This is a fairly common build but here's my take on the DIY Roof Rack Rod Storage Locker.
We are taking a 4 month road trip next year and my rods wont fit in the bed of the truck or the cab. So, this was about our only option.

I was very nervous putting my brand new beach cruiser on this rack. czcams.com/users/postUgkxG6JIgwJhur8_Rg8UeQ3EmePzi_wSncL8 But after reading many reviews I decided to get this one and take a chance. When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...

Even though it might look great with stickers and tackle manufactures on these, it's often better to leave them without to deter thieves, or put a sign saying tent poles on it. In hot climates like here in Australia Ive had issues from foam grips and reel seats on rods in black tubes that heat up incredibly high here, so leave them grey in hot sunny locations. I would recommend glueing the ends to the tubes so you don't have screws sticking out on the inside of the tube rubbing against rods, or use foam inserts at each end for the screws to go into. Anyone interested to see whats in the tube can quite easily cut these in 20-30 seconds so still be mindful where you park.

Those are handy. Getting paint to stick to pvc pipe for any length of time can be tricky. There's a product sold a many professional paint stores that is a primer for painting pvc pipe. It's essentially part glue part primer. I buy it a Kelly Moore paint stores but I think Sherwin Williams carry it also. Works pretty well at keeping paint on and not flaking or chipping. Good luck on your trip.

I like the video but I feel that the although strong metal lock end caps seem like a good idea, just unscrewing the screw and pulling pretty hard on it will defeat those. I wonder if they make a plastic version because you would think that it’s weaker but using pvc glue would melt the two surfaces together making a stronger bond.

Or just unscrew the nuts on the U-bolts and take the whole thing and toss it in back of your van, if you want to steal it. Sometimes I find it funny how much effort people put on securing storage outside of their car, but then its not securely attached to the car. It's easier to take the rods out overnight, if you're parking somewhere not-that-safe
