    So, I've been following and finding a lot of Derren Brown lately, and I knew he was mindblowing at memory tricks and persuasion and all the like. However I had no idea he was so fantastic at card tricks like this, this version of oil and water blows away even the master rene levands version. Simply...well...mindblowing.

    I am a magician and I can assure you the spectators were completely amazed. They had had really no idea what was happening. If you were there it would be the same for you.
    And it's easy to comment like that when you are watching a video which you can view over and over again.

  • @scpeer
    @scpeer Před 15 lety

    I'm always amazed that:
    1. Viewers resort to "that's just a trick"
    2. Viewers would rather learn a secret to something they'll never master over the thrill of amazement, and
    3. That the secrects proposed are always more complex and silly than the actual solution

    At 2:26 you can see a card in Derren's right hand that he has pulled out of his sleeve. The card is visible right after his hand comes down from "moistening his finger."

  • @Umogrim
    @Umogrim Před 15 lety

    Come on, I can't be the only one that saw what he did. He didn't mix or unmix them, they were always the same cards, he simply moved them so fast(and turned them face down) so they were convinced by his words. It may not be amazing magic, but it's excellent showmanship, which is what he is, not a magician.

    it is called oil and water because when you mix oil and water they separate the oil floats at the top so the blacks represent oil and the reds represent water

    I can. It's actually quite brilliant, how the ending is done. The rest is standard.

  • @amattrials
    @amattrials Před 16 lety

    The cards never actually unmix themselves. Notice how he only shows one card at a time as he reveals them and then puts them face down. He is using sleight of hand to show the same card 4 times to make them believe that all the red cards are there and puts the others down on the table face down. The opposite applies when he reveals the other hand. It's a very good and very convincing trick though and extremely well performed by Derren.

  • @ISteppedOnATurd
    @ISteppedOnATurd Před 15 lety

    I haven't watch the video in a while but what he does though is simply alternate bottom dealing when he reveals the cards, to make it appear that there are four reds, when really there are only two. He hides the black cards by flipping over reds from the bottom and then putting down black cards. Again, I'm not saying it's easy to perform, as it does require some slights, but it's not a "complicated" trick to understand. If you just watch the cards closely it's pretty easy to follow.

  • @robertweekes5783
    @robertweekes5783 Před 15 lety

    @ ISteppedOnATurd - if you pause it at 1:33 you see a 7 of diamonds, at 1:34 you see a 6 of hearts, and at 1:35 you see a 9 of hearts. obviously you didn't watch the trick as closely as you thought.

    We never get to really see the "all red" hand and the "all black" hand. In fact, pause on 1:34 and you will see a BLACK card in the red deck - which is never actually shown because he puts the cards face down. Now why would he do that? One of Derren's earlier videos so we can forgive him for that :) Still reckon he is brilliant!

    Let's just put some rumours to rest....
    In this trick there are no camera tricks, no cards hidden up sleeves, no short cards and it is done with an ordinary standard deck. Derren also gives credit to Sadowitz for this trick, and does state this is just his own version, but dislikes performing this trick.
    I know how this trick is done, but I'm not going to blab it to the whole world on You Tube, however with a little imagination you can find out the full method for this effect.

    @countsmyth 0:34 is first deception. they are not aligned properly. one black and one red has been put over eachother sort of. when he gathers them together they switch places.. he does plenty of these "off-beat" sleights. Saying something with a loud and clear voice, leaning forward and spreading the cards out, then as he reclines and speaks in a softer tone they look him in the eyes and miss the sleights.

  • @classic240
    @classic240 Před 16 lety

    actually thats only half correct. density only affects which substance will be on the top and which will be on the bottom.
    oil and water separate because oil is a nonpolar substance and water is a polar substance. without an emulsifying agent (such as soap) oil is immiscible in water.
    good try though.

    The only reason this trick seems so amazing is because of the bad video quality makes it hard to see the cards. If anyone was actually really there, they could tell right away what he was doing. The people he's performing too are either complete idiots who aren't paying attention at all or actors; that's all there is to it.

  • @ISteppedOnATurd
    @ISteppedOnATurd Před 15 lety

    Why? Because I think that you should notice when someone shows you the same card four times insisting that it's four different cards? Don't get me wrong, I like Derren Brown, but this is a ridiculously simple trick and not hard to figure out at all. I take back the actors thing, they're probably not actors, just really unobservant people. I'm sure anyone who was really watching closely would have seen right away what he was doing.

  • @ISteppedOnATurd
    @ISteppedOnATurd Před 15 lety

    Or, maybe I do know how the trick is done and I was simply exaggerating. You're right though, you clever dog you, he doesn't show them the same card four times, but he doesn't show them three either. He has two reds and two blacks and simply alternates dealing off the bottom and on top to make his TWO red cards look like four. And look at their faces! They're barely even paying attention anyway! I'm not saying the trick is poorly performed, merely that it's way too simple and easy to figure out.
