Clacton-on-Sea: Why all the Hate?

- Here is the short video I made on a recent visit to Clacton-on-Sea. A quick CZcams search brings up lots of hate towards the Essex seaside town which I can't understand, I quite liked it!

My nana used to live in jay wick, we used to walk into Clacton and it was heaven. We used to climb under the fence at butlins and spend the day there. Great memories.
Jaywick used to be such a great place. The beach is beautiful. Sadly it has become run down and desperately needs money put back into the town. I was bought up in Brightlingsea a few miles down the coast. I remember Butlins at Clacton well. 😊😊😊
Hmm, Fish n' Chips,
Making me want some watching this, nice and relaxing viewing just before I go to bed...ZzzzZzz
Can't get more British than this video... sea side town with fish and chips and someone singing wonderwall 😂😂
Clacton looks nice. Went as a child but don't remember it. I like it when you tell us the price of things, then we can all say,
How much?! You look a bit lost without Helen. Hope you are having a lovely time together.
Oh my god it’s gone up so much with subscribers 🎉 good for you. I will sort out a patreon at some point as I have followed you from the beginning and your videos bring me joy and you make me laugh while I’m doing a tough job. The meal was amazing so thanks for that , I really appreciate you and Helen ❤❤ so hats off to you for a fab channel and it beats crappy tv hands down xx 😘
I was brought up in a seaside town myself, so whenever I visit another one, and I fancy a 'chippie', I NEVER go to a sea-front place - they're usually a bit 'meh' and diffinitely over-priced (the rates to set up a business there are always higher) - instead I'll go look down the back streets further in town (usually worth checking out anyway) until you find one where the seeming locals go. There, they are usually much better.
except for geo's (I live in clacton, go there weekly) tates quite good.
Great advice
Great video. I went there every year, as a kid,50 years ago. The fish and chip shop used to be called the dive and was a real treat. Great to see it again, especially since I moved to the us, 20 years ago.
Not sure about nowadays but if you'd have walked into the "town center" and gone just off into the side streets, the pubs are hiding there, off the main drag. I grew to love Clacton because we went to Jaywick for two whole weeks and you had to learn to amuse yourself back then, even when it rained all day. Cheers!
Clacton is 100% better than Southend. It looked very nice, much quieter and a bit more genteel 😂 I so love your honesty and your down to earth Yorkshire approach to everything. 😄
Chip shop curry sauce is the nectar of the gods if they get it right 😋😂
Nah! It has to be mushy peas not curry sauce.
Clacton is an absolute hell hole
My in-laws live at Frinton on Sea, next to Clacton. I really like it down there! (sunnier than Barnsley!)
I watch the adds so you get paid! How's that for being loyal? Love watching you and Helen. Think you're both really funny. Good old British hummer 😅
I was in Clacton yesterday for the air show, obviously much busier than in this video but a little down on the same event last year I think. One of the few times I would go there as local, there's nothing wrong with it but I prefer the beach at Walton on the Naze just up the coast. Would recommend if you get the chance, that has more of a small town feel to it. Also has a pier but not as nice as Clacton's. Apparently Clacton was voted the worst seaside resort by Which? magazine or something, hence the 'hate', but I don't pay attention to such things. Looks like most of the videos on here reached the same conclusion as you, that in reality if you go there it's fine.
I also love Walton beach, it's perfect, doesn't get mega busy, and we treat ourselves to pie and mash after!
It took me 4 years to try and move down here and after spending 1 year down here...
I HATE THE PLACE, I have never been so bored is all my life.
What do people see down here, there's just nothing to do.
Concidering its a seaside town there's nothing to draw you in.
It's the same generic shop as everywhere else, the arcades are a scam, the pier is nothing.
It's gotten to the point now where I literally have NO reason to leave the house apart from going to Morrisons... THAT'S IT
I set a timer and wondered around, when I felt done I cheked the timer... It took me half an hour to see everything Clacton has to offer.
That's the same with most seaside towns. Probably one of the reasons Hastings is suicide capital of the UK
@@terryward1632 it's nothing like how people described it as. Clacton is literally just a name. I'm from Birmingham and every Saturday I would go into the city centre, there was always something to do and something new.
In Clacton it's the same thing every time. also it's like a set for a TV show, you've got the main areas which are clean and colourful.
But when you start to explore out of the main area the place is filthy.
