An absolutely phenomenal game. I'll agree with Cohh that this may be the pinnacle of games when it comes to mixing FMV with normal gameplay. They did it in such a way that having a live action character in the same scene as a playable character felt normal.
So glad this was a spoiler- free video so I could watch it not having played the game yet. Love to hear that the game's a success and to this extent!
Max Payne 1 & 2, Alan Wake, Alan Wake's American nightmare, Quantum Break, Control and now Alan Wake 2 mixing it all in a bowl of awsomeness. I have never been so rewarded of being aware of lore from six other games, just amazing web of references and meaning within the Remedyverse. Nobody does it like Remedy.
Reminds me of the Legacy of Kain series. Too bad that one will never be finished :(

Wait, is the Remedyverse actually meant to be a thing? I know Control and Alan Wake are sort of set in the same world, but Max Payne too? How connected are these series? I've never finished Control (I need to) but love Max Payne and the first Alan Wake. I plan on starting AW2 tonight since I 100% finished Spiderman last night.
@@JackRichMusic Max Payne is more loose connection (partly since Rockstar owns the ip now), but Quantum Break has literally a trailer for AW2 as an easter egg and possibly larger connections in AW2. Contol's AWE DLC was directly AW content related and sort of the announcement for AW2. So yeah, it's all weaved together.

Also, Max Payne, even though Sam Lake can't legally say it due to Rockstar Licensing is absolutely 100% tied in. I guess you can interpret it as Alex Casey = Max Payne, Max Payne events most likely are Alan Wake's Casey's books. Hell, in AW2, when Casey shows up in the dark place is 100% wearing the EXACT same clothes as in Max Payne 2 lol. Same tie, same coat, everything.
remedy was always a visionary bunch that had enormous BALLS and never thought to put themselves at risk with trying new things, and even if they failed (i.e. QB in a way was a bit of a failure) they learned from their mistakes.

Alan Wake is like the little brother of Max Payne 1&2. Sam Lake is damn good at writing stories. I liked all the Remedy games. Can't wait for Max Payne remake. Even Quantum Break had a good story but was too short though and not enough gameplay

I haven't played through the whole game yet, but it's constantly throwing so many crazy things and ideas at me that it actually reminds me of the time when I got PS2 with MGS2 and Silent Hill 2 back in the day. Just the absurd amount of ambition is exhilarating to see instead of countless yearly iterations of the same idea and mechanics that some franchises tend to do.
I 100% agree with your thoughts on thia game. I finished this game 2 days ago and I was blown away from this experience. I played AW1 for the first time 2 last weekend then played AW2 this week. 100% AW2 and I am a new fan of AW. I want to go deeper into the rabbit hole and play more Remedy games. Yes I played Max Payne 1 and 2 and love them. Now I'm playing control.
Play Control, and you will fall in love with Remedy. They are an exceptional game developer. Control & Alan Wake II both are the TOP 2 games of my life. I am now so waiting for Control 2.
Please let remedy remain independent. It would be sad to see it brought by a publisher and suffer the fate of BioWare or Arkane. We have a genuinely artistic studio that has a passion for what it makes. If a publisher gets its tentacles on it, it will be subsumed and its spirit and creativity destroyed.
I rarely see a review this passionate from Cohh. Damn near felt inspired just listening! I immediately went out and bought both Alan Wake games. Can't wait to give them both a solid playthrough over the holidays. If they're on the same level as Control, then I won't regret it for a second.
My summary of Alan Wake 2:
Its a pretty long game with the best graphics that i have yet witnessed in a game.
And i played RDR2 , Uncharted 4, Last of Us Part 1 and 2, Horzon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. So i have some games to compare it to in terms of graphics.
The music is perfect,.
The story is however very hard to understand and it will give you many wrong leads until you somewhat get it at the end.
The game is sometimes very hard to play and that is mostly due to the jump scares. They will hit you and they will do their job. The monsters most of the time reminded me of Bioshock, which is okay but most of the fear comes from these jump scares.
And the game has lot and lots and i mean lots of them.
I've been playing video games since the 80's and one thing I never saw fit in natural way to a game was FMV, until now with this game. Well done Remedy, this was exceptional achievement. I was hooked to watch every scene to the end.

