Thanks for the thorough comparison! I'm not an action guy. I looked to replace a 7 year old pocket camera, a segment with no advancements since. I was turned off by my first GoPro, the 8 Black, for overheating, and no live preview beyond 1080p30 while recording. The Action 4 is closer to a pocket camera in terms of ease of use, and great features for simple camera peeps. But even in your demos, the selfie shots, both the clouds and hair on your arms are more defined in the GoPro (presuming same settings were used). In general, GoPro's seem to have better video quality still. I will wait for the Hero 12. But if overheating persists, and still no live preview, then the Action 4 will be more than sufficient, and still great video. Thanks again!

I’ve used GoPros for vlogging for almost 7yrs and not really had any major issues with them however I’m considering buying a DJI Action 4 as it looks amazing
I’ve been hoping for a button on the GoPro for years to switch between presets! I’m constantly going between linear and wide. That’s almost enough for me to switch too. Great review, thanks!
You can switch presets with physical buttons on GoPro 11, just hold power button and click record and you can cycle through them :))

For anyone asking why didn't I reference the difference in resolution, GoPro Shots 5.7k and Action 4 shoots 4k. Honestly there's little benefit for the vast majority of people in anything over 4k. I've been using 5.7 with GoPro for the last 2years and the only benefit has been sometime when zooming in. I'd much prefer bigger pixels and better lowlight performance any day.
for me also is more important too have stable quality, not only to iso 200 (on 5.3k i still see noise on dark area)

Gopro doesn't shoot in 5.7k. It shoots in 5.3k.
I prefer my OA3, but on this one.. the GPH11B wins.

Excellent comparison!!! Really useful. I've owned 5 different GoPros up to the Hero 9 but I've given up on them now - the short battery life, 4K overheating and glitches are just tiresome. More than ready to try another manufacturer.

Point 15 literally asked my question, I was thinking about the pro standard mouth mount. With the GoPro I literally ditched selfie sticks because it's just too fiddly changed from system to system, with the Action 4 I can see that being somewhat of a game changer.
The thing I liked about the action was the ability to add an external mic without having to buy a separate adapter. The mounting system way better as well .

So how reliable is the magnetic mount? Example, if you flip off a waterfall in a canyon with it mounted to a helmet, will it still be attached when you surface or can it detach when sufficient force is applied?
Truth if your using a camera for something like that, id at least like it bolted down. I just bought a dji, but wont be doing anything like that😂

My buddy got the GoPro 9 ($850 cad) and his action camera, freezes, and crashes from over heating. He hates it, and tried to pawn it off to me...but I ordered the Action 3 instead..

Hey Steve, just wondering if you've noticed your DJI Action 4 picks up handling noise a lot? With mine, any sort of movement on anything attached to the mount is very loud - quite reminiscent of my Zoom H1n. When attached to a backpack clip you can here the slight movement of the clip in the buckle very clearly with every step - with my GoPro Hero9 you really can't hear it at all. DJI support have told me this is normal but I've never heard anyone mention it, nor heard it in any footage, so trying to work out if it is normal for the Action 4 or if there's something going on with mine.
Can the DJI magnetic mount hold the OA4 upside down (mounted under saddle) during the vibrations of mountain bicycle ride?

Great, however does it overheat? I fish and run a gopro 11 and 10, no battery and external battery, shoot video at 4k 120 fps always on record and both overheat in the Florida sun on the water. They will stay on longer if there is a breeze, but that does not always happen in the summer months here. I resorted to putting 25mm USB fans on the them and that seemed to work. NO ONE is addressing the overheating issue with the DJI. Does it overheat?
Can the DJI Action 4 be powered through? that is powered by an external power bank with or without a battery in the camera?

I have been using DJI Gear for well over a decade now and have found them to be the leader in almost everything they make.
I have been using the DJI ACTION 3 for the last 12 months and I love it However, the Action 4 dose have one or two new features so I will be upgraded.
Also something you forgot to mention the touch screen will work underwater.

I have the Action 3 so far I’ve not seen a compelling reason to get the action 4. Also I’ve not suffered any focus issues with the 3 which I think only affected earlier versions and firmware. Have you used the action 3 and seen any reason to upgrade?

I think maybe the Sony A7siii and a 17mm lens. But you could get the same look with a MUCH cheaper setup. It’s more about the lighting than the camera.
Hello, can you do a comparison between the osmo action for and the insta 360 x3 and which you would recommend!? I am looking for a camera for when I take a trip to Ireland this year and want to get the best footage and angles but I am also brand new to film making so need something easy to use!
I’d prob get the Action 4. The X3 is really cool but requires post processing which can be annoying if you are shooting an entire holiday. Personally I combine them.
Steve is there a attachment to put the action 4 for onto a hot/cold shoe, I want to put a action 4 on top of my DSLR. If there is whats the name of it or do you have a link, that would be so helpful. I have looked online but can find anything.

