    When I was in school I was a Camaro lover , still am but after doing research and Driving both , I like the Trans Am soo much more and love the dash and the sound of the Pontiac V8 at wide open throttle with an open hood scoop , I really like that Pontiac V8 sound and the fact that Pontiac with the Trans Am were doing everything they could to keep Muscle cars alive while every other manufacturer quit making them , even Chevrolet stopped building the Z28 for 1975 but brought them back in 1977 after seeing the success of the Trans Am sales , I own four early 70's Formula's and a Trans Am and my other cars i may sell one day , but the Pontiacs I will keep , they are bad ass cars and soo much fun to drive and make me feel like I am 18 again every time I sit in the drivers seat , Pontiac's forever ! And the fact that the Pontiac V8 was detuned from the Factory to meet Gov standards made it easy to make them fast in a couple of weekends with very little money , Distributor recurve , Headers and a carb tune and they came alive with simple bolt on upgrades , Thank you Pontiac !

    1973 was the first year for the full hood bird option. I graduated HS in 1979, worked & saved to buy a brand new T/A only to be told I couldn't order the W72 4speed in anything other than the full boat silver anniversary model which I couldn't afford so I ended up ordering a 4 speed Z28, nice car but defiantly not the T/A. I owned a 70 Z28 & currently own a 73 SD T/A & a 79 Macho T/A, all 4 speeds &. the T/A's are just better driving cars all the way around, especially the WS6 79...Thank you Herb Adams.

    Love both cars, but I'm a Pontiac guy all the way. Have a '73 in Brewster green. Made some changes to it and put the original 455 & Automatic in storage. It now has a 496 using a 455 block from a '74 Catalina. It has cast iron Super Duty heads on it and a Tremec six-speed. Those are the major items to many others to list.
    Like the presentation and I see others have mentioned the external dimensions of the Pontiac engine are the same from 326 to 455. Pontiac never had a big block. That is why the 389 fit in where the 326 lived in the Tempest to create the GTO.

    Yeah I'm in agreement I like them both too, when you put a GM product up against another GM product it's hard to decide which is the better one. If a person can afford both of them it's probably best to have both of them. If you can't have both of them it still itself would be tough to pick one if you are a true GM guy.

    Great video. It actually upsets me to think that I had a fully loaded (with the engine block heater) yellow '76 Trans Am back in 1977 when I turned 16 (car was used and cost me $10,000.00 CDN which was a fortune to me at the time, and I thought I was never going to pay off. They were definitely "de-tuned", but luckily I knew some gear heads that got the most out of that 455.

  • @mattspontiacta
    @mattspontiacta Před rokem +1

    Nice video comparison. I say line em up and see which is faster. Even with only 250 hp I think the TA would take the z28. The 455 has over 100 ft of torque that the Chevy 350. My money is on the TA. Both beautiful cars.

    One more point, Yes Pontiac’s blocks are externally the same size, the cranks make the difference in cubic inch. That was the genius behind Pontiac. The thing is the heads were different between for each spec sizes of the engine. Pontiac forever!

  • @memorylane7068
    @memorylane7068 Před rokem +1

    All of the Pontiacs from the 326 through the 455 all used the same size block. If the same valve covers are used, you can't tell the size difference from just the top appearance.

    Pontiac Firebird Trans Am had the Super Duty 455 V-8; I always wondered why Chevrolet did not option their LS6 454 V-8 in the Camaro Z28? It would have been a monster!!! At one time, General Motors almost gave Buick and Oldsmobile their own versions of the second generation F-Body, but the plan was later scrapped because GM felt the sales would have affected the Camaro and Firebird

    • @512bb
      @512bb Před 11 měsíci

      The big block's were designated to the SS's, the Z28 origins were rooted in the trans am racing series hence Chevy would have never placed the big block in the Z28 but the LS6 would have been pretty cool none the less.

    Two of my all time favorite cars. Love the AC and other extras on the T/A. Being an LT RS/Z, it must have been ordered up north not to have AC. I had a '71 Camaro and then a '74 LT Z28 both with AC. The '74 was a 4 speed with power windows. One of my best friends had that same Trans Am you're showing (but 4 spd. without the bird and had the 455 SD) and in the quarter mile I would "usually" take him in my Z28 (4spd., headers and Holly dual line) but at 90 mph his was like hitting passing gear and it took off setting you back in the seat so that 455 SD was badass with class. So I always said my Z may be a little quicker, but your Trans Am is a lot faster... He took the power for granted and pulled out in front of a car and totaled that Trans am back in '75. He then bought a '74 with a 400 ci wfour-speed. Half the car of the '73 though nice, if never compared 👉🏼 it's okay he bought a clone not long ago like his first one. Wow! Back then, I liked the Z28 but now being older (and wiser) I would definitely take the T/A🤙🏼

Still enjoyment was truly memorable. The Z 28's I'd run up on were modified, so yea they were fast for the time. It was great to see your two head-to-heads! Question, was there a shift kit installed in both? Kind of sounded that way. just curious no complains, Shoot I'd rotate both on weekends! I love the exterior look best of both vehicle's year and models, Camaro's split bumper. But the 73 Trans Am of all TA's inside and out has my heart. I test drove one and loved it since. My friend had the Camaro, I had a 79 Trans Am (and a 81 Formula). Either vehicle would make me happy BUT, a 4spd. is a must in either vehicle.

    The 73 was the first year for the screaming chicken Not 72. You used the regular 250 Hp 455 but used top engine for the Chevy. You did NOT have all options as you did not have an SD-455!! Which would run rings around the Chevy. By the way.... there is no "big block" Pontiac. All Pontiac blocks from the 326 to the 455 are the same size, differing in bore and stroke. Which one is best? I bought a 74 red, no chicken, SD-455 new in 74. By the way, slightly modified, it ran 12.20's all night long at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio on street nights wearing BF Goodrich Ta radials of L60-15 size in the rear ( not Slicks) . Drill the rivets on the shaker on the way home from the dealer for real ram air. Ditch the 3.08 ring and pinion for 3.72, B & M Hole shot converter and trans Kit for the Turbo 400, Recurve the HEI and most importantly ditch the sideways muffler system that according to Nunzi"s Automotive lowered the out put by 90 Horsepower. I ran Hooker headers and Thrush glass packs with turn downs on mine.
