  • Synthplex is on this weekend in Burbank LA - back after the Covid breaks, and our man on the ground Jim from Ear Monkey Music grabbed some quality time with the new Arturia MiniFreak, The 6 voice, two oscillator polysynth based on the beating heart of the MicroFreak.
    We have one in for review and will be releasing in due course, but in the mean time, here's Jim taking a look at some of the presets.
    MiniFreak is available now priced at $599

    Interesting synth. I like the way it has it’s own sound going on. Can’t wait for the full review. The two play throughs have been very helpful for getting a feel for it’s capabilities. Thanks

    Very musical and full of character, even with multiple osc types. It's been a long time since I've heard a modern budget polysynth with such character and musical presets. Yes, good presets are a plus.

    I thought the Korg miniogue was a beast, but after hearing the auturia mini freak, this thing just blows the Korg out of the water, with just incredible weird sounds. Can't wait for the backorder to arrive. I'm not crazy about the looks but it's the sounds that got me to buy it, I'm tickled pink with giddy excitement. Congratulations Auturia! Outstanding job for the money.

    I’m thinking the next step in the Freak lineup should be a MatrixFreak. Maybe a tabletop, keyboardless version.

  • @danasdas6683
    @danasdas6683 Před rokem +8

    Maybe Arturia should make a good capacitive keyboard Keystep 37 (or larger) type thing for those who want to use it on whatever they want to. There’s one really cool feature of the ROLI blocks (seaboard or Lumi) is that they link together to make a long keyboard. I kinda hate a single Lumi, but 3, and yeah it’s minikeys, but it’s suddenly 72 polyaftertouch minikeys. Maybe Arturia can do something like that but with capacitve?

    • @almostghosts
      @almostghosts Před rokem +1

      A capacitive sequencer would be super cool. Like a grown up make noise 0-coast. I love the 0-coast but it doesn’t have any quantizing. A four track sequencer with a patch bay that lets you modulate the sequences.

    This is a.beat MiniFreak sound demo so far. A nice varied selection of sounds that show off what it can do. As an old 80s guy I really think this is the Juno for today. Affordable, approachable and versatile.

    • @Acrimonious_Snake
      @Acrimonious_Snake Před rokem

      Anti-Juno, I guess. Juno was sweet candy from start to finish, no matter the set of parameters. It had a very limited synthesis, but which is always very pleasing to ear. This modern synthesizer, in contrast, is very powerful, but easily and often becomes harsh in sound.

    Looks cool . What many asked for a poly freak . I’m in the minority on missing the touch plate control surface , but despise mini keys for anything other than mono bass lines and leads however so it’s not giving me the full G.A.S.
    One thing that could take it to another level would be to integrate a “ vintage mode “ to off set the filters , envelopes lfos , and add drift to the Osc ( MI code has a drift for the Macro Osc so that may be already still in the code ? ) that would make it just that much more desirable for me anyway .

    • @ChrisP3000x
      @ChrisP3000x Před rokem +4

      I think you are a majority. The comments definitely aren't a representation of actual musicians/buyers, mostly shills. It lost everything that made the microfreak unique and great.

    • @Death_By_Media
      @Death_By_Media Před rokem

      @@ChrisP3000x The Macro Osc to me is the main draw of the engine, The hybrid nature a close second , and the overall architecture is pretty damn decent for the cheapest synth I’ve bought new . The touch plate just made me play it differently in a way I grew to like and it makes the Micro a unique instrument for sure , but I wouldn’t go so far to to say it’s All that makes it unique . I’d be on this a 100% with 37-49 full size regular old keys, but I’m just one of the many who hate mini keys so if I was going to use it as a module like I do the micro half the time the space could be better utilized with the touch plate for that something different on occasion. Alternatively if they did a module I’d snap it up in an instant.

    That 1st patch whilst struggled on bottom end has some serious mid weight punch.
    This is going to be an excellent addition imo.
    Buh buh buh it has Mini keys (yes that's why it's called a Mini) and it has no PCB keybed. I like to see people try and play chords on a PCB or stabs, see how that works out.

    • @valdir7426
      @valdir7426 Před rokem +2

      playing chords on a pcb is totally doable. the main benefit of the pcb keyboard is you have very precise control over poly aftertouch. it's great for drones or writing expressive chords progressions; for example with strings. Different things for different needs. I often use my microfreak as a controller for all these reasons, and when I need to play more traditionally I have a keyboard anyway. I almost want a "microfreak control" that is just the pcb keyboard and a few knobs, with a cv interface.

    • @dankeplace
      @dankeplace Před rokem

      @@valdir7426 not it's not double for the common keys player.
      You need a certain skill to use normal PAT as it is with keybeds, let alone PCB.

    • @valdir7426
      @valdir7426 Před rokem +2

      @@dankeplace It's certainly awkward for certain placement but yes it's doable. I'm not talking complex stuff; just like basic four chords progression. I'm not a skilled keyboard player and I can do it. again it's an interesting keyboard for specific needs. It's the buchla approach. You will need another keyboard with the microfreak; but it's not a problem since it's a tiny synth.

    • @dankeplace
      @dankeplace Před rokem +1

      @@valdir7426 37 keys is a bit diff than 25, when you have 2 octaves vs 3, your hands will span more, having a PCB keybed on the Mini would put a ton of people off and as a result would lose sales for Arturia.
      Not everyone wants a drone machine, or something that is *doable*
      They want an instrument to be able to play.

    • @valdir7426
      @valdir7426 Před rokem

      for a bigger synth it makes more sense but the microfreak is a less than 300 euro instrument that is meant to be used with other hardware, it needs effects; and it needs a regular keyboard for certain stuff; that's the deal, but it also offers a very unique take on a keyboard that very few other synths /controllers offer; that alone makes it interesting.
      That's also why it has cv outs and the mini doesn't I think. The MicroFreak has been a best seller for a few years "despite" its quirky keyboard so it must do something right still.
      The mini is like a more traditional poly; and it's nice but it will be compared to all the other poly on the market; including its shortcomings.

  • @dos5gw962
    @dos5gw962 Před rokem +1

    It seems that you can get a sawtooth from multiple engines. But I'm afraid none of them sounds bright and full along octaves. In microfreak Basic Waves you get bright sound in high notes but muffled sound in the bass. and you get the opposite with V. analog engine. I would like to have this fixed in Minifreak.
