Where Do Medical Words Come From?

- The Art of Medicine: Chapter 1. Morphine, meningitis and the myth of medical words. Beneath our jargon lies beauty.
This video was inspired by a Twitter thread I started with some of the featured words but it was quickly added to by dozens of people to whom I give my sincere thanks - I used a lot of your suggestions and you made this video possible. In fact I had to choose a small proportion of my favourites but there is enough for a whole lot more.

That was the smoothest sponsor transition I've ever seen
Agree. You should watch ElectroBoom. he's the guy that constantly shocks himself but he's actually a fine electrical engineer. He always does the sponsor transitions with a great amount of dry humor
@@r0manovic I watch his videos. Yes. And the confetti really adds another layer to it.

Doctor Francis, you just gave my students more "aha" moments in 15 minutes than I managed to do in a week of anatomy lectures. Sending a big thank you from Tokyo!
Then your students didn't get to learn a proper amount of Greek and Latin in high school.
@@rogerwilco2 No one is taught that tho.
Definitely saving this for the next time I teach medical terminology. Way more interesting than me listing the definitions of various prefixes and suffixes for 4 hours.
"What do you do for a living?"
Orthopedist: "I straighten children."
I don't know why that made me laugh so much 😂
It’s a pity you can’t give a standing ovation on CZcams because this definitely deserves one 👏👏
recently ive been seeing random videos with "appluase" as an option, so maybe soon we can! (Sorry im responding to old comments, just now learned about medlife and watching all his videos)
@@lightningblaze6449 Sadly it looks like that feature didn't get implemented... (Sorry im responding to old comments, just now learned about medlife and watching all his videos)
There is a simple elegance of beauty to this collage of language and history. Thank you, will share.
As someone who was "blessed" with Latin and ancient Greek at school I wish our lessons had been this entertaining and interconnected.
I'm not sure how long you sat on this script, but it was worth every second. THANK YOU ❤❤❤
Let me guess: you're greek
@@morgoth_bauglir Austrian actually.
@@paraboo8994 Really? I didn't know you could take these classes over there. Here in Greece, ancient greek is mandatory for all of middle school and, combined with latin, a mandatory subject for those who choose the "humanitarian" (archaeology, philosophy, history, law etc) study path
@@morgoth_bauglir I went to a humanist grammar school, so pretty much the same idea. There's not many schools like that though and they're not popular.
@@paraboo8994 Yeah, I get that. These classes cna be pretty boring/overwhelming if you aren't interested in that sort of thing

Yes, but without the existential crisis.
I see this video basically as a mix of "10000 Years of the Scientific Method" and "How to make a human".

As an English teacher this has been an unusually fun episode!
Also, low key the most impressive bit is where you just slipped "apposite" into a sentence like it weren't no thang 😊👍
You made me panic just then in case I'd used it incorrectly, thankfully google tells me I'm ok. Delighted an English teacher enjoyed it! I have always loved the richness of our language.
haha that happens to me all the time. In fact despite having used "apposite" i don't know how many times in my life i still googled it real quick before submitting that comment 😅
You can never be too sure!
Word formation and etymology are imho the most satisfying parts of linguistics, I've had so much fun learning it, it's a shame that it's been studied to death and I can't write papers about it :(
Edit: on the other hand I could always study some obscure siberian dialects and research that part of them >
Sk0lzkiy
I saw of all things a contestant on a television game show who specialised in etymology and fell in love with him while the others attempted ridicule and bawdy humour. No wonder great minds in history have sometimes corrupted to exploit others.

As a Med student, I feel I have to see this video once a day, for the rest of my life
Ha ha ha, when I was in my first year of school I had a little "cheat sheet" with most of the nouns, prefixes and other basics that I used to carry around with me. So when an instructor would use a word I'd quickly understand and be able to understand and ask/offer answers to questions. I got a reputation as a whiz but it was just a good prep game.
Just got home from the hospital, this is exactly what I want to watch when I'm tired.
I'm seriously contemplating creating multiple CZcams accounts, for the sole purpose of liking this video more than once.

I failed my exams for the semester, and the self doubt had begun to ever so slightly rearing its head. Then this video came along, and it really helped me remember why I chose what I chose in the first place. Amazing video as always. Thank you.
As someone who loves the origins of words, this is brilliant.

Your comment shows how ignorant you are. All the so called diseases were on their way out before vaccines. Even the ones there were no vaccines for. I know most of you have been conditioned to not question but for the sake of future generations please find some common sense that may still be lingering in your body somewhere. This is a worldwide attack on all of by those who own the pharmaceutical companies. They make billions off the medication for all the auto-immune conditions their vaccines are causing. Babies are dying. Please wake up.

what an incredible ad transition I love this channel
This was magical. Your writing is everything. Smart, humorous, paced and very well spoken. I missed out on Latin in school, they cancelled the class the year I was going to take it, so what I know is from crossword puzzles and cheezy movies with frat houses and of course, osmosis
Awesome video, love when you upload. On a side note: A wild Chubbyemu has appeared! 😂
Thank you for this. I worked in Radiology for 25 years and retired about 10 years ago, but I still speak "medicalese" when I go to the doctor. They are often shocked and don't understand me at first because they don't expect this from an old(er) lady, but then they catch on and it can be quite fun. Actually I found Brilliant before I found you, mainly for the computer science and chemistry, but didn't see the medical parts so I'll go back and look again. Keep 'em coming.

My brain exploded and English is my native language.
@@waynesanford2869 so it is not a problem for me, thanks 👍
Dude, that must've took some time, to come up with that rhyme! The lyrical verbosity arouses curiosity from those without medicality infused within their learningisity! The profession you're akin to holds a cohort within whom Latin is just a pattern of vernacular specificity, as opposed to those for whom "like" is an arbitrary addition, like when like you can't like find the right word for the term for like what you'd like to discern and discover for your brother or other person in your peer group. I am amongst the hoi polloi who discover and enjoy the articulate and accurate usage of the verbiage or the attractive annunciation of the vocabulary on occasion that passes by the labia of those of a medical persuasion. It's like, proper good innit? You know exactly what and where thems types be talking about!
But when the English language is adapted and achanged to nonconforming parlance from the rules and guidance that we were all once taught, be it "bruvva" "gunna" or "thot" it's a chance to parlance in the modern terminology who's history and etymology and be traced linguistically to perhaps somewhere in italy, who famously historically make really damn good coffee.
I'm betting you have a source of decent Espresso in your life, no?
A veritable masterpiece
My medical terminology class opened a whole new world for me. This video was a good one.
Me too. I just love that the words are unambiguous, they mean exactly what they say if you take them apart.
Three years of Latin, 4 years of medical school, 3 years of residency and I still learned several new things. Excellent presentation. Thanks! Keep them coming!

This is probably the first youtube video I've seen with a useful segue into the sponsored part. Excellent video, thank you :)
Holy shit that sponsorship transition was insaaane... Smoothest one I've seen yet 😀

That was brilliant. So smooth, so satisfying. Thank you.
Fabulous. I can imagine this was an awful lot of work, well done.
I find the more time you spend with these terms the more you absorb unknowingly. I have quite the plethora of autoimmune diseases and I’ve picked up a lot. It’s quite empowering to understand what a doctor is telling you, and to be able to ask insightful questions, so bravo, and thank you.
