Charlie Smith Unlike BOOTLICKER here I agree with everything mr. said about GB's interpretation of this song. And I expressed this in a comment on the original video as soon as it came out. And I was answered by GB himself. However, unfortunately his and the fanboys' response was in self-defense. What makes me sad. Since accepting constructive criticism is a virtue. And unfortunately many lack virtue. Especially in Brazilians who are very emotional and rarely rational. And I say this of myself, because I'm Brazilian. The GB is indeed incredible. I've been following him for years. I know your potential. And I see the reactions to it pretty much every week. I like to see the gringos being surprised by the incredible talent he has. And I know how to recognize his limitations too. When I identify them, I try to comment with constructive criticism. And I hope that in some way when reading them he will reflect on. To improve even more. I believe that despite all the talent he needs to develop important areas for the musical entertainment market. Basically invest more in the performing arts. And those small but important pacing details that you brilliantly cast. Congratulations on his reaction! Hug!
Thank you so much for your comment Sandro. It's funny isn't it. It's the same people who were asking me on previous reactions why he isn't bigger globally but they can't take the answers to the questions they ask. I find that insane.
Anyway, I agree with your whole comment and thank you for taking the time to write it. GH isn't the only one with blindly infatuated fans. I react to so many artist from around the world who have this kind of fanaticism and you just can't tell them anything. I'd be embarrassed to worship anyone like that 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
@@TheCharlieSmithChannel I myself am a singer and I have been watching GH for a while and I am a massive fan of his, but in all honesty I agree with you entirely. The beginning was killer 🔥it had me drooling at the mouth for more, but like I observed as well, his pacing was off in this one. I contribute it partly to his diction as well. He is definitely getting better and maybe that's what he's doing with these more recent songs, trying to improve his diction, variety of song, pacing, etc. I'm trying to look on the bright side and give Constructive criticism like you too. That's just what I noticed. I want to see him go far like Dimash. Because we need more men in the industry with this type of talent, because everything is becoming so...well, I won't go there lol. That's another topic for another day.
I’m a singer, I think Gabriel is letting all singers know that he is one of very few who can sing quickly and do his runs immediately and runs during his whistle notes and more, he is a teaching machine right now, we can really learn something from his musical genius, not taking anything away from your critiques but that is my take on this one song👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I had no expectation as I've never heard the jessie J version. I was just commenting on what I heard as a vocalist and musician. Every musician I have shown it too has also struggled with it too. Thanks for this. Completely different side of him. I had a hard time sitting down! I found no faults but nothing but pleasure. I watch you sometimes but never knew you sang. It must be nice for you to always sing in the pocket, as you say, especially I'm sure when you sing in a language that you don't even speak as Gabriel does, not speaking English. I find that amazing your having that gift. And I've heard what you call yourself singing and you should stay producing for a singer you're not.

And to the guy who agreed with you, and implied Gabriel’s sensitivity on the subject when this person talked to him about what he thought, I would say this: I have performed live in both drama and singing since I was a young teenager, and I had ‘critiques’ from, what we in the US call ‘the Peanut gallery’, and most of the time, I found them frustrating and not helpful. In more than one situation, the critiques were made by someone who had no relationship with me, had no idea what my life was like, did NOT know the playwright (I did. He was my father.) and just blundered his way through like a bull in a china shop. He had no background in theater or music but felt entitled to give his opinion anyway. I wonder if either one of you would have the nerve to say critiques to Beyoncé or Dimash? Do you think they’d appreciate your “constructive criticism”? Would you refer to them as having an attitude about your comments, if they didn’t respond well? The best humans don’t take critiques well. It’s doubly hard when the one critiquing is only an armchair performer, as opposed to a professional in the same craft as the one being taken down a peg. They often think they’re being helpful, but mostly they’re being UNhelpful and showing their lack of understanding of the very craft they’re critiquing! Just a thought…

Gabriel Henrique is not singing this song on a stage with an audience, it's a cover in a fixed location as if it were a studio, this issue of gestures and facial expressions is not necessary, the important thing is his incredible vocal talent that few men can reach the notes that he reaches.
It's a video which he has posted to CZcams where he has hundreds of thousands of viewers. It's nothing like a studio and is definitely much more like a live performance. This makes no sense

When a singer is in an environment alone my analysis is just the voice. It's easier to connect to the feeling of the song when you're on stage. It's annoying to want the singer to be expressing the lyrics of the song all the time. I agree that if Gabriel makes his own tracks, whether on piano or guitar, his performance will be even better. He used the track played live for Jessie J at the performance in China.
Not true. Doesn't matter if you are on an actual stage or behind a camera. You are still performing for an audience. Only if the camera AND people are not there does it become a recording rather than a performance. If people are watching you with their eyes then it's a performance.

@@TheCharlieSmithChannel The biggest problem you're doing analysis is thinking about how you would do it. Each person expresses themselves in a different way. Currently the industry is producing more singers focused on dance performance and facial expressions than vocal talent. The singer has to know how to sing first and then take courses in other areas such as expressions and dance.