Great place to stay in Weeley in Clacton is BARNFIELDS RETREAT , phenomenal place , pet friendly, beautiful house with stunning rooms and views, balcony and huge garden , great continental breakfast , tons of cereals and berries , croissants , toast and preserves , tea coffee etc… John and Elizabeth the hosts are so friendly ! EXCEPTIONAL ., we had a round bed and OMG the most comfiest bed we ever slept in , Will only stay here … defo try it out
Used to live in Clacton on sea right near the pier i loved it there i love being near the water
It’s been quieter in Cornwall this summer too. We were swamped with visitors when you couldn’t go abroad during the pandemic and prices were hiked to ridiculous levels to take advantage of that. Those prices are still the same, but so many suffering with the cost of living means that only those with loads of money can afford it.
As a fellow Yorkshire man keep up with the pricing!!
I went there when I was a kid we had one of those gorgeous huts.
Was staying nearby last year . Went to Clacton with my daughter and her mate . Pier and amusements was really good . Some deprivation in the back streets , like a number of other seaside places . Looked a lot quieter this year . Problem for me is weather which is always better abroad . Personally prefer to fly off somewhere , but budgets not stretched to it recently
Hopefully this video will encourage people to give Clacton On Sea a go
I've lived here for over a year now and I'm bored to death of the place.
I literally don't have a reason to leave the house.
It's a great place for an easy 'Score' hence it's nickname Smackton.
I loved Clacton when I was there & have now just realised that was 14yrs ago now, but I found it to be a nice peaceful place...🙂
James your videos are brilliant... great content skys the limit ❤.
Thank you 😊
We used to go to Clacton yearly as kids for our holidays. It was lovely. Jaywick Sands gives it a bad name I would think but we used to get the best fish & chips there.
Really glad you like clacton ...all my summers were there growing up
Hi James, thank you so much for posting this vlog, I mentioned in your Southend one that I was looking forward to Clacton, as I used to live there, before moving up north over 30 years ago, Although its changed alot it did bring back some lovely memories, so thank you for that, you made my Saturday evening, hope Helen and you had a smashing time this bank holiday weekend, all the very best to you both, from Nick in Wolsingham.
Don’t seem to have had much sun this year and we are almost into autumn We go to wales and not many people about by the sea side people are very sad
Thank you for the upload guys, much appreciated 👍
Excellent video James. We like watching your solo adventures , as well as those with Helen.
We also like pub reviews, your fish and chip shop reviews and hikes!
Thanks 👍
Hi James, I thought this video was excellent and particularly interesting to hear your views between Southend and Clacton. I live just outside Southend which was lovely years ago but due to the change in society has too many problems, ie drugs, drink and so on. Clacton was my go to resort for the day, but took 50 mins to drive. The beach is gorgeous and is usually full, as I go there on a Sunday. There is a huge drug problem in the town itself.. Thanks for this one, you are really great at this, so very interesting. And yes, us Brits love to hear the prices of everything, its our judging scale! Hope you have a brilliant holiday with Helen 😊
Thank you, I'll keep making them and including the prices 😊
Like i mentioned before i live in southend on sea...but choose to go to Clacton-on-Sea for a day at a seaside resort ,seems to be a lot less trouble in Clacton-on-Sea than southend on sea
I love British seaside towns and culture. I'm not a fan of foreign holidays. I think most people are a bit brainwashed into thinking anything other than a foreign holiday isn't a holiday. I'm not a sun worshipper so some non-descript holiday complex in Spain, Greece or Mexico has zero appeal to me.
@@gazrgazr2394 My colleague was showing off with her Mexican holiday snaps. It turns out they never left the hotel complex so all they saw was the hotel, the pool, the sea and the amenities. She complained about the heat and said the food was 'ok.' Nine hours to get there and nine hours to get back plus all the waiting around time at airports just so they could say they went to Mexico. Holidays have become bragging rights. I went to Filey and absolutely loved it. T shirt weather and when it rained we sat in a cafe and watched the world go by while drinking coffee. Great walks, relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beach, great fish and chips, nice beer, lovely ambience and it's only an hour's drive away. We lost five quid on the slot machines and enjoyed every minute of it and had the most breath-taking views at Bempton Cliffs. The people who slag of British holiday resorts and brag about their foreign holidays are all brainwashed sheep.
A complex abroad is just one option many more options available u can book hotel direct and flight or small family run b and b. Read up your be pleasantly surprised I'm sure.
@@user-qo6lp4wd9t You missed my point completely.
@@WetLettuce-kc2qm I can live with that .just my take on it...
