[7V][4k] Transfer to Heaven? CSX Trains Around Athens, GA 03/25-29/2020

  • Q582-25 was a surprisingly short train but he had special things to tow: Five SD60s were transferred from Norfolk Southern to leasing company PRLX. What's their fate? The torches of scrap yards, storage, or indeed a short line that leases one or another? Only future can tell... While Q582 gets ready to leave Harper Siding near Winder, GA after grain train G179-23 went by, we watch a Sikorsky SH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on its landing approach at Winder Airport. Part of the video is dedicated to the Athens local train A752-29. Going north from Athens to serve the Biomass Power Plant in Colbert, GA he must handle the south-facing industry spur of the plant. To do so, he has to go to the following siding, Howie Siding near Comer, and run around his train, then go south and get the work done. We catch him at Howie, where he has to wait for empty grain train V346-28 (with a rebuilt SD70MACe leading!) and manifest Q580-29 to pass. We then follow him south and watch his actions at the plant in Colbert. Perfectly old-style looking with his three GP engines and a caboose on the rear, he eventually returns to Athens, GA. Enjoy!

    In case anyone was wondering...
    NS #6799 is a former Conrail SD60M.
    NS #6797 is a former Conrail SD60M.
NS #6732 is a former Conrail SD60I. Note the unusual number board font.
NS #6814 is a former BNSF SD60M "triclops" with the somewhat unusual three piece front windshield. Also of note is the unusual number board font.
    NS #6786 is a former Conrail SD60M.

Great Video. 2 or 3 years ago, Engine 5225 on Q580 was a temporary switch engine in CSX Goulding Yard in Pensacola Florida, the one they had was taken away and they used 5225 for a while until a smaller engine was brought in. It was before CSX sold it's track.

Interesting find for those ex-NS SD60 locomotives! I think those CSX SD70MACe rebuilds are becoming more common. That one you caught has a nice Raised Letter K5LA Horn! I got a response from Walthers about my idea for some HO Scale NSC articulated well cars, and they are passing the idea along to their development team, so hopefully they make some.

on a large group of SD60's that were chosen to be scrapped had their dynamic brake hatches removed and left the hole where that equipment once was.