I'm simply talking about performing the song to the audience. This wasn't a performance. It was rigid and awkward. I never once ignored how talented he is vocally and said it many times. The fact is that he has some things to work on if he wants to successfully sing a song like this and that's why I said it. You don't need to defend him so hard. I know he can sing. He's not perfect though and it seems a lot of people are having a hard time hearing that. He can be good at one thing and not so good at another at the same time. They're not mutually exclusive

I think when you state that this performance proofs that a singer is not made to sing every kind of song, you're indirectly or directly saying that Gabriel shouldn't try this kind of song (it,s not his bag, you said). Gabriel Herinque é fantástico, e nessa canção, muito difícil por sinal, ele está mais perfomático que o de costume, eu apreciei essa postura, mas, entendi o seu ponto de vista sobre essa apresentação em específico. Acredito que é mais difícil relaxar e cantar mais solto, quando não se tem a fluência da língua em questão, pois o cérebro fica em constante movimento entre tradução literal e a fala, involuntariamente, engessando mais as expressões. Quando se é fluente na língua, canções com mais frases ou frases complexas saem mais relaxadas. O GH está aperfeiçoando o seu inglês a cada dia, mostrando que é muito dedicado e preza pela qualidade do trabalho que apresenta, logo estará fluente, aí o que já é incrível vai virar surreal, como já é quando ele canta em português. ✌👍
Gabriel Herinque is fantastic, and in this song, very difficult by the way, he is more performant than usual, I appreciated this posture, but I understood your point of view on this specific performance. I believe that it's more difficult to relax and sing more freely, when you don't have the fluency of the language in question, because the brain is in constant movement between literal translation and speech, involuntarily, putting more plaster on the expressions. When you are fluent in the language, songs with more phrases or complex phrases come out more relaxed. GH is improving his English every day, showing that he is very dedicated and values the quality of the work he presents, soon he will be fluent, then what is already incredible will become surreal, as it already is when he sings in Portuguese. ✌👍

I wonder if this comes from English not being his first language. Could it be that Gabriel is not pronouncing the words in the basic speech pattern that you or I would use when speaking English? My sincere opinion about the fact that he seems serious while singing is that he is a member of the evangelical church. The evangelical culture in Brazil has a stance of not allowing gospel singers to sing any other type of music besides gospel. Dancing to non-gospel music seems a bit too much for his family-oriented culture. Additionally, I believe he is gay, but he cannot show it at all. He puts in a lot of effort to learn how to sing in English, without knowing the language because in Brazil, only 5% of the population can speak English. I think there are already many barriers that he needs to break and have the freedom to be who he is.

Hi Charlie, it’s the “Bad Penny” again - Christina here. Well, of course I disagree. I certainly understand your critique - he isn’t always in the pocket, and he does rush the beat - IN PLACES - but there are some wonderful things he does in this song where he is definitely in the groove…I LOVE that “Oh, oh, oh” section. That was classy and sexy at the same time. I think, once again, you need to give him a break. Maybe yourself too. In my opinion, it’s utter nonsense for a person of his caliber of talent, to just ‘give up’ like you’re suggesting. “Maybe he should just stick to ballads, which he does beautifully…” then you added that you wouldn’t do the song because it’s not your ‘style’. True masters of their craft, which I believe Gabriel is, would never stay in their comfort zone. They would always be taking risks, honing their already amazing skills to attain a level of artistry that would set them apart from the crowd. THAT’S who Gabriel is. He never plays it safe. The moment a person decides to stay in their ‘safe’ place, like the shallow end of a pool, that’s when they start regressing into the ordinary. I don’t know about you, but Gabriel would NEVER settle for safe, shallow, or ordinary! He should, instead, do MORE up tempo songs so he can improve both his groove and his English! I also don’t believe he riffs to cover his own flaws, which you implied. He hears riffs in his head and unlike most of us who can’t turn them into reality, Gabriel can. I think it’s admirable what he accomplished in this song, and I hope he keeps pushing the edge. How else can a person of his level of talent grow?

Hey Charlie! Don't be impressed by rude comments from some people here... This has much more to do with the moment of polarization that we are experiencing in the world, and especially here in Brazil, which has led people to react to any sign that be interpreted as rejection, causing them to react negatively without thinking about those feelings (which are theirs, not yours). For these people, only matters praise, approval, and full buy-in. As I said... the problem is not in your criticism, but in their distorted sensitivity.
On these occasions, what comes after the "but" can make a big difference.

Hey Charlie. I agree with you! I love Gabriel and I think he is one of the best singers currently, and I think he might be the best when it comes to range and emotions all together. However, it was not his best perfomance because of the tempo and his ability to speak English in a fast way. That might have affected a little.
However, that aside, I enjoyed the video because it showed a different fun side of GH and maybe, if he keeps practicing this kind of song he will improve over time! I would love to see him doing this kind of song more often!

A very poorly analysis. No one can tell other what they should do or sing. Imagine someone telling to MJ only sing ballads.
Gabriel is leaving his comfort zone and start to enjoy this new thing, your critics only put him down and “demand” him to go back. SMH!

I agree with your comments and I think Gabriel is very good and captivating, but you don't always get everything right all the time, I myself like to receive criticism on the work I deliver. Gabriel's brother said they watch the reaction videos; this indicates that they also like to hear the criticism, I bet Gabriel likes it, because he likes the challenge, to improve himself. Hearing only praise is not enough, right? There is always something to improve.

Refreshing to see an honest reaction. I agree. He is a good technical singer but that alone does not do it for me. His timing is off, he is too focused as if he is counting steps while dancing and he adds pretty notes without any musical purpose. His tone is also quite standard tbh.
