The main selling point of a new Falcon, and the main reason why BMS still is a thing (next to BMS's incredible dedication of course), is the fact that BMS (Falcon 4) has a proper dynamic campaign. When it comes to pure aircraft / systems modelling DCS is probably leaps ahead by now - and it offers more than "just" the Viper.. Microprose has huge footsteps to fill here, with competition that pretty much mastered the art of aircraft and avionics design. Obviously, i wish them the best of luck, but will be a tough one.

There was no mention about Falcon 5, was it? MPS only assured that they wont intervene with BMS which is reassuring since they are doing really good job. The good thing about MPS getting the rights to Falcon series is that they will complete the missing documentation for the older titles (the manuals for MIG-29 and Hornet are missing from Falcon Gold release).
Fun fact - Falcon series was never truly Microprose title - it was always the work of Spectrum Holobyte which at one point (after Falcon 3) bought out Microprose, and since Microprose was considered as more recognizable trademark, Spectrum Holobyte basically renamed themselves for Microprose.

"wonder if the developers know what they are getting themselves into?" I don't think so. Dynamic Campaign like Falcon4 is not commercially valide. Takes Toooooooooooo much adjustment, development, debugging and compromises ... I don't think that payed developers could ever sustain such an effort. Truculently, DCS is not able to host such a dynamic camping, tooooo many things to enhance, fix and debug before considering a DynCamp. Starting with IA behavior, and ATC ... no need to consider a DynCamp as long as they don't have a descent ATC control by AI, and flight AIs able to manage trimming and fuel more efficiently. (and I don't even talk about the real time engine that is currently impossible in DCS at this point).

I started with Falcon 4.0, which I happened to see in a gaming shop in Germany, in September of 1999. Actually, the previous week, I saw the F-22 Raptor by Novalogic (IIRC that was the name), and was already wowed to thy kingdom come, then the next week, I saw Falcon 4.0!!! I just had to get it.
I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming because I came from Africa, just a week prior, and In Nigeria, I already had the F-117A Stealth Fighter 2.0 given to me by a friend.
I read the 500+ pages of the manual back to back several times, and because this was in Germany, I had the German version. But MicroProse shipped me the English manual overnight, so I had both versions. I'll never forget this.

I also played the falcon series from the 80's. They probably didnt have the copyright for Falcon 4.0 Allied force but it was a great "stable" version with 2 or three campaigns that is still in my computer. The good part about it was if you modified one file in all campaigns you could fly , all fixed wing aircraft modelled in the game, tornadoes, c-172's, F-22's etc with the default f-16 cockpit and it really opened up the game for multi-combat ops, caps, transport flights with cap support . It also had ATC that scored your airport behaviour and take off and landings. The only thing it didnt have was carrier ops. Thats why bms happened. Allied force is a great game and a stable platform (BMS not so stable) that you could run on your own server and stop and save and run again later (or have a server that ran 24/7)and make your own missions with as well. The best part of it was that it had a dynamic continuing campaign model that was adjustable that the AI fought against you and you had to continually pump missions into it to stop them advancing. Hopefully the new falcon 4.0 will have all the dynamic campaign elements that Allied Force had.. fingers crossed. I also fly DCS now. Ive flown bms and although AF is not as good technically as bms , its stable and has a great camdpaing that just keeps on coming at you . i love it but people dont fly it anymore. still good for single player and a rank mode with medals. hopefully this new version will encompass all of what falcon 4.0 allied force did.

I own every Falcon product since (looking at the binder for 4.0 on the shelf behind me right now). I've since moved on from this title and into DCS. I must admit, this announcement doesn't really get me all that excited. There's certainly potential for excitement - lord knows we (the consumer) need competitors in the space to drive innovation and speed of delivery. I'll definitely keep my eye on this. If this announcement just means they're taking BMS and building on top of it, I don't see how that changes the competitive landscape. If they're building a brand new platform using the Falcon brand, we're years away from seeing anything approaching "competitive" to Eagle Dynamics or even MSFS. At least that's how I see it based on the information I've seen.

Anyting cockpit related, I play exclusively in VR and I've come to the following conclusion regarding BMS, DCS, IL2 GB and X-plane 4:
BMS is (at the moment - let's see what microprose brings to the table) the most complete F-16 simulator. It exceeds DCS in the gameplay department. Better AI, the ATC is barebones in DCS compared to BMS. The systems are study level material. In short; BMS is superior to DCS as a platform.
Before DCS world was a thing, the first stand alone full fidelity module that came out by Eagle Dynamics was the A-10C, and thereafter the Ka-50. Those are avionics and systems wise comparable to BMS. The depth of the other modules (not taking into account the warbirds of ww2) are not BMS material.
IL-2 Is a great experience. It's not as hard core as DCS, but it comes close. It offers a level of immersion that DCS hasn't managed to replicate. For example, German voice overs for the Axis forces are non existent in DCS. IL-2 Yankees speak yank, Germans speak Kraut, Russians speak Russki and the Brits are as tally-ho and jolly-good-show-chaps as can be.
X-plane 4 scratches my non military itch and besides being very modular and moddable, Microsoft gets my boycott. Regardless of how beautiful or good their product is. Gates (or affiliated) doesn't get a cent from me.

I bought Falcon BMS a year or so ago for the dynamic campaign feature but found the out-of-sim UI just too clunky. I’ve spent years getting to know the clunky DCS interface (I mean when you’re not in a plane) and BMS was much worse.
I use a 4k monitor so the layout and fonts are barely readable and, as I understand, BMS has had to layer their UI elements over the top of the original (basically it’s not really their fault) so even if I could easily read it, I’d still be tearing my hair out. I know that the menu part of the game is old and part of Falcon 4 but I just didn’t have the heart to go through the frustration of another poor UI. Also, as I work with 3D graphics, I find the current graphics painful - although I was prepared for a step down from DCS, this combined with the UI just pushed me over the edge and I’ve only loaded it maybe a dozen times. The good and improving look of DCS means I was prepared to put in the effort to learn the awful main menus etc. - unfortunately Falcon BMS was a step too far.
With Microprose buying it, I can’t wait for an update with modern graphics and a better UI. I’m hoping for great things.

    • @VonDrinkoften
      @VonDrinkoften Před rokem +1

You can increase the font size of the UI in DCS from the options/settings menu on the main launch screen.

@@VonDrinkoften thanks! If I’d thought about it, I suppose I should have looked for an option like that. I might have another quick look, it’s still installed. And it’s not as I made a grand decision to not play it, just that I never have the enthusiasm to learn a less than intuitive interface when I sit down to ‘fly’. I don’t want you to think I’m completely down on BMS. The dynamic campaign sounds so good, it’s after reading about it that I bought the app and downloaded BMS. Which is another thing, with Falcon 4 at about 5£/$, it was practically an impulse buy. It’s amazing that so much is offered for so little and I hope the new arrangement gives the BMS guys, who I believe have mostly done their work as a hobby, a chance to get some reward other than the appreciation of the players.
IIRC, Microprose were the creators of M1 Tank Platoon in the early 90s (?). I loved that game. It was the first game I’d bought for PC, I believe, about the time when it became possible to play even a CGA level graphics game on a PC.
So Microprose is a name to conjure with, to me anyway!
EDIT - crap, I didn’t realise you were talking about the DCS screen fonts, I assumed you meant Falcon BMS. I guess I wasn’t clear in my overwordy post. Yes, I have expanded the DCS menus to 150%, I can read them fine. My objections in DCS are to the very average usability of the menus and structure of the sim outside the game. Love the planes, though. I have almost all of the modules and all of the maps.
