  • Use this video for the Maxwell Freedom 600, Maxwell Freedom 800, and Maxwell Freedom 1000 Gear set rebuild. When you look in your anchor locker, if you see that it is leaking oil, do not ignore it. Pull it immediately and rebuild it. Kits are available all over the internet, as well as get yourself a replacement shear pin for where the motor attaches to the gear set. Hope you find this helpful.

Good video mate. Just jumping in here briefly:
Maxwell's Freedom series had two models: Freedom 500 and Freedom 800 (500 used 6mm or 1/4" chain and had a 600W permanent magnet motor and 800 used 8mm or 5/16th chain and had a 1000W series-wound motor). Both had the same 44:1 gearbox, part number: P100900. That gearbox is still in use in the RC8 series, Tasman drum winch series, and VWC1000 series.
You can also go up to 110w oil if you're in a hotter climate. Just needs to be marine grade (i.e. no sulphur). Cheers.

love to find a video of the tops disassembly - cant figure out how to get the clutch cone out, and therefore remove the main shaft from the housing.

I have a Maxwell 2200 and cannot find any info on gearbox seal maintenance. Are there any similarities or major differences that you know?

Hey Bud, Maxwell 2200 was discontinued in 2006, but you can still get the seal and bearing kits. That windlass used a 3-stage 75:1 gearbox so is significantly larger than the Freedom series (44:1). Part number for the relevant 2200/2500.3500 kits: P90005 (seal kit) and P90007 (bearing kit).
You can use that part number to order from any Maxwell dealer globally. If you need any more info just shoot our head office an email: sales@vetus-maxwell.com and we can forward it through to your closest VETUS-Maxwell office, or you can look here: www.maxwellmarine.com/find_srap.php.
I work for Vetus and I'm a Maxwell "parts specialist" based in Auckland, which recently entered lockdown so I've got a bit of time on my hands. :-)
