up to this point, ive ardently watched your daily successes and struggles. no matter what you two do, i always find myself in admiration of your work - creativity in filming, desire for cooking hearty meals, tending to your animals, determination in building with your own hands, enthusiasm to keep learning, the honest and gentle way you communicate to us and each other and most of all, the passion you both have for the daily activities you do bring forth light which bounces off the screen. i guess living a lifestyle you both desire has given you genuine happiness. do continue persevering, it's admirable and lovely to witness!! im so pleased to have found your channel. it's inspiring. you both have lovely personalities. thank you for sharing your lives Tova and Mathias. :)

Gelatinous?! You know some good words, don't you, Matthias? That is not a word that many Brits would ever use. By the way, two quotes of yours that I remember, 'we don't know what we are doing, but we do it anyway' and,'there's always going to be something to do' are marvelous and display an excellent command of the wonderful English tense system. Quite good philosophy, too!

I live in Austin, home of Franklin BBQ and was pleased to see you referencing their book. People here line up at 6am in the morning at Franklin's, which opens at 11am, and purchase amounts are limited. Though we have many excellent BBQ restaurant's here, Franklin's is considered the best. It certainly is my favorite. They specialize in beef brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, bbq turkey breast and sausage(beef and pork). By the way, I am a big fan of your vlog. Keep up the good work!

We built our own place from the soil up. We disasembled a lot of sheds to get the lumber. Took us 4 years but we did it. And had 3 kids

Smoked and grilled meats are huge in the U.S., especially in the S.E. region. We have a combination grill and smoker. My husband recently smoked a spatchcocked turkey, and it was divine. You won't be sorry when you get one! There's a restaurant in our area that puts peanuts in their coleslaw. It may sound odd, but it's a wonderful addition.

    Another wonderful episode.
In the States, we too call that a picnic roast. If you're thinking about a smoker, starting small with a home made barrel smoker, aka drum smoker, aka UDS (ugly drum smoker) will get you in the game, at a very low investment. If built nice and tight, it can be made to hold temperature for an extended duration, with little fuel (wood) and attention. I have the Weber Smokey Mountain 18", it's a nice unit, easy touse andbig enough to cook lots of food. Eventually, you can build a larger unit. Once hooked, no BBQ lover settles for only one smoker. It's like axes, you can never have too many;>)

it will be easy to build your bbq device. you both are so young as your wife says 10 year plans....lol that was a great interjection at the perfect point. I find your channel to be so soothing and enjoyable. I watched people build a typical Finnish log cabin and they put moss and some grasses but mainly moss they picked from the forest between the logs for insulating property and a very thick layer of sand on the ground beneath the cabin before they put in the floor. in the attic portion they put in sand and sawdust mixture for insulation. I would never think of the sand below and above in the attic but the attic sand was mixed with sawdust. hope this will help with some of your planning....from Laurens, South Carolina, USA. the builders cut the excess that overhangs and it goes back in the basket of moss and grasses for the next row of insulation between the logs.

Mmmmm, Your pulled pork recipes must be added to these Vlogs, hehe. I agree with Tova about the taste TV, yum yum. I wondered if you do anything like at the farm gate sales or sales from your Fäbod. Both of you make so many wonderful things that everyone would buy here. Tova's coleslaw would be a hit here, people would love to buy it. A friend here sells dinners at their farm from meat from their animals, it's usually an outside affair with everyone seated at a great big wooden table, candles, water glasses, a simple meal with story telling. You have a wonderful location as they do, for such dinners. I look forward to seeing how you both market your wealth of skills.
    Your evening meal looks wholesome.
I love how your families come to help you both with your goals, It's the same here with my family. Your Brother and Father are super skilled and helpful.

You have a very nice place, you two are a loving couple and I think you were wise in your choice of each other, and you place the near same importance in the way you are establishing your Homestead with the traditional ways, doing things as you can and building yourselves a more convenient home. Sometimes it seems like you are sad because you cannot obtain all of what you want when you want it, but it is the same for a lot of people life is a struggle but when you want something bad enough you will get it, but the journey if it is too easy you will not appreciate it as much, I think you are doing a very good job at it, keep up the good work. I really like those homemade big log wood handle hammers those look so neat and you have different ones for different jobs, that is so cool! And you can get a file, a hone or other tools to sharpen the slicer cutter wheel best to see if you can find the manufacturer and how they recommend to sharpen the cutter wheel because of the material the manufacturer selected he would know best how the best and easiest method to maintain the cutting edge. Whatever method do it carefully they are sharp, here most cutters are operated with electric motors and the cutter is a disc with no teeth and they can be sharpened in place with a tool that hones the edge to 'dress' it up. You guys are very interesting to watch your progress.

I don’t think you like the term mud room. Basically what it means is when you come into the home. Take your “muddy” shoes off in the mud room. Once they dry they can be cleaned off. Sometimes there is a sink in the room too. And hooks for coats or jackets. It’s a very helpful room and it isn’t full of mud like the name makes it sound. I love watching your vlogs. Thank you!

I’m still catching up on your Vlogs and may have missed in the past if there is a comment, but have you considered a recipe book to sell? There have been so many things you’ve made like a meat dish with a creamy sauce that looked so good. And in another video you poured a cup of tea, what kind of tea? Simple things like this in your book with photos of your homestead. Yes, I would be the first to buy it!! Thank you for your time. Just splendid.

That is a great idea! We have some thoughts about making a nook of some kind. We'll see when that will happen :)

thanks for sharing. a suggestion, you should shorten your videos that way you can make more of them.dont get me wrong i love the long videos but it just may help out your view count ect earning you more money. I promise you should film more stuff even if you think its boring chances are it is very entertaining to us, your followers. You guys are amazing thank you for sharing and take care of each other.

Yes we know, but its so hard sometimes to make them shorter when all the material are connected, hard to find a place to divide the content in a good way, but we will try ;) Thank you so much Cory!

You are very kind to be thinking of how to help them. You may be interested to know that there is a Canadian who is also building off grid. His videos are the same length or longer. He is closing in on 1 million subscribers.
When you have such excellent content as Talasbuan, the length is icing on the cake. It gives people time to relax into the experience.
With that said, if they needed to shorten them for their own reasons, I would fully support their decision and be happy with whatever they could manage.

Hello Marta, Thank you so much! Iron pots are the best, you are totally right! We are making the front room to the house, we have more room to build here, then we gonna move it and fasten it to the house! Have a lovely sunday!

Thank you for another wonderful video. Your drone photography certainly adds to the feeling of what your little farm is like; it gives us an idea of how things are laid out. Your log work is fantastic-such tight joints. Do you add moss for chinking? Are you building the entry/ windbreak separately from the house and then assemble it again at the house? I wasn’t clear about that. Beste Hilsen fra Alaska!

    • @Talasbuan
      @Talasbuan  Před 5 lety

Thank you for your kind words! Yes, we will add moss between the logs when we build it up in the right place. Yes, it is more room to build where it is now instead of in front of the house. There's other reasons as well but it is easier for me ro explain in a video so I will do that in the next vlog :) /Mathias

Very interesting. Another homesteader I follow, who's in Arkansas, USA built a brick oven. I am very interested to see whether you build a smoker/barbeque/brick oven. I am working my way through your play list so I'm on on 2019 so far... :)

So, is it just in Scandinavian DNA that you know how to work with wood so beautifully, or did you have to train somewhere?