Clacton is too hot dry and sunny for me I don't like the heat but I'm here now I'm near the end of my holiday I had a lovely time though I was boiling it was absolutely madly humid 😮 there were lots of fun things to do but it was ridiculously crowded. I enjoyed my holiday in Iceland MUCH more 😄 but I loved Clacton too much better than in West London where I live I prefer travelling to different countries around the world 😀
Thankyou james I enjoyed the visit ,it looks a lovely little seaside town.❤
I grew up in Clacton during the sixties .... my mum used to give me and my sisters 6 pennies for the amusement arcades whilst she went shopping .... they retired next door at Holland-On-Sea at the turn of the century .... happy days.
I think you’re doing a good job James showing people what different places are like and yeah it’s good letting us know how much certain foods and beers cost, I reckon £5.50 ain’t a bad price nowadays for a pint but like you said everything is expensive now, keep up the good videos 👍
Thank you
£5.50 for a pint at an English seaside resort, or €3 in Benidorm
Love Clayton and Southend essex is quality
Really enjoyed your Vlogs , thank you for taking the time to film them for us all to see , it was a pleasure watching them , best of luck on your travels .
Glad you like them! Thank you
I like that you're honest about places but you don't slag them off just because you can. It's trendy for people to slag off British seaside towns and call them 'shit holes.' People who do that do it to compensate for their miserable lives. It gives them a sense of superiority. Millions of us love seaside towns. We know some are better than others and many have hit hard times but us the public have some responsibility to help them. Without us they will fail and die. You may not realise it but you're helping to revive and sustain these resorts. You go and spend money are you're presenting them to the world. Some people will go as a result and others wont but I feel you're doing something positive. I like that you're honest and only negative if it warrants it.
Great comment, I completely agree 😊
If you're over that way, I'd probably give Clacton a miss and visit Frinton and Walton instead.
100% Clacton on sea 🌊.. Southend was a total dump!
Great upload and I want to go to Clacton now 😂..not a clue where it is mind.
Have a fabulous time wherever you are.
Good morning James, My first film of yours was the Southend jobby and it was a fine visual and audible summary - thank you! Having both liked and subscribed your documentary, I should mention that I last went to Southend some 50 years ago, it has changed! I think you are 100% correct in thinking the reason why such seaside resorts are so quiet the simple lack of money, the cost of everything - a couple of quid to walk down Southend Pier (and back!) £8+ for a few hours parking? Family of two adults & 2 kids could easily spend £100+ for the day without trying, luckily they're not charging to breathe the sea-air (yet) Films are well stitched together and v.well-narrated. Taverymuchlike! VBWx
Taverymuchlike for watching and subscribing :-)
I've watched this and your Southend video and think it's great that you're doing your bit to fuel the British economy.
Just need to get everyone paying cash now.
Hands down Clacton on sea for me James...hope you and Helen are having a great weekend 😊
Hello James, really entertaining video again, as usual. I have to say I think the picture quality of your camera is excellent. Keep up the good work I watch all your stuff.
Don’t think I’d go for a holiday there
cheers James , really appreciate your videos man, thanks for taking us on your journey
You're welcome 😊
We have just spent the day at Weymouth Harbour with the Quayside music festival in the sunshine, great day ❤🎉❤
Those Martell Towers still look impressive. I prefer Clacton to Southend, spent too much time working in Southend. If you go down that part of the world check out Frinton, and also further up the coast Aldeburgh and Woodbridge. Enjoy your weekend.
James, the most likely candidate for what you could see in the distance at the beginning of the video is Gunfleet Old Light House, which is on top of Gunfleet Sands a mile or two offshore. There are several ruined navigation beacons visible in the area as well. The Thames Estuary between Essex and Kent is a nightmare of sand banks for anyone sailing in the area.
Thanks for the info Steve
Walton On The Naze is the best ! And best gorgeous little tea/coffee place is “Jo Jo’s” all freshly made amd Jo and Ian are the nicest couple ever ! THE only place to get a drink or /and food in Walton xx
Thanks for this ..I've never been yet but hopefully will do since lots of the wonderful film by the pet shop boys in the late 80s was filmed on location at Clacton on sea
Cheers James, great vlog…👍🏼
All of ESSEX went down hill I moved further up the UK Southend in 80's was great same with Clacton.
Thanks for the nice video, it looks like a good place. 😊 ooooh another trip abroad…that’ll be fab!! ❤
Great vlog James 👍
My favourite CZcams channel! Top video mate as always. I can’t comment as I have never been to Clacton-on-sea. My partner has when her lad was going to university in Colchester. She stayed in Clacton but felt very intimidated. She stayed at the travelodge and saw some not so pleasant characters. As I say I can’t comment personally…..Smithy
Remember going to The Butlins In Clacton on Sea over 50 years ago not there now obviously.
