Back in 2013, the third generation Mazda6 was designed to shake up the market's 'D'-segment medium range Mondeo sector. By class standards back then, it was affordable to run, plus was arguably the most enjoyable contender to drive and the best to look at. For all that, it's still far from an obvious used car choice from this era in this sector. But on paper, perhaps it ought to be.
    History
The third generation Mazda6 needed to be a game-changer - nothing more, nothing less. Vanilla virtues simply weren't going to cut it in a medium range Mondeo segment that until the launch of this car early in 2013, was largely ignoring this Japanese brand. As it was back in 2002 prior to the launch of the very first Mazda6. This was the time before 'zoom zoom', before this Hiroshima-based maker was seen as sporty and forward thinking. Instead, it was known merely for bringing us family cars that were reliable, well equipped - and rather dull. Now it would be overstating the case to say that the very first MK1 version of this Mondeo-sized medium range model changed that perception overnight - but not by much. Sharky-looking and good to drive, all it really lacked was a little refinement and polish.
The second generation Mazda6 of 2007 added that, but at the expense of the characterful, dynamic approach of its predecessor. Hence the need for a MK3 model that would be in every way memorable - to look at, to drive and to own. Like this car? Well, it'll certainly stood out in the kind of company carpark in which vehicles of this sort tend to spend most of their time. It grabbed attention on the balance sheet too, where Mazda's clever 'SYYACTIV' technology delivered running costs able to embarrass those of some potential rivals. There was sharp handling too, across a range of smartly-styled saloon and Tourer estate variants. The original version of this MK3 design was lightly updated in 2016, then more heavily improved in mid-2018. It's the 2013-2018 versions of this car we look at here.

My 2015 mazda 6 has 190k miles on the clock. Engine timing is still perfect like a clock, and it drives like new still. Even a little faster if I'm honest, I feel the engine break in helped probably. It's a Very solid vehicle.

I own a 2016 Mazda6 high output diesel auto. In its seventh year and more than 150,000km on the clock, still going very strong.

Most probably the best review that I ever saw about Mazda 6.
Is is such an amazing car that many people are simply not aware of. It is not the best car, but is definitely the best buy for your money...

Great review. Owner of 2014 Mazda6 diesel manual, 142,000 miles on it now. I had it for 2 years, had one major issue with oil sieve in the pump stuck with carbon build up caused by injector seals giving up, so watch out for than in diesel mazdas, common issue that only cost about 100 bucks to check and change before the oil sum and pump teardown.
Ive got it fixed, both sieve and injector seals and all I can say is car still drives great and very strong!

Diesel model is very economical , totally a different ride if low profile tyres are replaced with 17 " & some decent sidewall . Lots of info about the 2.2 D failing , mazda has fixed 2 of ours after warranty expiry . Currently 5.9 litres / 100 km .

My Mazda 6 2018, engine light turned on a couple of weeks ago, code P0087, and she's got less than 60.000 km. Now she's in service, we're waiting for it to be diagnosed. It's the SkyactiveG engine, 2 litres gasoline, 165 HP. I had higher hopes from a Mazda low mileage gasoline engine.
How do I find out if I have the MkIII or MkIV?

I must be the unluckiest Mazda 6 owner. Mine died at under 50k miles and I've only ever had dealership services.

Hello I’m considering buying a 2014 Mazda 6 2.2L diesel. I’ve heard the engines might not be the most reliable and it’s kind of putting me of buying one. Anyone have any advice on them ?

    • @Toretto16
      @Toretto16 Před 9 měsíci +5

The Problem that the diesel had was fully solved for all the models from September 2015. So try to buy a late 2015 model or younger and sleep godd at night.
However, the best of the best at Mazda 6 is 2.5 Petrol engine. Plenty hp for fast cruisinf on highwat, very quet and refined when drivven normaly, extremely reliable and robust because doesn't have turbo and it doesn't consumpts too much fuel either. But the 2.5 Petrol is the most expensive even when buying used.

Main issue on earlier models is the factory copper injector seals leaking, mixing diesel with oil and clogging up the oil strainer. Left unattended, this can lead to oil starvation and engine failure.
These had to be changed on my 2016 model. 18 months later it's still going strong.
Best advice is to keep an eye on oil levels. Rising oil levels mean oil dilution..a bit is ok.. more is not. Change the oil and filter at 6k km increments or every 6 months whichever comes sooner, don't wait until the manufacturer recommended intervals.
There are some reports of failed head gaskets also at as little as 80k miles.
Some folks have reportedly addressed this with gasket sealer.
Apparently these issues don't afflict the 2018+ models

Thinking about getting 2016 Mazda 6 D2.2 D SPORT NAV 4d 148 BHP. The only concern I have is Nearside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))

The 2 litre petrol would be working . Getting rid of those harsh low profile tyres & wheels is an enormous improvement .
