Three Dog Night is a great rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. They had great songs such as "One" (written by Harry Nilsson), "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Eli's Coming", "Shambala", "Joy To The World", "Liar", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Never Been To Spain", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On" etc.

Yes, and drummer Floyd Sneed is criminally underrated. As a drummer myself, it pains me to see a guy like Charlie Watts getting more props than Sneed. (Of course, Neil Peart, Ringo Starr, John Bonham, Bill Ward, Danny Seraphine and the rest are great, but so are Floyd Sneed, Phil Ehart, Steve Upton, Garry Peterson, etc.) Great video, Jamel.

Back in the early days of CDs record companies were scrambling to release older stock on the new tech. Doing "greatest hits" CDs was an easy, cheap and profitable way to use up back catalog. The problem was that most artists didn't have enough hits to fill up the 20 songs the CDs could handle. As a result, a lot of the CDs had to use inferior songs to fill them up. However, the TDN CD was filled with Top 40 hits from beginning to end. Every single one of the songs on the CD was a monster. Still one of the best values in music.

Cory Wells was the lead singer here and this song was written by Randy Newman originally for Eric Burdon.
    A little history here:
In 67/68 there was a club called the 5th Estate in Scottsdale Arizona and us high school kids would go there because they had a fantastic house band called The Mile Ends that became well known as the opening acts for The Turtles, the Music Machine, and the Doors. While there we often saw The Cory Wells Blues Band perform before he became part of Three Dog Night.
Around the same time, there was a club about a block away called JD's who had as their main house artist some guy named Waylon Jennings. What time to be alive.

Now just think, all the little kids like me, not quite teenagers hearing this song! LOL And trust me when I say that even in that tiny town there were parties you ended up at with your older brothers (or sisters) where you felt just like the guy in this song. LOL What a time. It's a wonder any of us survived. Whenever people say they wonder what is going to happen to the world with today's kids, I think back to those times and laugh. We survived and became responsible citizens. Everything will be fine.

These guys had literally 21 top 40 Billboard hit singles back in the day. There's not many artists who can say that. They were amazing players as well. The thing is that back then the studio versions were not that much better with bands like this. They could all just kill it on their instruments so when they played live it was amazing. And they were playing it live in the studio so it was an easier transition to take it to the stage.

Momma told me not to come.... "That ain't the way to have fun...son". But apparently he went anyway and Momma was right! Yes, Three Dog Night and Grand Funk have similar sounds...at times. Great reaction!! 👍

Joy to the World by them is a must. At the time, everyone within hearing distance would stop to sing along to that first line. :)

Changed the words of the last verse though . On the studio version it's :" I've seen so many things I ain't never seen before , but the trouble with me is , I don't wanna see no more !" If you haven't done "Joy To The World" by Three Dog Night , I know you'll love that one too , Jamel . Interesting fact - The band's name is derived from a saying of Australian sheep herders , that would camp out with the flock . For warmth on cold nights , they would sleep next to a sheep dog , but , when it was particularly frigid , they would exclaim , "This is a three dog night !"

Three Dog Night was cool. They were in that category of popular circa 1970 rock bands that had a similar, lounge-lizard hipness vibe going on - groups like The Lovin' Spoonful, Jim Croce, Blood Sweat and Tears, Grand Funk, The Guess Who and some of that early 70's Chicago all had a similar feel to it. Pop radio friendly stuff - yet fairly hip; I remember hearing stuff like this on the school bus radio all the time. "Joy to the World" was one we used to sing in first grade music class; I think kids still do in a lot of schools.

I love watching you diggin' the music we were so lucky to have when we were growing up. Three Dog Night was the first live concert I ever went to, in Pocatello, Idaho at the Mini Dome. We ate purple microdot and had a hell of a night.

TDN. Has become a tribute band. Only one original member, Danny Hutton, is still performing. Chuck Negron performs with his own band, but you gotta remember these guys are 80, now. Cory Wells, the soulful singer died a number of years ago. The original bass player and keyboard player have also passed away

Hey brother, great video! Interesting fact about their name: In cold Arctic regions the dog sled drivers would often sleep at night up against a sled dog for warmth. A Very Cold Night was called a 3 Dog Night. They are a fun group for sure. Thank you