Please, if the temperature sensor stops, is there a problem? If we set the temperature in PRO settings, the sensor will not make any color adjustments?
Larger sensor, wider lens that's less fisheye-iy, better battery life and cheaper? Gonna be tough to beat for the Hero 12.

Compare it to the GoPro 12 when it comes out, then it'd be a fair comparison.
This is still fair as its the best of both brands currently available. next GoPro is also going to retail for around £500 at launch so lots of people will still consider the 11

Hey there. I'm considering buying a new action camera (OSMO ACTION 3 or 4). I want to use it for MotoVlogging.
I currently own an AKASO Brave6+. The sound is pretty good and very easy (USB-C Lavalier mike =$15). It plugs straight in. Obviously, the image is very average and I'm wanting to improve the images for my youtube channel dramatically. Just purchased a Sony FDRX3000 for next to nothing, brand new - pretty easy to sort the sound on that (Has a 3.5mm jack). BUT, it has its own challenges in regards to helmet mounting.
SO, I'm considering the OSMO ACTION 3 or 4.
Here's my question. Is there any way to get audio out of the 3 or 4, without using an annoying dongle (That will probably cause faults and lots of crackles), OR the incredibly expensive (albeit very good) Wireless mike? Is there a good USBC Lavalier mike that plugs straight into the camera?
This is a deal-breaker issue. Any help would be appreciated. There must be an option (unless DJI has designed the port to be strictly proprietary). I've searched CZcams, but there appear to not be any good options.
My next option is the original OSMO ACTION 1 (Still considered a MotoVlogging weapon). It is very easy to sort the sound on - BUT, where can I find a new, or near new one?
My other option is the INSTA360RS 4k. Also needs a dongle/Audio adapter (But it is cheap and allows you to plug in any 3.5mm mike jack). This isn't my preferred option, as the picture quality is a step up from the AKASO, but not quite on par with the OSMO ACTION (Especially the 4).

I recently bought a GoPro Hero 11 and am disappointed and frustrated that I cant monitor what I am recording via iPhone/App. (Cam is often mounted on a remote control vehicle so I am shooting blind without live preview). Does the Action 4 have live preview so I can monitor what I am recording with my phone?

I feel you disagree with me. I think it's a pity that this matrix is not 16 mpx, because the dewarp is wide, which is cool, but one more option with a greater approximation would be nice, for example, when shooting while diving, such an equivalent of 28-35 mm

Thanks for the great review! It's beautiful but I noticed some softening on the ACTION 4 especially on 5:55. I am viewing your video on a 34 inch 4K LG monitor and I am only 1.5 ft away from the screen. The Action 4 video looks like it's been processed by a noise reducing filter. Overall, great video! I really like its natural color vs Gopro's slight magenta hues.
I’ve since played around with the sharpness and noise reduction settings and I like how it looks with them all on low.

Stabilisation? I didn’t notice a difference to be honest. I’m not super analytical when it comes to reviews I prefer to use a camera for real world usage to get my opinions instead of doing loads of tests
Good review. Its noce to listen to you talking, very natural. I think that, you should add the UI issue as well. Espeecialy the app. Go pro have great problems with their quick app.
And it would be good to hear how the action 4 is working with the app.

Been thinking about ditching GoPro for the DJI, my gopro has glitched and lost footage one too many times now
The one flaw with DJI cameras has been their inability to work with external wired mics, in situations with loud ambient noise, like motovlogging. The gain is way too high and can't be turned down enough, so using a mic in your helmet, results in blown out distorted and unusable audio... Tried a dozen different wired mics with the Action 3, made sure it was out of the wind, put on TWO foam covers and a dead cat, nothing worked. Known issue with the Action 3.
Any chance they fixed that with the 4?

I have the Action 4 now and I think it's fixed? I tried mine and I actually needed to turn up the gain up to +15 to hear my voice and engine.
+-0 is just too quiet.
@@kendelion That's good to know. I did read that the external mic adapter that they sell, knocks the gain down a lot, and seems to address the issues I was having with the last model
@@SquireSCA I guess so yes. It's not a problem in the GoPro since you need that huge dongle or mod to connect anything.
I still love this Action 4 since it's a lot smaller and lighter on my helmet! :D

17. this argument also makes no sense. gopro: one click on the side is the transition between the main modes, in each mode you can switch between profiles by pressing the side and recording button simultaneously, for example in video mode I have 10 profiles, and timelapse 6, imagine that they are all combined into one list
I believe that action 4 is generally a better camera, but these arguments are moderately emphasized and may not be understood by some

Have you tried gopro labs? Just asking because... well... makes a huge difference to use HDR and log profiles... can DJI do that?

Yeah that’s pretty standard with tech companies. It’s kinda like how movie reviewers get to watch hundreds of movies for free every year.
I was sent this about the start of July. Since then have put about a week of my own time into testing it and making this video.
Some bigger channels will get paid to make videos which have to be positive, kinda more of an advert.