What's crazy is 10 + years ago they were doing FMV during gameplay in American Nightmare. AW2 is a great game for sure, I felt like the movement and inability to pull yourself up ledges except in areas where they button prompt you to climb was really the only weak spot in the game. Definitely my GOTY, I can't wait to see control 2
This game is pure art.
First game this year that makes me think about it daily after beating it and waiting for news on ng+/dlc to have excuse to play it again.
Toss up for me between Alan Wake 2 and Resident Evil 4 for my GOTY - What a year for games 2023 was… (even technical nightmares like Jedi Survivor)

Kojima is an icon. I don’t think many people are as familiar with Remedy and Sam Lake but maybe in time.
The fact we got Alan Wake 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 so close together... we were spoiled. 2023 was stacked and those 2 games were the perfect ending to it
I'm glad you enjoyed it just as much as I did. Unless something Like a Dragon Gaiden or Rogue Trader pull out something spectactular, this is going to be joint GOTY with BG3 for me. The two games are so different it's impossible to say which one is better. Both introduced lots of innovation into their respective genres and both had fantastic story, directing and VA.
I didn't watch it live because I was playing myself so only peeked into the twitch VODs every other day.
I could tell how invested you were in the game as you didn't look at chat once during the last cinematic before the credits.
Alan Wake was a great little piece of art. They made Alan Wake 2 into a hybrid of Wake 1, RE, Control, Max Payne, etc...
Just beat it, phenomenal. Combat, story, graphics, everything was just mind blowing. Combat wasn’t anything crazy but super fun and never got boring. My personal GOTY tied with Baldurs 3, easy.
I was spoiled by Control, nothing has been able to surprise me as much since I played it. Sadly, neither did Alan Wake 2 :) It's a brilliant in every way game and I truly enjoyed playing it even though I'm not a fan of the survival-horror genre. It's just that when you know it's surival-horror, you know what to expect. And for someone who knows the stories of the original Alan Wake and Control well, the plot lines in Alan Wake 2 look very good but also somewhat predictable.
In any case, many thanks to Remedy for making this amazing game! I'm looking forward to the AW2 DLCs and to Control 2.

There's only one thing missing in the game and left me kinda sad "previously on... Alan Wake".

Fully agree with everything. Initiation 4: We Sing was the absolute pinnacle of any video game I've ever seen. I already had all these feelings from the start of the game but this was the peak Lynch moment, it kept you interested at EVERY turn on a story that is at times really hard to follow, even for a massive Remedy fan and massive MP1, 2, AW1 and Control fan. I haven't finished it yet but so far it's a 11/10. It's GOTY 5x, but we all know Spiderman2 will get it because of marketing drive behind it + all normies (no ill intention) gravitate towards it
we sing is overhyped. literally a musical stage with mediocre shooting sections sprinkled in. i was expecting more given how people hyped it but meh.
1 level from super mario wonder had far more creativity than this mediocre musical level.

In all honesty, the new Robocop game has better story arcs than Starfield's main story, Bethesda lost their grip and way and I think that's gone for good.. They used to ride on having an engine no one else could compete with.. Now every engine does what CE does but 10x better and more efficiently. Their storytelling is so vanilla and throughout Starfield you could feel all the differences in tone and if it was supposed to be rated E or rated M...

I doubt it even gets a nomination. Nominees will be AC6, BG3, AW2, Zelda TotK, SpiderMan, Some indie game or something. AC6 is a not given. Maybe it doesn't get in. Idk.

Your thoughts vid convinced me to buy instead of watch (which I promise to still do later) as I had originally planned... Just finished the game.. And ya.. Wow, I had to rewatch your thoughts video.. Read a few articles about the ending.. Digest the full story... And now, I can safely say.. Thank you. This game was an incredible story, and I agree with pretty much everything you've said here. The FMV stuff was amazing and so well done, overall (despite some acting issues for me lol)... I absolutely loved this game. Thanks again for these videos and convincing me to play AW2!

Hey Cohh/Red, I'm unsure if any of the music during the youtube playthrough is cut out (as I have yet to start it), but just in case it is, I wanted to watch the vod instead. For some reason, at least one of the vods is completely gone from twitch. Is there a reason for that, and will it be made available again? Or can I just watch on youtube, cause no music was censored?
This year for games will be remembered for a long time. It’s just mind-boggling that BG3 released this year and I’m still even considering other games for the GOTY.

Just curious. It has been nearly a decade (or longer) since I have played Alan Wake 1. Should I replay that before playing Alan Wake 2?
If you can stomach the gameplay they did release a remastered version of the original game. Another option is to watch a re-cap video, one of which Remedy released themselves.
At least watch a detailed summary of the story on YT. Same goes for Control

