The Allen wrench is for adjusting the spacing on the key.
Mine came with a high end manual too.
I ordered the Edgewood package last week! I'm looking forward to working with the KH-1!!!
Howdy All!!
The thing that gets me is that you apparently have to set the paddle to reverse to properly use it. Judging from the design of the paddles I cannot understand why that’s a thing.
Can you reverse the iambic in the menu? I didn't look
@@HamRadio2 yeah. That’s a standard setting found in pretty much every transceiver. I’m a bit weird in that I operate my key reversed (though I am also left handed and most left handed folks operate their paddle in reverse, but that really doesn’t count since I use my right hand for operation anyways)
The stock paddle operates as you'd expect with menu option KEY JACK set to "Pdl Norm." Dits on the thumb. What's weird is when you hook up an external paddle with an aux cord it reverses to dahs on the thumb. So I have to hold my key upsidedown to not have to go into the menus and switch it. It's like they programmed it reversed, and hardware fixed it with how they designed the key, which results in external keys being reversed. Or visa versa. Odd, nonetheless.
@@JonathanKayne If I understand correctly, you wouldn't have to change any settings once you attach an aftermarket key since you run reversed. But it will be reversed to how you run it set to normal with the stock key... if that makes sense.
@@CoaxAndCampstools seems to me like elecraft wired their stock paddle backwards and fixed it in firmware instead of just wiring the thing correctly in the first place. And judging from the PCB I cannot see a reason why they did that.
OH come on we wanna see your CW. I'll post a video of mine. I'm up to about 1 word per day!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol
Thanks for sharing, Now ! I want one , now to figure out how to talk Miss Claus in how bad we need this, lol
Wow!! impressive. As I'm testing soon for my General (again after 30 years).. I'd like this for the camping trips at Lewis & Clark (you guys need a POTA South Dakota guy).. Shout out to Charlie to do some 30 meter field work using various antennas!!! That would be cool. I'd like to know what he thinks of the paddle.
Seems like a cool radio, definitely goes to my "would buy if I had infinite money" list :) Oh and my cw is not great either.
But if you had the radio, maybe you could work on your CW then it would be a WIN WIN
Awesome. I need one , but my CW needs some work 1st.
..my bank balance needs some work first. That thing is around $1400.
Does it do automatic CW decoding ? What is it's max power? Can you attach a straight key ? I can send and decode CW easily. I got my first Novice License when you were tested on CW. But I never got the hang of using a automatic keyer or bug.
Nice review. And I too buy radios I don't need. Which explains the unused X6100. But the KH1 certainly looks to be the POTA/SOTA international travel box that I need for upcoming trips. And not a very heavy price, considering that (a) you get Elecraft reliability & repair and (b) it's a better 'station in a box' than any of the uSDRs &c that are floating across the Pacific ;-) Deff gonna check it out at Dayton . . . where I hope to run into you again. 73 de W8IJN
Setting WPM will determine the keyer timing as you send. - not receiving. Thank you for the intro! 72, W1RBG
I assumed that, but thanks for clarifying
Can I take it diving?
Nice move giving it to your CW budddy! 73 de ai4ot
If you don’t know Morse code it makes for a very expensive SWL radio.
i am actually going to order one this week how long did it take from when you placed the order to when it came in you had to wait? according to elecraft they say 6-8 weeks but seems to be quicker than expected for others to get theirs
Not long. About a week
@@HamRadio2 wow that's quicker than what elecraft's site says which is 6-8 weeks hope it's that range when i order mine
There's probably alot more orders in now than there were when I ordered.
@@HamRadio2 interesting i would of thought that you ordered around the time frame as the public after pacificon that made the 6-8 week wait and only pacificon orders and official testers like K4SWL would have it very early but lucky i ordered mine lets see how long i have wait to get mine in my hands
Im left handed, can the flap be mounted the other way so I can write in the log?
Yes it can
It’s gonna be super awkward for me because I’m left handed and send with my right hand. I’m gonna have the logging tray on my left though.
@@JonathanKayne that is going to be awkward. At first. You will be a natural before you know it.
@@FM-us3rd also not liking the fact that you apparently have to reverse the paddle in settings to use it. I have no clue why they would wire the paddle backwards especially considering the use of a PCB.
Yes you can mount the cover on either side
I use the Packtenna Radom wire antenna with my KX2, and its tuner can sort out 40 to 15 with no problem. Can the KH1's tuner do the same thing? Then, one small antenna and you are off to the races.
I'll have to check
Hey Jason, when did you order your KH1? I ordered on 10/21 and curious where I am on the list to ship.
It took about a week to arrive