Yes, it was a fun place to go as a kid! 😀
I'm sure there was an air show yesterday, 25/8 /23 🛩
Clacton is good in summer cheap rides for kids on pier all day ticket was a tenner when i took my kids .. got moneys worth fish n chips always nice
Wow, youre only up the road from me! The air show was on thurs and fri, 25th + 26th, the weather was good and it was rammed! We parked at holland and walked into clacton.
Im in Clacton regularly as my folks retired there 25 yrs ago .
Clacton is a good, nice beach ,tidy , shopping centre is good too .
Walton on the naze is also very nice .
I first went to Clacton in the early 70,s to Butlins as a kid , unfortunately they shut it down and built a housing estate on the land in the late 80,s .
Good video mate 👍
Thank you!
I’m off to Benidorm for the fancy dress fiesta in November! Are you and Helen paying a visit ??
It's so expensive here, and we don't get the weather. That looks nicer than last place.
Hey James. Thanks for the video.really enjoyed it I feel like I’ve had a walk.listened to the sea gulls.enjoyed the fish n chips just like my holidays of bygone days. Thanks James.have a great weekend with Helen. 🌅🍻🙋♀️
Thank you, you too.
Fair assessment of both locations. I have been many times. Well done.
good video , as an expat of the UK I enjoy all the places you go to ,I left 40 years ago so love to see how things have changed and also like it when you tell us how much things cost as i compare them Australian prices, they are all the same ..EXPENSIVE !!!!!
Thanks, glad you like. Everything is so expensive now 😔
The adverts were interesting - Paris National Opera! And I loved the lady checking the soles of her shoes when you left the bar!🤣
7:36 exactly, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 😂😂😂😂
You know I took myself for a holiday last summer to Lowestoft which no one had good words about & local beaches.south beach was lovely.obviously some places have changed alot but I had a wonderful time & came back all refreshed & made friends.
Sounds good, I plan on visiting there soon
@@bythecurb also southwold is very nice x
i think the hatred comes from some of the housing, job opportunities and that sort of thing. Plus its close to Jaywick. Its nothing to do the beach as I spent many happy times with my parents a little north of clacton in Walton, Frinton and of course Pakefield on the beach there. Loved it......cricket on the beach and taking catches diving into the water was awesome. Happy memories.....
Thanks James, that was fun. I haven't been to either, either, but I agree with your choice 😃💜
I have never been to Clacton or Southend but I thought Clacton looked quite good. Lovely long promenade. I can see myself with my rollater having a stroll down there. LOL I'd prefer the quiet end though. The view out to sea was lovely. I've been with you since the beginning too and it is (as someone has already said) fantastic to see just how many subscribers you have now and also how your confidence has grown. This is definitely your thing, taking us on different adventures and hopefully with Helen joining you too, to keep you smiling. I was a bit worried that you were going to spill that curry sauce down your tshirt. 😅😂. All the best. See thee. 😊
I love Clacton and well worth a visit the seafront is very well cared for by the council
Thank you so much 😊 I feel a lot more confident now filming in public and I'm getting better at filtering out the crowds!
Clacton on Sea is much better 😊 but I am biased from many moons ago. Still got the huge plastic ice-cream which must be older than me 😂 sweet place
Kool video lol, it freaks me out aswell the gaps between the boards lol lol 😂
Looks nice thanks for taking us with you - we’re heading overseas in September 😂 can’t wait !! 😂 xxx
£13.80 for fish and chips.. omg.. up here in t'yorkshire, I get flustered when it gets over £8 lol.. I do prefer less busy places so that might be a nice place to visit for next year.. thanks for the video
They're getting so expensive these days. It's bad enough when I'm on my own but for a family it's just too much!
Unfortunately a lot of these seaside towns are expensive and it’s probably cheaper to go all inclusive for a couple of weeks abroad and more chance of sunshine
I go on holiday every year to a beautiful place in Scotland called Findhorn been going for 20 years and it used to be quiet but the place is really busy now good for the small businesses but brings other problems, litter, traffic, people camping on the beach and lighting fires but it’s still a beautiful place and had I been younger I would have moved here
Go try it for yourself and I am sure you would be impressed, there’s not a lot to do here but the sunsets are amazing and miles of golden sands if you’re looking for a relaxing holiday try it🏴🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍
Quite agree haddock better than cod great vlog once again have a great weekend hope there's not too many cars about plenty on the roads up here in scotland
Enjoyed the video, was nice to see as ive never been there, like you say, you just can't beat the good old british seaside
Flag flying at half mast was it for the death of British beach holidays 😂😂
I subbed after seeing your Southend video now I'm up to date.