I will admit the graphics, and story are worthy of GOTY but what keeps it, for me, is the god awful dialogue.
BG3 is definitely GOTY worthy. Starfield is in the AWII camp for me, dialogue just ruined the immersion for me.
Damnwas not expecting this with watching the little bit of his stream that i saw. Didnt watch too much in case i wanted to play it.but damn im glad it was praised in that way.
My GOTY. One of the best games ive ever played.
The presentation and story plot of the game IS phenomenal, best looking game of 2023 for me. Worth a playthrough for that alone. I just didn't like some of the acting, especially Wake himself in game and in the FMV's. It felt a bit "cheesy school play" to me. The actor playing Alice was by far the best performing. And the important character from Control they added. But I personally had big problems navigating the objectives and with the combat. I was not a fan of the "stage play" style of gameplay where you just try to find the next location to move the story forward within a maze style map. And the combat was so messy, the FOV doesn't help either. Everything was too close up, where the enemies move so fast while the player character is a slow tank and they're suddenly behind you or jump towards you. I guess they wanted more of a Resident evil 4 approach. But I got one-shotted so many times out of nowhere and couldn't prevent getting hit with dodges because it happens so sudden. Reloading and healing are also really slow and because the attacks come so frequent u hardly have time to reload or heal sometimes. Really frustrating for me. I finished the game yesterday. It's a gorgeous looking game, but I was really disappointed in the gameplay itself. Also cheap and incredibly repeating full screen jump scares ruined any possible moments of fear in the game for me. If that's the only way you feel you can scare a player then you don't know how to make horror scary imho.

Great game overall but the ending was bad. No spoilers... just not a fan.
Also the final stretch in general was a letdown, and everything regarding combat is kinda mid (ok but not great mechanics, close to zero enemy variety, ok-ish boss fights, encounter design that's just overstaying its welcome by the end, etc).
Great game regardless, but it's an 8.5 for me, 9 if I'm feeling generous lol.

Usually cohh and I are in sync until he plays something like mech games (which is stupid to me). It seems he and I are divided on AW2 as well. The narrative was too ambitious and wasn't delivered well. Oftentimes, I had no idea what the game wanted from me. A LOT of weird glitches that would make areas harder than necessary (e.g. when i'd try to shoot an enemy and it feels like my cursor would blink out and appear to the side of an enemy or when flashlight focus wouldn't connect or i'd fall out of the map periodically). I don't understand the high praise for this game, and I LOVED OG AW and Control.

Didn't have glitches at all for me, and it's very clear what Alan wake is about, it's unfortune you don't get what a good game this is.
@allreli6943 What's exactly good about it? The story is very mediocre without even an end, the combat is bad, the dialogue is awful with 1/2 the game, one character (Saga) isn't even a character and more a cliché. Also much of the game is in line with a Layers of Fear experience (a.k.a. walking and pressing a single button).
@@aytony4090 I'm not sure if you realize this but Alan Wake is notoriously a bad writer, he's a best selling author of cheesy thriller books, he's writing isn't good. That's why tons of characters are walking cliches. It's pretty obvious.
@sptz87 So we're using the excuse that the game is bad because it's intentionally done that way... Well, you do you, I guess, I recommend Snakes on a Train for similar stories then.
i dont know man....i have a 3070 not a 4090 and i have to say the game look better from you on youtube than it is for me...story is ok but the gameplay uhmmm not the best, i mean one of the worst probably but yeah...i should just look for it from youtube like a film instead of playing it 🤔

It's not optimized because they made it for Consoles first and ported it back into PC. The signs are all there. The devs never learn that shortcuts will ultimately lead to their downfall. I won't buy the game. I have seen enough early reviews and benchmarks to know exactly how badly the game is optimized. I won't buy incomplete shiet anymore. Putting on RT actually improved performance for a bunch of benchmarks. That alone is proof enough.
cohh still has no idea how to critique gameplay.
gameplay is easily the weakest aspect of alan wake 2. slow and clunky is what i would describe.
the first boss fight for example nightengale, was badly designed. well, to be honest, boss fights in general in this game are atrocious.
the jumpscares are absolutely awful. it got super old after the first couple of times and i was hoping they would stop but no, they actually ramped it up.
game was too long for its own good, especially since the gameplay loop started to get repetitive and predictable. it doesn't have good gameplay to service it's long runtime. and due to the repetition, it lead to the pacing being slow and draggy.
enemy variety was VERY lackluster.... there was only 3 kinds of enemies.
6/10 at best tbh. best graphics ever and good story. but those won't save you from bad gameplay.

The gameplay is absolutely its weakest point, closely followed by its dlc bait ending.
AW2 is my biggest disappointment of the year, there were too many things that brought me out of my immersion and i thought a lot of the dialog was a bit on the immature side and reactions by PCs/NPCs that didnt make narative sense, with the exception of the graphics i found the rest to be mid to bad, too much that ruined my immersion and to me immersion is pretty important
Epic exclusive so I don’t care. The game can be the best in the last 10 years, I will not buy it.
I will do an entry on my calendar to look again in one year for it.
First game aswell, they deserve it since they are the publisher. No matter what epic games is gonna be involved. Your loss.

@@chanter3978epic did some really sketchy things in the past and buys exclusive rights from Publishers. Google for it if you’re interested what Epic did in the past.

These things are always subjective but I strongly disagree. As far as the medium of games go its a really refreshing experience, environmentally and through its storytelling its really quite unique. So many games lack originality these days, think its a real testament to a studio when they can offer something that hasn't really been done before.
