Tip for starting your siphon. 1Submerge the whole thing in the tank and let the tube fill completely. 2. Cover the small end of the hose with your finger while still under water. 3. Keep the large end submerged and lift the small end out and into your bucket which is lower than your tank. 4. Release your finger from the small end. 5. Water will start flowing. 6. Never taste tank water again.

In high school one of my science teachers had a fresh water tank with bass, bream, catfish and the prettiest fish was a gar that was about 10" long. It was a beautiful tank. One day I'd like to make one myself.

One more thing -- bluegill can be a lot of fun to catch on a fly rod. They will tear up a spider fly -- basically a piece of sponge rubber with rubber bands for legs. If you don't fly fish, this is a great way to learn!

@@COLE_and_JAY then you already know what fun it can be! That could be an idea for a future video -- teach folks how to fly fish -- roll casting was always good for bluegills, especially if there was a lot of cover around (or people close by)

Awsome Tank! I used to do the same thing many years ago. My favorite was baby black catfish and crawdads. Plenty of minnows and natural aquatic bugs that the fish can live on. I caught them with little nets. I also tried to incorporate live plants when i could. It became an obsession for a while.
Y'all do great videos and make every one of them interesting and we really appreciate all that you do! So a big Thanks from your CZcams followers!

Cole put the big end in the tank. Fold all the line around in the tank and submerge the small end until the bubbles stop . Hold your finger ☝️over the small end and drop the small end of the tube over the outside of the tank into a bucket or your cooler it will cause a vacuum and drain.... no suckin on the hose

  • @niceguy2171
    @niceguy2171 Před 5 lety +11

Nice new fancy intro, and you don't have to suck siphon to start that, just put your finger over the end of it and fill the big end w/water, release the air w/your finger, and drown the big end again, then put the hose down and it will go..even w/some air still in the hose. Also do some freshwater tanks here, have a couple bass and some sunfish, which I release every spring, then catch new ones in the fall.

  • @TheodoreSchnell
    @TheodoreSchnell Před 5 lety +6

When I was a kid, I started with tropical fish -- I did well with Jack Dempseys, several varieties of "barking" catfish, and African butterfly fish (also known as freshwater flying fish) and had a ball.
By the time I was in high school, I was much more interested in local wildlife, including pond life. So I set up a 20-gallon tank with natural plants, freshwater shrimp, and a variety of tadpoles representing bullfrogs, leopard frogs, salamanders and toads -- all gathered from some ponds near my parents' home.
Unfortunately, one of the plants I had chosen is called bladderwort, which has small air bladders that allow it to float on the surface. But, within a matter of days, the tadpoles began disappearing, and the bladderwort started to sink and its small air bladders turned black.
It turns out that the bladders on the plant actually are small traps that, when triggered, suck in aquatic life. The plant actually had been "eating" the tadpoles.
I removed the bladderwort and the remaining tadpoles matured. I released them, and then added a few bluegills to the aquarium. I eventually released those back into the wild as well, and finally abandoned the hobby when I went to college.
It was an enjoyable and educational hobby, and I highly recommend it -- my interests turned more toward fishing and photography, and later writing, so I never returned to the aquarium activities, but my memories of the hobby are good.
Thanks for posting the video -- it brought back some of my own treasured memories!
    You both ROCK!!

You don't have to "suck" those drain hoses. Place the outflow where you want it to drain, put the big end into the water allow it to fill, them point the open end up and lift it up, water will rush quickly through the siphone so you need to get it submerged again quickly, the siphon will keep the water flow going.

Take the tank outside and thoroughly clean rocks and sides .put old water back in the tank and use dechlorinate in water , wait for the tank to settle .Then put fish back in tank .Do not put predators fish of the bluegills and crappie in the tank .aka Bass .

One more -- this video reminded me of something else. The Fox River , which runs through my hometown of Elgin, Illinois, was a polluted, virtually dead mess in the 1960s. But environmental efforts, both locally and nationally (Clean Water Act) worked a virtual transformation of this waterway. By the mid- to late 1970s, a friend of my Dad's had set up several freshwater aquariums to showcase some of the fishing making a comeback in the river. He had crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, a walleye, and I think a small pike or muskie as well.
He was an early environmentalist, I guess, and he used the aquariums to demonstrate to local and county officials, as well as members of the public, that the fight to save the Fox River was working -- because he had caught all of the fish in his aquariums from the river.
I think some speculated he might get into trouble for keeping the game fish, but his project was pretty cool AND demonstrated that local environmental efforts were paying off.
I'll stop posting comments on this video now -- but you really, really brought back some great memories for me. Thanks, as always!

Cole, just fill the big end with water by submerging the whole tube under the water then turn the open end up toward the ceiling while raising the tube above the water line. The water will begin flowing through the tube then immediately submerge the big end into the tank (with the open end stilll up) all the air will leave the big end and water will continue to siphon! No mouth needed! If you don’t understand, let me know and I’ll make a video to show you how to do it! Big-D

Nice aquarium. I have an aquarium with bluegills too. I would get a small catfish to keep the bottom clean, plus they are cute. One non-native fish I recommend getting is an algae eater, like the Chinese Algae Eater. It’ll keep the tank clean of algae so between the catfish and algae eater, you won’t need to clean the tank hardly at all as you can maintain a good healthy environment.