Hey james wetherspoon do hand batter there fish and chips its quite nice and the drinks are cheaper too❤
Clacton, holiday destination in my youth,Steel Stella, roller coaster on the pier.
I've just stumbled upon your channel by accident, it's good to see places I've never been to before, I hit the like button, and subscirbed to your channel.
Thank you, glad you liked it
Thanks for uploading. It was a good video. Clacton definitely looked the best out of the two. But I don't think you can beat Northern seaside towns. Blackpool, whitby, Scarborough and Brid.
Cullercoats, Tynemouth. Seaton Sluce,Seaburn,all nice.
I live near Skegness and all these eastern seaside towns are lovely. Mablethorpe is nice but it's full of old people. Like Eastbourne, God's Waiting Room.
@@Jack_WarnerI love Mablethorpe... Lovely little place... Remember the vast golden sand, donkeys, cafés & seal sanctuary...!👍
@jackwarner. Good old Skeggy.
@pam164 I agree. I live next to Seaton carew.
Brilliant as always regards Howard from Cyprus
Thanks Howard
Glad u do the prices.its interesting to no around the country.👍
Looks a nice place , nice to see good looking sand , thanks James 😊
You're welcome
I was born in Clacton in the great freeze of 1963, in a nursing home a few roads along from the station. It was a beautiful place to grow up in & in the 1960’s/70’s people would dress up in their best clothes just to go shopping. Fast forward to today, yes, it’s gone downhill to a certain extent mainly due to the druggies & drunks that mainly frequent the town centre. I left Clacton when I got married at 21 but popped back frequently to visit my parents up until their demise between 2008-2015 & saw things gradually change for the worse in various ways. Clacton itself is wonderful but the people themselves have changed. The bridge over the road that leads to the pier, my father took a photo of my mother holding me on the bridge as a few month old baby, I still have the photo.
Thanks James, enjoyed that.
Its also interesting to know how much you paid for things, so please don't stop doing that.
I'll keep doing it
Hi James
Thanks for the vid I've never been there so it's good to get an idea of what the place is like
The fish and chips looked good.
I won't be going to Clacton in rush though.
I think it's a good idea you do tell people the prices of beer and food.
Also I can understand how it may make you feel ( a little paranoid) when doing the filming I'd say don't worry about it in the slightest as your not causing any problems at all and multitudes of people are doing exactly the same thing day in day out
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I have some more similar videos coming up
Nice vid James 😊😎👍
Used to go to Walton frinton with kids for years when we lived in Braintree. Now up in Worksop miss being able to get to coast in half an hour .
Cleethorpes is only 50 miles from Worksop. It's only an hour and a bit by car. That's not bad. I had a friend who lived in the middle of America. A drive to the coast for her was a 16 hour trip and that was without stopping.
Great video James I do like it when you go off on your own encourages people to do the same and when your talking to the camera imagine your facetiming Helen 😊
I do that sometimes :-)
The fish and chips and curry looked nice
Can't wait to see what you have done this weekend hope your both enjoying it x
Thank you, we're having a great time 😊
Cheers for that James ages since I have been there. Think it's nice to know the prices mate, everyone likes to hear about a bargain and if it's expensive then we can have a good moan about it 😉
New subscriber, as a kid from SE London my parents would take me and my brothers to many seaside resorts so it's nice to see how they looking now days, my dad use to always quite like Ramsgate where i'm now currently living, because how the direction the sun hit the main beach.
Margate and Broadstairs are only a bus ride away .
Thanks for the sub, I plan on visiting all those places 😊
I went there for a week a few years ago, and I regretted having to return home to the West Midlands. Very friendly town.
Hi, Just joined your channel and am loving it so far, I have to say this one out of the two is my Favourite, My vote is Clacton-on-sea. 👌👌
Thank you and thanks for subscribing 😊
Another ace video sir 🎩
I lived in Clacton for 20years…it’s a great place, but hubby wasn’t so keen….so we moved….great video, thanks.x
We visted clacton a couple of years ago and stopped in a greek hotel and it had cleaned its self up from about 6 years previously. All in all not a bad place we thought. Jaywick is only down the road from the hit series that was on tv.
Clackton on Sea looks great James, ive not been but now would like to go... one day buddy, keep up the vlogs and enjoy your bank holiday weekend away with Helen, see you both soon buddy, take care, Alec
As a child in the 80s, I remembered going down into a chip shop with my parents. The one you went into was the one. It looks the same next time I go I'm going in 😂
There was a Butlins . Every year in the fifty’s and sixtys I had my holiday there as a child. I thought it was a great place.
