a 1/4 of a mile long in the eyes of a youngun like me and wasn’t a inch left on top that didn’t have the best vittles I’ve ever eat settin on it. It was so wonderful to see with all most the whole bunch of people living on the road was there after church. GOD knows that was some of the best vittles ever crossed my tongue now. Every bit of the vittles home cooked after church LORD I miss them days so much. I guess I could say I’d love to go back to just one of them Sundays and eat till I popped. Maybe JESUS CHRIST AMEN 🙏 will let me experience that one more time Amen 🙏. Thanks JD brought back some great memories for me GOD BLESS y’all Amen 🙏

I love your Granny. Your stories are so much like my Mamas. I wish I had inherited her talent. I cant tell stories but I dare say no one appeciates them more than I do.
Edit: That is so much like what my Granny did when Grandpa got mad n said she always cooked too much. He nearly toppled the table. My brothers about killed themselves trying to eat it all. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The next Sunday when all the family was coming she wasn't cookin a thing. He finally asked her wasn't she gonna cook. She told him when he told her what n how much she'd consider it.
He began back tracking so fast and apologizing and told her he'd never fuss about what or how much she cooked again. And he never did.

Amen to that. Thanks for another great story, JD. Sometimes a person can seem crabby when really they've just had about all they can take right then. If you can, try to silently pray for them instead of making their day even harder. Can't say I'm really good at that, but now and then I try at least a little. At the end of the day, hurt people hurt people.
I'll say this about keeping Sunday as a 'sweet day of rest' though. One person's work is another person's delight. If I have something to do at a sewing machine, I go right ahead and do it. The hum of the motor and the making of whatever is balm to my soul. Yeah, I can hear my stricter ancestors yelling at me for it from the grave, but if I run the machine hard enough it drowns out their voices. :)

Pennyroyal is a medicinal herb in the mint family. It was used for centuries as an insect repellant. It is not recommended for medicinal use now as it has "pyrethrins" natural volatile oils. However, it was used for colds and just about anything else you can think of from colds to stomach aches. It is still used in flea collars, to this day. It wasal so used to induce abortions in the very early stages, however the amounts to do so can be lethal according to literature today. It was well known among women herbalists of the day.
It is a low growing spreading ground cover, it has lavender colored flowers. It is very pungent smelling, and has a sharp minty smell. it grows on a square stalk, as do all plants in the mint family.

Her house at 9:04 looks like my granny’s old house. They finally broke down and put the old I call it asphalt paper on the outside of it. It’s still setting on the big sandstone rock that my dad and his brothers and sisters built many years ago. I’ve slept many a night in the upstairs listening to the rain on the tin roof it washes insulated back then. Granny had feather pillows and a mattress on the old bed springs and it was so warm it didn’t matter how cold it was in that old bed the quilts my granny made and the pillow and mattress full of home picked feathers was warm as could be no matter the temp. LORD I pray when I get HOME to HEAVEN I get to go back just one time and sleep in that old bed with the same pillow on it. It was as close to HEAVEN as I could get from there at the time. LORD I miss the times I had there.