I set up a freshwater tank for my aunt and put a catfish, two small bream and two tiny snapping turtles in it I`d go see her twice a week and bring the fish and turtles worms. She fed them fish flakes too. The turtles would go crazy when they saw me and I`d let them out of the tank for a little while. They`d swim to the top so I could get them. They were very friendly. I eventually let the turtles go back in a stream the next Spring.

Next time you change the water in your fish tank use the same garden hose. Put the hose into the tank just like when you were filling it, turn on hose for a few seconds then disconnect the hose from the spigot and it will cause a siphon. No more humping buckets and coolers full of water out the front door. Also rubber band or zip tie some screening around the tip of the hose in the tank so it cant suck up the rocks. Bass are a lot of fun by the way to keep and hand feed nightcrawlers to. They use to love to go after my wifes brightly painted finger nails too! Have fun! Love your show!

so basically they are abusing animals even if they are fish they still deserve to be treated humanely
PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING FISH CAN"T BE KEPT FOR FOOD I BELIEVE THEY CAN BE BECAUSE THAT SERVES A PURPOSE
ABUSING ANIMALS FOR A VIDEO SERVES NO PURPOSE

Can get a small water lilly plant piece with some roots on, clean it carefully, you will see the pretty colour of the stem in the tank's lighting!
Plant it in one corner and the roots will spread under the gravel; the stem/s will grow up to top of water and small leaves will form.
Mine had small leaves according to tank size! The wild plant had larger leaves! Flower/s may form according to light! Trim plant when overgrows!
When I had too many small snails in tank, I crushed them between fingers underwater for extra fish food!

If you will put the whole thing in the tank and let it fill full of water in the lines and put your thumb over the end and pull the tube out and Lowe’s your hand into your bucket. It will siphon it’s self. I learned that years ago after I got tired of getting a mouth full of fish poo. Lol. And please take the light off before you start scrubbing. I caught 7-10 of these around 15 years ago. I first put one in with a large Oscar to see what would happen standing by of course and the Oscar wanted out of the tank instantly so I took the bluegill out. The bluegill was probably a 3rd of the size of the Oscar. Most Oscars are not super aggressive though. Anyway I had them in their own tank for a few days but ended up letting them go back where I caught them. I fed them in the few days I had them minnows and they would grab them and rip them apart. All the other fish I had including a jaguar cichlid, red devil...very aggressive fish, they would just suck them up and chomp them but the bluegills were different and their movement was very beautiful to watch. They would just dart from one spot to another, very quick. I had a couple males though that had all the other ones in the corner while they just swam freely. Maybe you guys experience was longer lasting than mine

Oh yea, and my friend also put some aquatic fresh water (floating grass) it lived and grew fast.the minnows usually tried to hide up top in it when the bass caught them up top during a feeding frenzy!

Acclimate in a bag in the tank so they don’t get shocked. That temperature differential is why they went nuts when they hit the water

To make your clean up easier.... use your scruber sponge in corners along silicone seals and use razor blade on all your open glass while water is in tank. Clean your plants while still wet... the algae growth comes off better when wet than when dry. Not sure if youve ever had a tank cease on you because of condensation traped between the bottom tank glass and the surface you set the tank on.... my suggestion... put a lair of 2" styrofoam under the tank which extends about 2" outside of tank trim all the way around the tank. Or use store bought wood tank stands which are usually open surface instead of solid suface cabinets. Hope this helps.

Hi, question i was going to set up a tank like yours for the summer and return them in the fall but i read that fish kept in captivity could not be returned to the wild. They would not survive in the wild so i abandoned my tank idea. I was wondering what your thoughts are becuse you said you released your prior fish.

You should also use “stress coat” it aids in healing any injuries on the fish and also neutralizes chlorine in the water.

Fun to do BUT watch the state F&G rules as to collecting & moving live fish. Usually
    permits required.
Try a few Hornpout to keep the bottom clean. If you collect them at a few inches they
will stunt & not grow to 12 or 24 inches ! Besides cat fish are cool.....
    LFOD !

I know it would require some training, but I would like to see native aquariums in schools everywhere. The kids would be made aware of the environment around them and they could learn to change water and test it.
Not only that it would hopefully help the children get excited about nets, pails and the outdoors.

If you feel the large part of the tube up with water and hold it higher than the small end of hose it will create a vacuum. Once it starts just submerge the large end in the tank and presto!

i am trying to tell these ppl to do research and they don't even know about bacteria or stuff i want to do a native tank but it's stuff like this that makes me not want to plus its illegal in my state to possess bluegill or bass for anything other than food
tho you can keep minnows i think
so these ppl need to do more research and i completely agree with you

The tank U put the crayfish in has fish in there way to big for that size tank! Each fish should have about a gallon per inch they are so if u have two fish that are 3 inches you need a minimum of 6 gallons of water. At the bare minimum. And that’s still not giving them enough space to thrive. So with fish that get as big as the ones u had u need a large tank
