  • What's happening, people! I'm back with another a-ha reaction, and we now move onto their sophomore album Scoundrel Days (1986) and the record-opening title track. Once again, shout-out to those of you who have joined me on this deep-dive (still in its fledgling stage, of course), and let's kick this party off! Cheers!

'They forgive anything but greatness/these are Scoundrel days/and i'm closing to calling out their names,as pride hits my face (ye-a-a-a-)'...The way Morten handles his voice here and the whole delivery is Thrilling. He breaths out both pain and bravery in such a convincing way. Combined to Pal's marvelous, phylosophical, kinda 'narrative' lyrics and its dramatic music wave this one still gives me chills each time i revisit. Some said it's about suicide but no way!.Aha wouldn't do this.I feel it's a critical voice and complain about a corrupting status quo that embraces the demolition of moral values in favour of injustice and scoundrel attitudes and a person's protest and agony to escape this unhealthy living 'enviroment' not bearing anymore social corruption.I remember first times i heard this it was so piercing that made me end in wet eyes.p.s i still notice the detail on his performance where he prolongs the 's'('outside in the pavement the dark makes some noissse).

I admired how they could write such a thoughtful track at the age of about 25.Very sophisticated mature lyrical topic at such a young age. They were diifferent guys at a time that some others were/are 'i love you/ you love me can we connect and have some fun?'Fabulous opener.Should have been a single too.Very good album.I still remember the cover sleeve on the original vinyl album had a couple of small clouds upon it that weren't flat but 'surfaced up' so you could touch them.As you go on with their discography, they start gradually to go darker and less synth oriented.

You could tell that Pal in particular was well versed in classical music and literature…it greatly influenced him both in the structure of notes & chords and in his writing of lyrics too.

When I unwrapped the LP on Christmas Eve of '86 I first thought someone had spilled wax from a burning candle on the cover. xD
Later on in their discography the synths are coming back.

I laughed knowingly when you said "This is a good song to make the point that a-ha is more than 'Take On Me.'" You don't know how many times I've used "Scoundrel Days" to make that point. Those insane vocals alone. But you did pick up on the seeming nod to John Carpenter's more creepy synth work. They sometimes have some really good leading hooks that draw you in and let you know what you're in for.
I bought "Scoundrel Days" the year it came out because for some reason I was having trouble finding "Hunting High and Low" and my life was changed in some small but significant way. Easily still my favourite of their albums, but I say that with full respect to everything that follows. It's just sometimes hard to outdo a moment when that moment was so inspired. I feel the same way about "Music for the Masses" by Depeche Mode. They've done so much good work since, but it's hard to outdo that moment.

Yes, love Music for the Masses! And cheers (should I call you Floyd? I've wanted to give you a shout in some vids before but wasn't sure because your username is seemingly more than one word combined). I'm already loving a-ha's material, and this album, even after only a few tracks, is blowing my mind (see also, my reaction to "Manhattan Skyline"), so I completely get that this album was transformative for you. Really looking forward to going through it, thanks again for all the comments!

@@mattsnider2667 Yeah, Floyd is fine. It's a long story where the Floyd McMondo name comes from. It involves bowling and punk rock. It does look an awful lot like my actual name (my first name being Chris and my last being decidedly Irish). Anyone in the comments section will know me as Floyd, so that probably works for discussion purposes. But I'm also formally introducing myself to you as Chris as I'm glad to know you.

Morten’s voice on here, I love how (at least to me) sometimes he sounds like he is almost becoming unhinged. How he goes from that deep voice to that sweeping falsetto that takes you with it. Wow…. There are so many of their songs that I just get so caught up in the music and their voices that I have no idea what the song is about or the words even. I have to go read the lyrics and see what others say. Sometimes it’s really dark dark stuff and it’s mind boggling to me that it is 😂

If I recall correctly, one critic who probably was quite typical of what a-ha were dealing with at the time (and later), wrote that the boys suffered from delusions of Roxy Music grandeur, and should calm down.
    Or something to that effect.
They also wrote about the icy, wolflike grins of these Vikings adorning too many a teen age girl's bedroom walls.
    Whatever.
    The level...

I came across a years-old comment somewhere else on CZcams, and it's so good that I'm taking the liberty of sharing parts of it. The comment was written by KapteinNemo. In my opinion he hit the bulls eye. I guess the word "appreciate" is not the right word. It should have been acknowledge or something like that. KapteinNemo is probably not English speaking. He might be Norwegian:
"...A-ha has quite a few stunning songs in that "Greatest Ever" category. Scoundrel Days is one, and through proper re-appreciation of the song (during a 6 hour drive by car) , I have realized that it might even be the greatest of their greatest songs....
"And see, as our lives are in the making... We believe through the lies and the hating, that LOVE GOES FREE!". And if you understand these lyrics, you will understand the choice of performing Scoundrel Days at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Contextualized in current times, what A-ha says is "stand back, get perspective, and appreciate what is happening in our lifetime - there are people that, through lies and hating, claim that their love (through their life-style, political system, religion, etc) is the "greatest love". A-ha continues by saying that "We" believe "through" these lies and hating, that LOVE GOES FREE - Love (and even Godly love) does not belong to any particular religion or identifiable grouping, its FREE!(Note that A-ha does not refer to anybody specifically - they keep it "universal" by saying "..and I'm close to calling out their names, ..." Wow, just genius by one of the greatest bands ever! ..."and see as our lives are in the making, that we, with A-ha, believe through these lies and the hating, that love goes free!"
