  • @Light-rk8cr

I use both watercolor and poster color, which has been a great experience. One day i was really bored and my urge to draw hit me, so i started simple, doing still life with pencil ( because i had drawing pencils lying around). I do watercolors too, but it's a tricky medium to control ( in my opinion) and it requires a lot of planning to use, though the results won't disappoint. After i ran out of water color paper, i started switching back to drawing with pencil. But after searching around my house ( i was too lazy to go out and buy some watercolor paper), i found a set of poster colors lying around. Though i can't exactly remember when/why i bought them ( most likely it was for school ), i tried it nonetheless. I use to remember how when i was young, poster was my go to option because of the accessibility ( and because it was the only thing my parents bought). Painting with poster once again, has opened my eyes. I find that poster is an easy medium to control because of the opacity and size of the pigments, it makes it easy to cover up mistakes and you won't have to think ( and worry ) as much. Another plus is that it works on sketchbook paper ( so i don't have to run to the store to buy watercolor paper).
It's good for leisure art but would not recommend it for things like commission art.
Also, mixing a bit of poster into your watercolors makes it look more opaque and make the subject you are painting with it stand out amongst that more transparent watercolor. I did it once for flowers, mixing some poster color white with purple. The result was wonderful.

  • @aleahlrb
    @aleahlrb Před 4 lety +5

I started off using Poster Colors for painting but the set that was given to me as a gift ended up being crappy quality, but I didn't know it at the time. Then I tried watercolors and found that it works great with my art. I recently got interested in more opaque paints like gouache and poster paints and while they're much better to work with for my art, I still have some difficulties with it. It might be because the number of watercolor 101s on CZcams is greater than the number of 101s on the other two mediums. So I've been having some trouble of figuring out my own process, since the two mediums can be used in a variety of ways, for example, going in thick and opaque straight away or doing thin washes and slowly layering. They're unlike watercolor where it's a definite rule to go from light to dark and to work in layers.

I think there are a lot of useful information in the video good stuff . ☺
The only thing i would precise is that usually poster paint are not opaque as much as Artist grade designer gouache cuz more diluted and they change more tone from wet to dry .. i think in the video you said something different also poster paint use glues and other synthetic binders not only Arabic Gum .
Poster paint are on average like a cheap version of gouache used for work that need to be re-printed / scanned and not displayed as they are . They are not made to be light-fast that it's the biggest difference also a lot of things depend on the brand of paint you are using.
In reality in fact you find quite high quality poster paints made by Nicker / Sakura that are "acceptably" light-fast .
The colors are usually not tested with the standard ASTM but if you avoid to use too much purples / violet / rose are pretty safe and will last for long time .
They are also very opaque as you said but winsor and newton designer gouche is even more opaque and dense .. poster paint have a honey consistency.
Also the price can be very high outside from Japan . A set of 18 colors by nicker in Japan is around 7000 yen (50 euros ) in my country they reach even 150 200 euro (160 dollars) for the same set.
They became quite popular thanks to Kazuo Oga so art stores try to speculate ... in the past they were almost impossible to find .

Fascinating 🧐 only using poster paints. Would love ❤️ to use others. We say Acrylic paints in 🇬🇧

I started painting using poster paint and it is really good for beginners. I was able to use it as a watercolor, just add more water. And now I'm actually trying to explore different mediums or art mats. Is gouache a good paint?

I used to use the Faber castle poster colours as water colours . I never knew the difference between them.

Thank you for making this video, I’ve learned a lot indeed. Given the differences between watercolour paint and poster colour, do we need to separate the brushes and the plate when using them? Can we use or mix them when painting?

Hi Mako! I just started Year 10 and this is going to be one tough year with lots of exams and tons of homework. But what I'm most excited about for this year is doing GCSE Art. We are mainly focusing on mixed media art pieces and doing artist studies and studying techniques and producing your own piece of artwork using their style. Your videos have been really helpful for the projects that I'm going to be doing this year in art and have given me ideas of what mediums to use and what effects I could add to my artwork to make it look more abstract and unique. Also, the first project that we're going to be making is ceramic tiles with an illustration of the London skyline on top. We are going to be using slip glaze to add colour to the picture it would be great if you made a video about properly using slip glaze because once in Year 8 when we made Tudor style clay pots and we used glaze to make the pot look bold and colourful and I totally messed it up and wasn't able to complete it, so if you made a video about the proper usage of slip glaze, then I would know how to properly use it without making any mistakes. Love you Mako!! 💙💙

Oh that's fine! No problem. My school actually put together videos on my school's art channel about both the projects and how to make the final piece, but they don't talk about the usage of the slip glaze and the do's and don'ts. Love you Mako!!💙💙💙

In my country poster paint is way expensive than ordinary gouache, so i am better of with gouache then if they're so little in difference?

this was so helpful, thank you. I was just going through a load of art supplies and I found a box of poster colours by Winsor and Newton. I don't know how long i've had them for....I was going to chuck them out as I am using WN Professional watercolours just now. However, having watched your video I realise these might come in useful if i want to do more flat and opaque colour, or for when children come to visit so i'm going to hang on to them!

I recently bought some student watercolours and poster colour. I can't afford gouache, so poster colour is like super cheap gouache. I also used some cheapish food dye to mimic the effects of watercolour inks
