I,m a colorado (Inter torcedor), and i can"t really reinforce how much this match was antecipated by other club torcedores in Brasil, the rivalry was know and everybody just espected a fistsfight (Sadly those happened quite often in state championships (staduals), and that is just what happened.
But in all honsesty, both teams have a briliant historys and if you want to dabble a litle further i recomend Inter 2006 world championship (That was inflicted in a "superteam Barcelona" that contain amazing players, such as "ronaldinho gaúcho" a legendary player that start his career in Grêmio.
and Grêmio "batalha dos aflitos" in wich they secured a place in Brazilizan top league. (But Gremio also have some nice stories os world championship and Inter have a nice one in his return to the top championship as wel).
Sorry for any misurdenstanding. English not being my mother lenguage and all...
*Edit - spelling and I really dont like the google translations to "torcedores", so i'm keeping that word. "fan" doesn't quite translate well. "torcedores" is a word that is exclusive to sports teams in Brasil.

Talking as someone that only keeps up with brasil, argentina and the big european leagues, but both teams have an incredibly similar and vast arsenal of trophies in both nationally and internationally to the point that you can make an argument for either in regards to having the better one. Then you add the incredibly detailed origin stories, the clashing color schemes and logos, how their stadiums were layed out, the fact that for more than a 100 years no other team in the state even came close to competing with those, the incredibly passionate fans and the cultural divide in Porto Alegre it created out of a blue x red, and I can say its the biggest football rivalry I know of.
Shout outs to Boca and River to being close, but I think Boca has an undeniable edge over River when it comes to Libertadores and Sul-Americanas.

This match… IT’S THE RIVALRY, MAN.
It’s nuts. And it’s also pure. It’s based on soccer alone.
There’s nothing that differentiate the clubs, but themselves. They don’t represent distinct anything: religion, geography, social class, raison d’être, etc.
Yet, the hatred is there. They are “them”. We are “us”. They are the team to which we cannot lose, ever; and that’s all that matters.
It’s the best rivalry there is.

When she asked if there were any ulterior motives behind it, one of the fans just said: "Ulterior motives, like racism and shit? No, fighting because of racism is stupid, fighting for literally nothing is the man's way to deal with everything." And the fan he was fighting the day prior, who was in the adjacent bed just goes: "Agreed"

The first thing we ask to someone else in our home state is "gremio or inter?". We also use the term "grenal" as language figure to describe something that is polarized, like "the politics in brazil are grenalized" instead of polarized, divided.

But, back them, it was the only title they would had to play, we didnt had a nacional champioship until 1959, and a nacional cup until 1989, and brasilians teams didnt care about libertadores until the 90s, soo the state title was something big.

Serving like a qualifying competition and duking on the regional rivals. That's also the reason why Brazil have so much BIG CLUBS, 13 in total.

The state championships in Brazil used to be a thing until transportation was improved (look at the size of this country), and national robust tournments were implemented.
They are still important for small clubs which are mostly not qualified for any of the National four divisions. There are also a few players from these tornments who get signed for 1st and 2nd divisions for instance

As an Brazilian that is “Gremista” I can confirm that this is just the start of the chaos of our league, e a gente é o IMORTAL! And the player who got an concussion was Villasanti (Uruguayan), and I think you should go deeper in the Brasilerão, half of our player on that match exited years or months later, like Pepe exited for Porto, Everton Cebolinha exited for Benfica and then Flamengo, Alisson (midfielder) exited for I think another team from Portugal and I loved that time, It was incredible, the Grenal founded Lucas Leiva, Ronaldinho, Allison (Goalkeeper), Dunga, Alexandre Pato and much more

The red cards were in the last 10mins of the match, and to me the best part was... that was actually a great game. Offensive, intelligent football from both sides, being denied by the post or the opposite keeper many times. If the game ended 4x4 it wouldn’t have been a surprising result. Shame that because there were no goals, no one will remember the quality of football played. Truly an epic showdown from Brazil's biggest rivalry

Nice, love it. You nailed it! Despite the huge national propaganda and lobby for Corinthias and Flamengo by the largest national communication network in Brazil. TV, Radio, Media Streams, etc (The Rede Globo), to represent these two as the two "biggest teams" and "most popular classic" in the country, and streaming them all day long on public channels to all corners of Brazil (understandable, since Rio - São Paulo zone where these teams are from has 1/3 of Brazil's population alone), Grêmio and Inter are by far the biggest rivalry classic in Brazil, FYI in Rio Grande do Sul, you have to choose one of the two as soon as you leave your mother's womb and that will define you for the rest of your life.
To the point where people won't say which team they support until they know which team their teachers, boss, etc, support. On our birthdays, Christmas, etc... We usually give gifts and say "Although he is Grêmio/Colorado, he is a good and sweet person, etc..." 😂😂😂