Never just watch one review. I always watch about 5 and take the average. Some reviewers will focus on certain features over others, use different methods or also potentially just be biased.

hmmm was going to get a GoPro, now I might have changed my mind, love that they've added a light meter to it, do you find it produces accurate white balance? Would be nice if the camera had a built in wireless mic receiver. How does the stabilisation compare?
Light meter is great for white balance especially for outdoors content. Previously I locked my GoPro at 5500k but leave this on auto. Stabilisation seems about the same, I didn’t directly compare as had zero issues with it
My new Hero 11 arrived today, wondering if I should return it.

Very good comparison. Above all, I know that it is based on facts and, above all, user experience. It is not a review and comparison like on other channels, where they are afraid to highlight one or the other brand in fear of closing the door on a sponsor.
I'm quite surprised how DJI literally beat GoPro. But I have one comment, or rather a question. What do you say Steve on the GoPro Max lens mod 2.0? The 177° field of view is really great and this is a real game changer for me, especially when cycling or running. And in version 2.0 together with 4K and 60 fps.

Getting external mics in is a big issue for me and the GoPro media mod is just so sensitive to a drop of rain - then it's game over. How does the DJI deal with this when using something other than the DJI mic? I use the Rode wireless mics and they aren't waterproof but they've survived a lot of showers but I make little fishing videos in the Outer Hebrides and, sometimes, North Antrim. Despite standing with my back to the rain to protect the media mod this is what happened to the audio the first time a drop of rain fell on it: czcams.com/video/QJ6rRTz2erU/video.html

@@stevestechemporium yea definitely, I'm fully in the GoPro ecosystem with spare batteries and mounts etc, would rather not change. All I'd want from the 12 would be better low light, and I'm not even talking about night,, just on overcast days an improvement would be welcome.. Sound 👍
I only think that the osmo 4 is heavily oversharpened ... is it possible to turn the internal sharpening down ?

Yeah the release firmware added sharpness options, makes a big difference. Wish it had been there when I was testing

Good review. Point of criticism from me: I hate when cameras have different angle in review (especially here with left and right hands wide open). The light scene becomes unequal and you are not comparing the same picture anymore(.

The detail of the clouds is night and day between the two, incomparable. I'm looking for a gopro replacement, but that side by side makes dji look inferior.
For example 2:56. That's not just gopro being "slightly" better.
I might post some more comparisons. For me DJI looks a lot better overall. More natural colours and tone mapping. Can’t really just focus on one thing

Sure that's not the only deciding factor, but that one thing often takes up like half of the screen. Stormy skies, sunsets, etc. can be very pretty and DJI seems to be severly lacking in that department for some reason. Everything else seems fine, except for that one thing which is a big turn off for me.

In this video, the video quality from the GoPro looks better as well as the sound recording. The sound from the DJI is like being in under water.
Also, the colour from the DJI seems to be too much saturated. Especially the blue tone
Dunno, will see if anyone else agrees. I definitely disagree though. Much prefer the image and audio from the DJI. I listened to it on multiple devices too, laptop, phone etc. I make video’s professionally and noticed that audio and colours can vary over different devices.

I think you connected the DJI mic receiver backwards. I'm sure it'll work both ways but the way you connected it, it likely shows up in the frame when filming wide views. Also, is there a remote that works with it? Will said remote also control two 4's simultaneously? Can you run on external power, preferably with no battery, and use an external mic at the same time? Does it have "loop" recording support on all resolutions and frame rates?
yeah it'll work both ways. yeah they have a remote. Not sure about the other questions atm, not features I use so didn't test.

It's fixed focus and I've had no issues

So we have had a number of issues with the GoPros. They are not as water proof as they made out so I just got some action 3 cameras, I got to say they are built like tanks in comparison and weigh more. Needless to say we will still be using them with the waterproof housing that comes with them
the action 4 just has a digital oversharpened look with muted colours, for sure it stomps on the go pro in low light, but overall I just think the go pro image is more pleasing to the eye for reasons I cant quite put my finger on

There are far more accessories available for the hero11 for example media mod and filters and anamorphic lens etc. this could be because the gopro hero 9 10 and 11 have been around for a few years.
but the image quality on the DJI oa4 is far better, better contrast, normal linear is wider, just hoping for ND/CPL filters
Filters exist for the Action 4 and its compatible with most GoPro accessories

I’ve owned pretty much owned all the mainstream action cameras over the last decade - GoPro, DJI, Insta etc. Whilst I agree that the image quality is better on some of the rivals than the GoPro, if I need to get some footage I will pick up the GoPro as the camera of choice. I’ve had cracked Osmo Action lenses, and Insta 360 and Go crashes. The GoPro is far more rugged and reliable. An action camera needs to be to robust. I went through 2 Osmo Action lenses caused by “stress” not even a direct contact with a lense. That’s not good.
Great video Thanks. I jumped to AO4 because its a much better camera. Also I wasn't impressed of Gp's underhanded tactics to cheat it's subscibers out of rollover payments (myself included) without any notification! Seems like dji will go from strength to strength in the future.