So true. The crowd also has a style of cheering and culture that is similar to the Argetinian style, which makes sense considering that Rio Grande do Sul shares a lot of cultural characteristics with Argentina and Uruguay. The two teams are respected everywhere in Brazil, and playing a game locally against any one of them is a challenge that no team takes lightly. Check "rua de fogo", or "street of fire", for instance, where Internacional fans use red smoke to make the whole street leading tho the stadium bright red in anticipation of big matches. The streets of Porto Alegre always get meanier whenever there's a big game (Libertadores) and one of the teams lose. Porto Alegre is definitely one of the cities in South America (and probably the world) that is craziest about football.

It happened in a “friendly” match for the inaugural tournament of Inter’s stadium, Beira-Rio. The tension happened specially because Gremio’s players wanted revenge for their defeat in former Gremio’s stadium inaugural tournament, in which Inter won 6-2.

I am a brazilian and Grêmio fan, and i can say is that rivality "Gre-Nal" is the bigger and most insane in Brazil. Imagine a city wich have two world champions teams. It's Porto Alegre.
The both teams have theirs prides. For example, Grêmio was responsible for bring Ronaldinho Gaúcho to the pitches, while Internacional, some years later, won the own legendary Ronaldinho's Barcelona of 2006, in final match of FIFA clubs world cup.
Also because of the proximity of Uruguay and Argentina that the city haves. This makes to their culture be of a very strong play mode inside the pitch, and very fanatic crowd around him.

I think what makes this derby one of the toughest in the world is: 1) Football REALLY matters in Brazil. 2) Both teams come from the same city. 3) they are some of the biggest teams in the country and although either side claims to be bigger, we all know they both need each other and are very similar. 4) It's, in general, unpredictable. One of them can be doing much better in the national championship and still lose the derby. 5) It's a freaking GRENAL. It's always fun to watch!

It's definitely without a doubt the biggest rivalry of Brazil, not sure if it's the biggest in the world cause there's also River Plate and Boca Juniors in Argentina, but if you look at the numbers it's truly incredible, they faced each other 440 times,161 victory from Inter and 141 from Grêmio,138 draws,Grêmio have 3 Libertadores but Internacional have more important titles in my opinion,2 Libertadores but 1 Team Fifa World Cup in 2006 with a victory against Barcelona from Spain and Ronaldinho was in that team! that was a amazing achivement from Inter, they also have a victory over Internazionale from Italy and Stuttgart from Germany winning the Dubai Cup in 2008,and just last year they went to the Libertadores Semifinals but lost against Fluminese from Brazil, take your picks to who's better but I choose Inter.

  • @rafaelmacieldossantos3048

cool vid, dude! kudos! More infos on this derby for ppl out there. These are clubs that combined have won libertadores 5x and 2 times the Club World Cup (Inter 1x0 Barcelona -2006 & Grêmio 2x1 Hamburger SV - 1983), plus MANY other national titles. It's deemed as one of South America's most important/difficult derbies by journalists, players, and supporters. On the top of that, they've only battled for local titles for roughly 70 years because there wasn't a Brazilian league that counted with Inter and Grêmio, so to beat each other was a big deal to rule the city/state. Also, football in South America used to be really physical, especially in south of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. Therefore, fights were common... violent sliding tackles, shovels, punches, and so on. It has been less violent in the recent years, but these brawls still break out every now and then. Oh, another fun fact: these two squads had been taking the piss out of each other for quite some time. Grêmio had won a few important titles and Inter had been relegated. These squads (players) had fought and argued a number of times over the years prior to the Libertadores Derby in 2020, so when things heated up in this match, they simply came to blows. This "squad hatred/derby" only ended when Inter won a derby that pretty much relegated Grêmio to Brazilian's league second division in 2021. Internacional players waved carton-made coffins (which means the team is "dead" for going to second division in Brazil). Grêmio's players were pissed as Inter's players made fun of their defeat and a fight broke out (again). After that, both teams squads, little by little, disbanded and the rivalry is only on the pitch and less violent, but it still divides the city of Porto Alegre between reds and blues as well as it makes this city an interesting place if you are a football aficionado!

The Grenal is considered by many the best derby in Brazil, and it's definitively the most competitive. Both team HATES each other. This rivalry is so huge that when CocaCola sponsored most of the teams in Brazil, they had to change their logo color to black because red could not go on Grêmio’s shirt. Actually, not even in the stadium. The only exception are the fire extinguishers because their color is law enforced. I don’t know how it is nowadays, but not too long ago Grêmio’s players were advised not to buy red cars because they wouldn’t be allowed to enter when going to training sessions.
